1st

Blessed are Those Who Keep His Commandments

Optional Scripture Reading-- 1 John 4: 7-21

 

Space will only permit the quoting of three verses on this subject. Matthew 22:36-38 Master, which is the great commandment ....37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 38 This is the first and great commandment.

Notice, they called Him "Master." This title was in recognition that they knew He had authority and would tell them the truth. This conversation took place shortly before Jesus was going to die on the cross. These men were only human and they were in need of teaching. If a person really loves God as they should, they will give Him glory in all things. They will love Him in spite of their circumstances. The above love is total commitment love.


John 15:12
This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you. This commandment identifies whether we are truly the children of Light and whether we have really been saved. If there is no love in your heart for fellow Christians, in spite of what they have done to, or against you, you do not have the true love of God in your heart! If you're not able to forgive and forget, then you have never truly learned the leading of the Holy Spirit.


Ephesians 6:2 Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;) This commandment is to children. In our day, there is no respect for parents, teacher, the law, or anything else. If there is no respect for parents, how can there be any respect for God? He is our heavenly Father and should be respected above all. If we cannot keep the first commandment it is a sure thing we will not not keep the rest of them.

1 John 4:7-21. Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.
[8] He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.
[9] In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.
[10] Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
[11] Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.
[12] No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us.
[13] Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit.
[14] And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world.
[15] Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God.
[16] And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.
[17] Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world.
[18] There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.
[19] We love him, because he first loved us.
[20] If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?
[21] And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also.

Blessing of Children

Optional Scripture Reading" Psalm 127

The term "blessed" means "to be or declare happy . "(Concordance). Children ought to be a blessing to the parents and also to grand parents,that is, they ought to do whatever they can to make them happy. How they speak how they act, how they respond to parents is very important.


It says of the virtuous woman in Proverbs 31:28 Her children rise up and call her blessed. "The reward of the ideal woman, revolves about two entities, her children a her husband. First, she gains the respect of her children which is demonstrated by the fact that they 'rise up,' indication of respect and honor. To stand up in a person's presence denotes respect in Old Testament etiquette. Her children also bring her subjective blessing in that they 'bless' her which means, literally, 'make her happy. Second, she receives the praise of her husband which also involves respect" (Portraits in Proverbs, Chester McCalley)


The Psalmist points out that children are to be blessing to the parents. Lo, children are an heritage of LORD; and the fruit of the womb is his reward. As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are child of the youth. Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate. Psalm 127:3-5. The writer of Proverbs says: Children's children are the crown of men; and the glory of the children are their fathers. Proverbs 17:6.


The child that will bring blessing to the parents will be one who will accept correction and the correction will administered out of love. For whom the Lord loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom delighteth. Proverbs 3:12

Blessed Are The Peacemakers

Optional Scripture Reading: Romans 10:12-21

I think it was Ghandi who said if everyone practiced and eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth, it would not be long before the whole world was blind and toothless. And while this statement misses the point of perfect justice that was being taught by God, there is an element of truth here.


Justice and righteousness are great things. And yet we need to be very careful with these. It is possible to think that we are standing for truth and righteousness, when we are just full of self and unwilling to do all we can in order to live in peace with others.
One would have to be blind to not realize that God hates all unnecessary strife. In Romans 12:18 we are told very specifically. If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men. In other words, if we can compromise without sin, we need to do it.


Many a home, many a church, and many a community would be a much happier place, if people could do this. And yet people in sin are so full of self that this is often the exception and not the rule. Our Lord described His generation as like spoiled children who had to have their own way. As I talk to preachers, I often find the same true today more often than not.


We read in Proverbs 6:16 These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are all abomination unto Him: As we read through the list we find that in Proverbs 6:19 ..... he that soweth discord among brethren, is mentioned.


Jesus talked about turning the other cheek and walking the second mile. God help us as His people to manifest this spirit of peace.

Romans 10:12-21. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.
[13] For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
[14] How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?
[15] And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!
[16] But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?
[17] So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
[18] But I say, Have they not heard? Yes verily, their sound went into all the earth, and their words unto the ends of the world.
[19] But I say, Did not Israel know? First Moses saith, I will provoke you to jealousy by them that are no people, and by a foolish nation I will anger you.
[20] But Esaias is very bold, and saith, I was found of them that sought me not; I was made manifest unto them that asked not after me.
[21] But to Israel he saith, All day long I have stretched forth my hands unto a disobedient and gainsaying people.

The Blessing of Strength in God

Optional Scripture Reading: Isaiah 40

It could be that when we mention strength in God our first thoughts go to a man of incredible strength, Samson. Samson killed hundreds of Philistines all because the Spirit of the Lord was upon him. But, without the Spirit of God Samson was an ordinary man.


In I Samuel 17 we find a story of a young man that was willing to take the challenge no one else was willing to take. David realized that the battle was the Lord's. He knew that he could not defeat Goliath in his own power, and that there was no one more powerful than God. David's strength rested in God and because of this God gave him the victory.
The Bible tells us in Philippians 4:13 that I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.
When we decide to place our strength in Christ we will have the joy of seeing many blessings that only God can do. Too often we try to do things in our own stength and we fail. We forget John 15:5, without me (Christ) ye can do nothing.


Many times things happen that seem to discourage us in the "Christian race of life". It seems as if we do not have the spiritual strength to overcome temptation, nor the strength to get back up when we fall. The thing that we must all remember is that strength is found in God and not in ourselves. Take some time to consider Isaiah 40:31, But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary, and they shall walk, and not faint.

Psalm 84:5 Blessed is the man whose strength is in thee; in whose heart are the ways of them.

[1] Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God.
[2] Speak ye comfortably to Jerusalem, and cry unto her, that her warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity is pardoned: for she hath received of the LORD's hand double for all her sins.
[3] The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God.
[4] Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low: and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain:
[5] And the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.
[6] The voice said, Cry. And he said, What shall I cry? All flesh is grass, and all the goodliness thereof is as the flower of the field:

Blessed are Those Who Know Jesus as Savior

Optional Scripture Reading: Philippians 1:1-10

 

Paul begins this little book of Philippians with an announcement Phil.l:6 Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ: And eight times in these four chapters Paul uses the word "know." To be confident is to know something. If you really know a fact you are confident.


Lets look at several of these verses where know is used:

  • Phil. 1:19 For I know that this shall turn to my salvation through your prayer, and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ
  • Phil. 1:25 And having this confidence, I know that I shall abide and continue with you all for your furtherance and joy of faith.
  • Phil. 2:19 But I trust in the Lord Jesus to send Timotheus shortly unto you, that I also may be of good comfort, when I know your state.
  • Phil. 2:22 But ye know the proof of him, that, as a son with the father, he hath served with me in the gospel.
  • Philippians 3:10 That I may know Him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;


The above five verses all express a positive knowledge f faith and victory. They also express the desire to know. The Philippians were following Paul's teaching and the Lord. What a joy it is to this retired Pastor to receive letters from people he had ministered to in the past and know they are standing firm in the faith.

And lastly, Paul expresses his own personal faith and happiness. His personal knowledge of the resurrection and the process of being conformed to the image of Christ. This is real joy and happinesss!

Delight in the Lord

Optional Scripture Reading: Psalm 40:1-17

 

To "delight" in something or someone means "to desire, have pleasure in." (Concordance). Or "A high degree of pleasure, afford high satisfaction or joy; to have or take pleasure in" something or someone. (Webster-I828)

In considering tlus subject we need to ask ourselves the question "in what or in whom do we find the most pleasure or joy? In material things, in personal satisfaction of some accomplishment, or in God and that which pertains to Him?" The Psalmist points out the importance of our relationship to the Lord. We are encouraged to Trust in the Lord; delight thyself in the Lord; commit thy way unto the Lord; rest in the Lord; wait upon the Lord. Psalm 37:1-9. And when we do, there are wonderful benefits. Such a one will dwell in the land and be fed; have the desires of thine heart; He will bring it to pass (direct our way), and inherit the earth. If our delight is in God we will delight to do the will of God. Psalm 40:8. If we delight in the Lord then we will also delight in His Word. We will find pleasure in the law of the Lord, His testimonies, His commandments. Ps. 1 :2;119:24; 119:143; 119:174.


As the Psalmist looks within himself "he buries himself in the pure delights of communion with the Lord.
It is not in himself that he finds satisfaction, but in the ever present Object, The Lord." (W.G. Scroggie) What should be the desire of the heart of the child of God? "It is this, to know, and to love, and to live to God, to please Him, and be pleased in Him." (Matthew Henry)

How much joy or pleasure do we get out of reading God's Word and having fellowship with Him? Do we delight in God?

Thought: "Happiness depends on happenings, but joy depends on Jesus." (Daily Bread, 1978)

Blessed are They That Mourn

Optional Scripture Reading: Hebrews 4:11-16

 

 

In Matthew 5:4 we read, Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. God is a special helper to those in need. In the old Testament, we read about His special care for the widow and the fatherless. Fallen humanity in its cruelty and corruption tends to despise weakness. Our God, though infinite in all of His perfections does not.


In James 5:4 we read of those who are rich and powerful. They are warned by God. In this text we read, Behold, the hire of the labourers who have reaped down your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, crieth: and the cries of them which have reaped are entered into the ears of the Lord of sabaoth. Those who are sick and in trouble are often the targets of the wicked. And yet the wicked would be wise to remember that the weak and vulnerable have a special helper in God.


So it is our Lord could say that people like this are blessed. I have often said that behind ever negative thing in life is an advantage, if we will only find it and make use of it. And here we see where Jesus tells us he same thing from a spiritual standpoint. Are you in great sorrow about some difficulty in your life today? Take heart friend. God will take it and use it in your life for good if you will only let Him.


If loss and destruction be our lot, we must be the authors of it ourselves. For it is God's purpose, that hose who put their trust in Him find victory in all the trials of life. We read in Romans 8:37 that .... in all ... things we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us.

Hebrews 4:11-16. Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.
[12] For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
[13] Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.
[14] Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.
[15] For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.
[16] Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

Blessed are the Forgiven

Optional Scripture Reading: Psalm 32

 

Sin robs Christians of the joy that they have in Christ. Most of us know that David committed the sin of adultery with Bathsheba. Once this happened, David lost the joy of his salvation (notice he lost the joy of his salvation but not salvation itself). In Psalm 51, David asked that his joy of salvation be restored. When we choose to sin we too lose the joy and peace that God offers. The Bible tells us in Hebrews 11:25 that there is pleasure or fun in sin only for a season, but for the true believer there is no joy. Joy only comes to those who walk in the Spirit. (Galatians 5).

Earlier in Psalm 51:2, David asked God to wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse m.e from my sin. Here David is seeking God's Forgiveness. First John 1:9, tells us that If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our Sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. So as we, like David, seek God's forgiveness He promises to forgive our sins. What wonderful joy and happiness to know that our sins have been forgiven. In Psalm 32:1-2 David said Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered 2 Blessed is the man unto whom the LORD imputeth not iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no guile.

Is there sin in your life that is robbing you of your joy? If so confess that sin to God so that He may restore the joy of your salvation and give you the blessing of forgiveness.

[1] Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.
[2] Blessed is the man unto whom the LORD imputeth not iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no guile.
[3] When I kept silence, my bones waxed old through my roaring all the day long.
[4] For day and night thy hand was heavy upon me: my moisture is turned into the drought of summer. Selah.
[5] I acknowledged my sin unto thee, and mine iniquity have I not hid. I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the LORD; and thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin. Selah.
[6] For this shall every one that is godly pray unto thee in a time when thou mayest be found: surely in the floods of great waters they shall not come nigh unto him.
[7] Thou art my hiding place; thou shalt preserve me from trouble; thou shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance. Selah.
[8] I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.
[9] Be ye not as the horse, or as the mule, which have no understanding: whose mouth must be held in with bit and bridle, lest they come near unto thee.
[10] Many sorrows shall be to the wicked: but he that trusteth in the LORD, mercy shall compass him about.
[11] Be glad in the LORD, and rejoice, ye righteous: and shout for joy, all ye that are upright in heart.

Blessed are Those Who Endure Temptation

Optional Scripture Reading: 2 Timothy 1:10

 

When we are tempted our first inclination is to ask God why we are being tempted, or why me? Remember: the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, (1 John 2:16) are still with us-- and will be-- until we die or are raptured.

We cannot expect to escape these desires to sin because they are part of our old nature. Remember, Christ was tempted by Satan and Satan used these three temptations to tempt Christ.

However, Satan was the one that was defeated (Matt 4: 1-11). The writer of Hebrews records the temptations of the Lord, and we can be comforted that in all His temptations, Christ was victorious. Hebrews 2:18 . And Hebrews 4: 15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.

We receive the perfect key or prescription for overcoming trials in the following verses:

  • James 1:2-4 My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; 3 Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. 4 But let patience (which grows only in trials or endurance) have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing. That you may enjoy victory over sin through the patience and love Christ gives you.

Many years ago a missionary in India asked this question of a gold smith, "How do you know when the gold is pure enough to use in making the beautiful jewelry you make?" He answered, "When the surface is pure enough to see my face without impurities or blemishes." Many of our temptations (trials) are put before us to purify us. When we have gained the victory over the temptation, (trials) we are permitting the Holy Spirit to guide our life, and glorify Christ.

[1] Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.
[2] And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred.

Blessing of Forgiveness

Optional Scripture Reading: Psalm 22:: 1-11

 

David wrote in Psalm 32: 1 Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. The word used here for blessed is the word for "happy, very happy." (Concordance) This verse is quoted by Paul in Romans 4:6-7, Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works, Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered. The word Paul uses is makarios, which means "spiritually prosperous." (Wuest) The individual whose sins or iniquities are forgiven by the Lord is "spiritually prosperous." God puts His righteousness to our accounts not on the basis of good works we have done, but on the basis of our being forgiven.

Forgiveness is more than the remitting of the penalty. Even a hard hearted judge might remit a man's fine if it were paid by someone else, but forgiveness involves the heart of the Forgiver. God's forgiveness is God folding the sinner, as the returning prodigal was folded, to His bosom. Such a one is blessed indeed." (W.B. Newell)

Scripture says much about our forgiveness.

  • And you...hath He quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses. Col. 2: 13.
  • In whom (Christ) we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace. Eph. 1:7.
  • I write unto you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for his name's sake. 1John 2:12.
  • Just as we have been forgiven, we are to be forgiving. Jesus said: Forgive and ye shall be forgiven. Luke 6:37.
  • Paul wrote: And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you. Eph. 4:32.
  • Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man hath a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. Col. 3:13.

And we have this great promise: If we confess our sins, He is faithful will just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9.

Thought: "Whenever a man is ready to uncover his sins, God is always ready to cover them." (Sword Of The Lord)

Blessing of Freedom

Optional Scripture Reading: II Peter 2: 19-22

 

When we think of Liberty or freedom, we can think of it in terms of internal and external liberty. I don't think that those who do not have internal liberty can keep external liberty for long.

I had the opportunity years ago to hear Josh McDowell speak. As he spoke, he made the point that liberty is the power to do what we ought. It is this important moral and spiritual liberty that is the foundation of all liberty. In our text, the apostle Peter is speaking of apostates. These are people who profess to speak on God's authority, but are the ministers of Satan.
In 2 Peter 2:19 we read about their ministry. In this text we read, While they promise them liberty, they themselves are the servants of corruption: for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he brought in bondage.

In other words, if our hearts are overcome by sin and temptation, we are in bondage to sin. It is simply not possible for one who does not know Jesus Christ as savior to be free from the bondage of sin. Jesus said Ye must be born again! This is a Heart belief--not just a Brain belief. Thus these apostates who preach a brain acknowledgment are overcome by corruption and sin. We need to realize that God would have us be holy-- one of His children.

I think one of the most tragic legacies of our generation is a doctrine of faith in God without repentance.One cannot find such teaching in God's word. Such a message may sedate us for a while, but if we would find hope and blessing, we must find the freedom to do as we ought. There are many ministries today that try and offer hope without dealing with the problem of sin. They preach that we can be Friends of God without actually turning from Self to Righteousness through repentant belief.

Unrepentant belief is what Satan and the demons have. James 2:19 Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble. This verse in James offers hope to the unrepentant who acknowledge God's existence that they can do well--they can repent--where the demons no longer have that hope. Without liberty from the bondage of sin, without the New Birth that brings internal liberty there simply is no hope.

II Peter 2: 19-22 While they promise them liberty, they themselves are slaves of corruption; for by whom a person is overcome, by him also he is brought into bondage.
20 For if, after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the latter end is worse for them than the beginning.
21 For it would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than having known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered to them.
22 But it has happened to them according to the true proverb: "A dog returns to his own vomit," and, "a sow, having washed, to her wallowing in the mire."

Blessed are They Who Suffer for Christ

Optional Scripture Reading: 2 Cor 11: 16-33,

 

Matthew 5:11-12 Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.
We may ask ourselves how can there be blessedness or happiness in persecution? But for the true child of God that is seeking to please Him, there is joy in suffering for Christ. The Bible tells us in 2 Timothy 3:12 that Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution. Most of us would agree that the Apostle Paul was a godly man and suffered greatly for it. One of the amazing things about Paul was his attitude toward his suffering.
Consider 2 Corinthian 12:9b-10, Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak then am I strong.

Moses was another man who suffered for God. In Hebrews 11:25 we see that Moses chose rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season. In this verse there is an incredible challenge. If we would be honest with ourselves, how many of us would rather enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season than suffer persecution for Christ? Many people are taking the easy road of pleasure in sin and missing the blessings of suffering for Christ.

2 Corinthians 11: 16-33 I say again, let no one think me a fool. If otherwise, at least receive me as a fool, that I also may boast a little.
17 What I speak, I speak not according to the Lord, but as it were, foolishly, in this confidence of boasting.
18 Seeing that many boast according to the flesh, I also will boast.
19 For you put up with fools gladly, since you yourselves are wise!
20 For you put up with it if one brings you into bondage, if one devours you, if one takes from you, if one exalts himself, if one strikes you on the face.
21 To our shame, I say that we were too weak for that! But in whatever anyone is bold––I speak foolishly––I am bold also.
22 ¶ Are they Hebrews? So am I. Are they Israelites? So am I. Are they the seed of Abraham? So am I.
23 Are they ministers of Christ? ––I speak as a fool––I am more: in labors more abundant, in stripes above measure, in prisons more frequently, in deaths often.
24 From the Jews five times I received forty stripes minus one.
25 Three times I was beaten with rods; once I was stoned; three times I was shipwrecked; a night and a day I have been in the deep;
26 in journeys often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils of my own countrymen, in perils of the Gentiles, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren;

Blessed are Those Who Witness for Christ

Optional Scripture Reading: I Timothy 6: 11-21

 

The Old Testament records soul winning and testifying for the Lord: Daniel 12:3 And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever. The last phrase tells us that those who win souls and turn many to righteousness shall shine as the stars. it would be all extra wonderful experience to give this crown (the soul winner's crown) to the Lord Jesus. (see below).

2 Tim. 3: 15-17 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness. That the man of God may he perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works. In order to be a witness, you must know the Scriptures and be able to use them as a tool in soul winning.

2 Timothy 2:23-25 But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they do gender strifes. And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; The above verses give instruction in witnessing. Don't push, but lead and share the Scriptures with the one you are witnessing too. it's the Word of God that brings conviction and repentance. If we KISS (Keep it Simply Simple), the Holy Spirit is free to do His job.

1 Thessalonians 2:19 For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing? Are not even ye in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at his coming? This Crown of rejoicing is the soul winner's crown. This crown along with the four other crowns are not for our glory, but when we see the Lord Jesus we shall place them at His feet in adoration and worship, What a joy it will be to bring these and place them before Him.

I Timothy 6: 11-21 But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.
12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.
13 ¶ I give thee charge in the sight of God, who quickeneth all things, and before Christ Jesus, who before Pontius Pilate witnessed a good confession;
14 That thou keep this commandment without spot, unrebukeable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ:
15 Which in his times he shall shew, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords;
16 Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen.
17 Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy;
18 That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate;
19 Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.
20 O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called:
21 Which some professing have erred concerning the faith. Grace be with thee. Amen.

Blessing of Chastening

Optional Scripture Reading: Hebrews 12: 1-12

 

TWe do not often think of chastening as being a blessing, yet the Psalmist wrote: Blessed is the man whom the Lord chastenest. 0 Lord, and teachest him out of thy law. Ps.94:12.
The Hebrew word for blessed means "happy, very Happy." (Youngs Concordance) The writer of Proverbs said My son, despise not the chastening of the Lord; neither be weary of His correction: for whom the Lord loveth He correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.
3:11,12.

"Whenever God's people are exposed to persecution or anguish, they need to take heed to this admonition, or consolation in Proverbs." (E.S. English) The Greek word for chastening is paideuoo and "signifies the discipline or training of a child by its parents. We are not to despise, or make light of: the chastening of the Lord, remembering that whom He loves He chastens.. Chastening, it is evident, is not judgment from God; it is His discipline, directed to His own children because He loves them. We must bear in mind that nothing touches the Christian apart from the permissive will of the Father in heaven. Therefore we must not look upon our trials as by chance, or as unnecessary. They may come from the world, it is true, but they are allowed of God. They are for our training and, if we would be obedient children, we will learn the lessons that they teach." (English) The writer of Hebrews also says If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not? 12:7, 8. So there is blessing in knowing if we are going through chastisement that God is dealing with us as His children. We read in Job 5:17 Behold, happy is the man whom God correcteth: therefore despise not thou the chastening of the Lord. To the church of Laodicea John wrote: As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore and repent. Revelation 3: 19.

Thought: "God loves us the way we are, but He loves us too much to leave us that way." (The Lifeline)

Hebrews 12: 1-12 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,
2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
3 For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds.
4 ¶ Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin.
5 And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him:
6 For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.
7 If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?
8 But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons.
9 Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live?
10 For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness.
11 Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.

Blessed Are All Who Trust in God

Optional Scripture Reading: Psalm 37: 1-11

 

Faith is the foundation of all spiritual and personal blessing. Sometimes we get the idea that the path of sin is the path of blessing, because there is pleasure in sin. In Hebrews 11:25 we read how Moses, by faith refused the pleasures of sin. In Proverbs 13:15... we read, the way of transgressors is hard. There is no real joy and happiness in sin. There is only pleasure for a short season. In the end, there is always a bigger hole in our souls than the one we are trying to fill. This is why and how addictions develop. God has ever ordained that it should be so.

This life is so uncertain. People can suffer in righteousness and prosper in wickedness. They can also suffer in wickedness and prosper in righteousness. We read in Psalm 73:3 where the author says, .... I saw the prosperity of the wicked.
This being true if we suffer, better to suffer in righteousness than suffer in sin, and so too it is better to prosper in righteousness than sin. In I Peter 3: 17 we read that it is better, if the will of God be so, that ye suffer for well doing, than for evil doing.

Some people get all hung up because the Bible says that the godly will suffer in this world. We need to realize that all suffer in this world. The only real question that remains then is why and how much. Without faith one is full of doubts and fears.
So that even if there is prosperity it does not bring happiness. Thank God that through faith, we can find a peace and joy of heart that this world can never take away.

Psalm 37: 1-11<<A Psalm of David.>> Fret not thyself because of evildoers, neither be thou envious against the workers of iniquity.
2 For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and wither as the green herb.
3 Trust in the LORD, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed.
4 Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.
5 Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.
6 And he shall bring forth thy righteousness as the light, and thy judgment as the noonday.
7 ¶ Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for him: fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass.
8 Cease from anger, and forsake wrath: fret not thyself in any wise to do evil.
9 For evildoers shall be cut off: but those that wait upon the LORD, they shall inherit the earth.
10 For yet a little while, and the wicked shall not be: yea, thou shalt diligently consider his place, and it shall not be.
11 But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.

The Blessings of Godly Friends

Optional Scripture Reading: I Samuel l8:1-4

 

Probably one of Scriptures best examples of a great friendship can be seen between Jonathan and David.
Notice in 1 Samuel 18:1 the relationship of these two men, ...the soul of Jonathan was knit with the sou1 of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. Their love was tied or bound together.

Though many of us could say that we have plenty of friends, would we be able to say that we have godly friends? Do they reflect the love and character of our Lord and Savior? Do they encourage us to follow Christ? Scripture has a lot to say about who we should and shouldn't make friendships with.

One of the biggest blessings of a godly friend is the help that they can offer. Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 says Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when lie falleth; for he hath not another to help him up.

It could be that all we need is a listening ear, a source of encouragement, advice that points us in the right direction, or maybe some strong, bold words to warn us about the direction we may be heading. Whatever the case may be, a true friend will be there to help when we have fallen.

Though friends may be good, godly friends are better. And our heavenly Father is the truest and godliest friend of all. Psalm 37:23-24 The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way. Though he fall, he shall not utterly cast down: for the LORD upholdeth him with his hand.

I Samuel l8:1-4 And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.
2 And Saul took him that day, and would let him go no more home to his father’s house.
3 Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul.
4 And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was upon him, and gave it to David, and his garments, even to his sword, and to his bow, and to his girdle.

Blessed are Those Who are Faithful

Optional Scripture Reading: Hebrews 11

 

When we read the above chapter we see these great Old Testament warriors of the faith. Men and women who were not afraid to broadcast their faith, not by word of mouth only, but by action and deeds which glorified God. Would to God, we had Christians today who were like those saints of old.


Following are several things for which Christians hope:


1. Well done good and faithful servant - Matthew 25:23 .... Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.

2. The resurrection of the saints - John 14:1-3 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if 1 go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

3. Looking for that blessed Hope - Titus 2:13, 15 Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee.


4. Being like Christ - 1 John 3:1-3 Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.

Hebrews 11. Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
2 For by it the elders obtained a good report.
3 Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.
4 ¶ By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh.
5 By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God.
6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

Blessing of Following Christ

In the early years of the ministry we read of Jesus calling men to follow Him. And Jesus, walking by the Sea of Galilee saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers. All He saith unto them, Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men. Matt. 4:18- 19. And their response was And they straightway left their nets, and followed Him. 4:20. And going on...He saw two other brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in a ship with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and He called them. 4:21. AI their response was And they immediately left the ship and their father, and followed Him. 4:22. And there were others: Matthew or Levi, Philip, and Nathanael.

Later in their ministry Peter said to Jesus Behold, we have forsaken all, and followed thee; what shall we have therefore? John 19:27. Jesus' response was Verily I say unto you, that ye which have followed Me, ill the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of His glory, ye also shall sit upon thrones, judging the 12 tribes of Israel. 19:28. So not only did they have the blessing of walking with Him and fellowshiping with Him on earth, but there were future blessings as well.

Jesus also made the promise I am the light of the world: he that followeth Me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. John 8: 12.

Probably one of the great blessings in following the Lord is found in the words of Jesus: Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men. Matt. 4 "There are many worthy pursuits in life. There are many desires to which we may rightly cling, but there is only . passion for the blood-bought heart; that is the all-controlling purpose which brought the Son of God from the skies drove Him to the cross - the passion for the salvation of men. And when He putteth forth His own sheep, He goeth before them, and they follow Him: for they know His voice. John 10:4.

The Blessing of Liberty

Optional Scripture Reading: Galatians 5:1,13-16

 

There is a great deal of confusion over the concept of authority. God has delegated important authority to human government, parents, and the local church. Yet we need to realize that God has set no authority above or equal to Himself. Duties never conflict! Man has no authority, but that which has been delegated by God.

Jesus Himself said, (Matthew 28:18) ... All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Therefore, if we faithfully do our duty to God, we have fulfilled all other duties.

Our founding fathers recognized this principle. They realized that liberty is not something the government gives to us. Rather it is something that God has given us. Thus, God would have all men free from the bondage of sin and free to serve Him. We need to realize that the enemy ever seeks to blind our minds and bring us into bondage to sin our corrupt authority. If we really believe as we ought no one call really take our liberty from us. They may bind our bodies, and they may kill our bodies, but we ourselves must yield to evil.

No wonder Jesus could say, (John 8:36) If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.
There is such a thing as an illegal law. The prophet Isaiah recognized this problem and pronounced a curse on all who would abuse power. In the book of Isaiah (10:1) we read, Woe unto them that decree unrighteous decrees, .... To turn aside the needy from judgment, and to take away the right from... my people ...., and that they may rob the fatherless!

Liberty and important human rights are not things we get from the government. They are already given to all by almighty God.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. From the Declaration of Independence.

The Blessing of His Imminent Return

Optional Scripture Reading: Luke 12: 35-40

 

God makes it clear that His Son will some day come back to earth for his people. When He does, this will be the beginning of what is called the tribulation. Luke 12:40 tells us to Be ye therefore ready also; for the Son of man cometh at an hour when ye think not. Because no one knows when Jesus will return for His people, we must always be ready. Scripture gives us many illustrations of what His coming will be like.

In Matthew chapter twenty-five His return is compared to ten virgins awaiting the bridegroom. They knew not when he would come-- only that he was in fact coming. The Bible tells us that five were wise and five were foolish. The five that were wise were prepared for his coming (they had the oil that they needed for their lamps). The five that were foolish thought that they had plenty of time to get the oil that they needed. Then the day came when the bridegroom returned, the five that were ready met the bridegroom and the five that were not ready missed out altogether.

Previously in Matthew 24, another illustration is given. Jesus said to Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come. But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known ijn what watch the thief would come, he would have wqtched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up. Therefore be ye also ready; for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.

Just think of the joy and the blessing that the five virgins shared. Now think about the regret of the five unprepared virgins and the man who was not ready for the thief.

Our Savior will come as a thief in the night. Will you be ready and watching for His appearing?

Matthew 25: 1-13. Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom.
2 And five of them were wise, and five were foolish.
3 They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them:
4 But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps.
5 While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept.
6 And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him.
7 Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps.
8 And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out.
9 But the wise answered, saying, Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves.
10 And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut.

12 But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not.

Blessed are Those Who Hear God

Optional Scripture Reading: Proverbs 8:32-36

 

Here is the first example of men and women who heard God. and responded:

"Abraham, Abraham." Abraham' was called to worship God by sacrificing his son, Isaac. Genesis 22:11-14 And the angel of the LORD called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here am I. And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast It withheld thy son, thine only son from me. And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son. And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovahjireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen.

Abraham was obedient. Nothing could have been worse for that one hundred year old man. Abraham had waited 99 years for this special blessing, and now God as asking him to kill the Son of Promise.

The above is a marvelous type of what God was planning for us. God only had one Son, Jesus, and Jesus came as the Son of Promise. Many promises in the Old testament were fulfilled in Jesus, and He alone could fulfill them. Jesus would bring salvation to a lost and dying world. Matthew 1:21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.

Jesus as the Son of Promise came that we might learn worship God the of truth and righteousness. He came to teach us, especially how to worship God and live among our fellow men. Jesus taught by example, He shunned temptation and was victorious over it. He was obedient. Isaac was obedient. Isaac was bound, by his father,and did not complain, Jesus was crucified in complete obedience to His Father and did not complain. So we should worship and be obedient as they were.

Proverbs 8:32-36 Now therefore hearken unto me, O ye children: for blessed are they that keep my ways.
33 Hear instruction, and be wise, and refuse it not.
34 Blessed is the man that heareth me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors.
35 For whoso findeth me findeth life, and shall obtain favour of the LORD.
36 But he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul: all they that hate me love death.

Blessing of Answered Prayer

Optional Scripture Reading: Acts 12:1-19

 

Scripture gives us many illustrations of answered prayer.

In Acts 12 the church is seen praying for Peter who was imprisoned. Prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him. 12:5. The Lord heard their prayers and delivered him miraculously from prison. But like a lot of people today, they were surprised when God answered their prayers. When Peter arrived at the home of Mary, mother of John Mark, where the prayer meeting was held, those who were there did not believe he had been released. 12:12-16.

Paul and Silas were imprisoned in Philippi for preaching and in prison. Paul and Silas prayed and sang praises to God. Acts 16:25. God sent an earthquake, the doors of the prison were opened and they were set free. This resulted in the jailer and his family getting saved. 16:27-34.

Elijah prayed earnestly that it might not rain and it did not rain for 3 years and 6 months. He prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, James 5:17,18.

"Ten Conditions for Answered Prayer:

  1. We must pray in the name of the Lord Jesus. John 14:13,14; 16:24.
  2. We must abide in Christ. John 15:7.
  3. We must be in fellowship with God. That means there must be no unconfessed sin in our lives. Ps. 66:18; Prov. 28:13; lsa. 59:12; 1John 1:9.
  4. We must ask in faith. God wants us to trust Him. He is grieved when we doubt Him. Mark 11:24; Heb. 11:6; James 1:6.
  5. We must ask according to His will. I John 5:14.
  6. We must keep His commandments; not a legalistic observation of the Ten Commandments, but a sincere desire to do the will of God from the heart. 1John 3:22; Eph. 6:6.
  7. We must pray fervently. James 5: 16.
  8. We must have a right relationship between husbands and wives. I Peter 3:7.
  9. We must pray with importunity, steadfastness, and persistence. Luke 11:5-10.
  10. We must have first forgiven others. Mark 11:25,26."

Blessed are The Poor In Spirit

Optional Scripture Reading: James 4:1-10

 

In our world, we hear a lot about the importance of pride and self esteem. People will say you have to take pride in yourself and your work. And there are many that are working to build the self esteem of our young people thinking that it will help their academic achievement. The result has shown that children become more self absorbed, and do worse mentally, emotionally, and spiritually..

It is important that those who us who know and believe the word of God understand that this kind of linking is completely out of step with God's word. That is why it has negative results.
In James 4:6 we read, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.

It is essential that we have confidence or faith in order to achieve anything in life. And yet it is critical that our faith and confidence is in God, His goodness, His provision, His purpose and not in ourselves. Without faith it is impossible to please God. Hebrews 11:6.

It is God's purpose to show us that we need Him. Therefore, if we proceed in the flesh and pride, we are doomed to ultimate failure. I thought Pastor Sawtell put so well when people expressed their frustration at not using the word pride. They would feel a need to express pride in their children etc.. He said use the words thanks and gratitude instead. "I am thankful you did such and such. It was the right thing to do."

If we would find long term happiness and blessing we lust understand our own weakness and sin. We dare not trust the arm of flesh for it will fail us. We must be ever sure that our faith and trust is in God. We would be wise to ever remember the admonition of Romans 14:23. In this text we read, whatsoever is not of faith is sin.

Our lives simply cannot be blessed apart from faith in God.

James 4:1-10 From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members?
2 Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.
3 Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.
4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.
5 Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy?
6 But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.
7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.
9 Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness.

Blessed are the Merciful

Optional Scripture Reading: Psalm 41

 


Jonah 4:2 describes God as being a gracious God, and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repentest thee of the evil;.

The area that we are going to focus on today is His mercy.
Webster defines mercy as being an act of kindness, tender hearted. No one would argue against the tender heart of God, nor would they say that He is not full of kindness. As we seek to follow the example of Christ we too must demonstrate acts of kindness and have a tender heart toward others.

With God's mercy we find His forgiveness, salvation, and love for us. Because Christ has shown us these things we must forgive others as Christ hath forgiven us. We need to share the love of Christ and. the plan of salvation. As we focus on these three areas (God's forgiveness, salvation, and love), can we say that these three areas are evident in our lives? It seems to be that we continue to see more and more bitterness and less and less true forgiveness. And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses. But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses. Mark 11: 25-6.

The love of Christ reached out to all people no matter the color, nationality, or status.
Christ is still showing that same love today, but could it be that we as Christians are failing to follow His example to reach out to all people? His plan of salvation is simple, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved.

Are we doing our part to point people to the cross? God has been merciful to us as sinners. We ought to show the same mercy to others. Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. Matthew 5:7.

Psalm 41 <<To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.>> Blessed is he that considereth the poor: the LORD will deliver him in time of trouble.
2 The LORD will preserve him, and keep him alive; and he shall be blessed upon the earth: and thou wilt not deliver him unto the will of his enemies.
3 The LORD will strengthen him upon the bed of languishing: thou wilt make all his bed in his sickness.
4 I said, LORD, be merciful unto me: heal my soul; for I have sinned against thee.
5 ¶ Mine enemies speak evil of me, When shall he die, and his name perish?
6 And if he come to see me, he speaketh vanity: his heart gathereth iniquity to itself; when he goeth abroad, he telleth it.
7 All that hate me whisper together against me: against me do they devise my hurt.
8 An evil disease, say they, cleaveth fast unto him: and now that he lieth he shall rise up no more.
9 Yea, mine own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, which did eat of my bread, hath lifted up his heel against me.

Blessed are the Pure in Heart

Optional Scripture Reading: Psalm 51

 

Matthew 5:8 Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.

The word "Blessed" can also be translated "Happy." There is 'no doubt that Abraham was a man blessed of God. He followed God and obeyed in pureness of heart. James 2:23 and the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God. Abraham's faith was the instrument that permitted God to call him His friend.

Abraham's obedience made him the father of the Jewish nation, and provided an inheritance of the Fertile Crescent. The Holy Land was given to Abraham's children for an everlasting possession.

In Matt 5:8 we also have a everlasting promise, that is, we will see God. However, if we are working toward perfection, then we shall fail, because we are not saved, nor do we grow by works (Eph. 2:8, 9). The blood of Christ, shed on Calvary's cross, is the only hope of our salvation and seeing God.

A clean body, a pure mind, a conscience free from guilt and walking in the Spirit is the only way to have a pure heart.
Ephesians 5:18 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit. The last phrase in (Eph. 5:18) is in the Greek a "present, imperative," which means "be being filled, " i.e., day by day, and moment by moment.

In David's prayer in Psalms 51: 10 Create in me a clean heart, 0 God; and renew a right spirit within me., David's blackened conscience was giving him a bad time. He knew he was out of fellowship th God and the only recourse for him to follow was to confess his sin and then and only then, was the fellowship restored. Psalm 51:4 Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest. After that simple prayer, David's fellowship was restored and he was forgiven.

Lastly, Paul recognized his own sinful heart when he met Jesus on the Damascus Turnpike. He saw himself for what he was and his heart was changed from Persecuting Saul, to Preaching Paul. And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? Acts 9:6.

Yes, God will bless the pure in heart!

Blessings of God's Word

Today we are thinking of the blessings of God's Word, the Bible. First of all it is a blessing and a privilege to have the Word of God to read. Have you considered what it would be like not to have a Bible? Most of us not only have a Bible, but we have numerous Bibles in our homes with ready access to any of them. If only we'd read them!


"What some great men said about the Bible:

Blessed Are Those Who Wait On God

Optional Scripture Reading: Psalm 25:1-7

5 Lead me in thy truth, and teach me: for thou art the God of my salvation; on thee do I wait all the day.

Patience and faith are twins. If we had the desires of our hearts, and if things were as they ought be, there would be no need for either patience or faith. We live in a very demanding and instant age. We don't want to wait for anyone or anything. This is exactly what we ought to expect as spiritual corruption grows and we approach the end of the age.

I have heard it said that while there is life, there is hope. But this is not light. Jesus Christ in His resurrection from the dead conquered death. Therefore, we need to realize that while there is God, there is hope. In other words, we cannot put time limits on God. He is beyond time and space. He will do all that He has promised, but it will be in His time, and not ours.

As we seek God in faith sometimes He works in very powerful ways to accomplish what we ask. But then their are times like the apostle Paul found with his thorn in the flesh where God says no to the things we ask.

But we dare not forget that there are times when we must learn to wait on God. I think that this is the most difficult. And yet it is as we learn to wait on God that we grow in grace. I think one of the biggest mistakes that those who are immature in the faith make is failing to wait on God. I remember hearing a young preacher one time say, "let's do something, even if it's wrong". While I appreciate the zeal, such a spirit leads to a lot of trouble. More mature minds are content to simply wait on God.

 

Psalm 25<<A Psalm of David.>> Unto thee, O LORD, do I lift up my soul.
2 O my God, I trust in thee: let me not be ashamed, let not mine enemies triumph over me.
3 Yea, let none that wait on thee be ashamed: let them be ashamed which transgress without cause.

Blessings of Walking the Way of the Word

Optional Scripture Reading: II Cor. 6:14-18

 

The Word of God has much to say about the relationships that a Christian should or should not have. In Psalm 1:1 we get a pretty good understanding of who our closest friends should not be. Blessed is the man that walkest not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. In this verse God says blessed or happy is the man that does not follow these types of men. Lest there be any confusion, we are to follow the example of Christ and be friendly to sinners, but do not take part in their sin.

Often times the people who we associate with are most likely the people who we will be like. We as Christians must be very careful with who or what we allow to influence our lives. The fact is that we all live in a world that is filled with corruption and wickedness. But at the same time, all Christians have the Word of God and the power of the Holy Spirit to control our lives. Now the question is which one do we allow to influence and control our lives. James 4:4 tells us whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.

Going back to Psalm one, the man that is blessed of God avoids the wicked and is a man whose delight is in the law of the LORD; and in His law doth he meditate day and night.

Are you missing the blessings of God because you are choosing the way of the world rather than the way of the Word?

15 And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel?

Blessed are Those Who Hunger and Thirst after Righteousness

Optional Scripture Reading: Matthew 5:3-12

 

Ths, the fourth Beatitude, and has been referred to as the "First of five gates to happiness." Hungering and thirsting are natural appetites of the body. So the natural necessity of the born again soul is to desire fellowship with God and our Lord Jesus Christ. True happiness can only come from the Lord.

Many is the Christian who is unhappy. They relate to the Christian experience as bearing a bitter cross and always suffering for the Lord. This type of Christian sees him or herself as a martyr.
Hebrews 6:4-5 For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come...
Many is the Christian who tastes, but does not eat. The reason, they still have their hearts in the world and desire the things of the flesh more than the things of God. It's a shame that so many who claim to be followers of the Christ walk far, far behind the Him. They never sit down front, they never witness, they never serve the Lord. Do you suppose those who now follow afar off will enjoy being at the Wedding Supper of the Lamb? Will they be embarrassed when they see the Lord?

Have you ever wondered why the Spirit filled the Apostles and what marvelous things they did? It was because they spent time studying the Word of God and in prayer. We cannot expect to have our souls fed if we do not eat of spiritual things. Have you ever been so thirsty for water that no other liquid would quench your thirst? Have you ever been so hungry for a particular food that nothing you eat would satisfy your craving?

May it be that God's Word will become the only food and drink that will satisfy your soul's deep longing.

Matthew 5:3-12 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.

Blessings of Parents

Optional Scripture Reading: Psalm 113

 

In our devotional for today we want to see how parents can and should be a blessing to children. Being a blessing to each other is a two-way street.
In Judges 13:12 Manoah asked a question of the angelic messenger, possibly the Lord Himself (the angel of the Lord), who came to announce the birth of Samson. How shall we order the child, and how shall we do unto him?

The Lord had given instructions to Manoah's wife on a previous visit, 13:3-7, that the son to be born to them was to be a Nazarite to God from the womb to the day of his death. v.7. They were to remember this in bringing him up. Parents can and should be a witness and a good example before their children and be faithful in teaching them the truths of God's Word. By doing so they will be a blessing to their children.

"When a child is born into the world, the parents should:

1. Regard the child as having entered upon an immortal existence.

2. Heartily dedicate him to God, as Hannah did Samuel.

3. Pray for him, and teach him to pray.

4. Store in his mind the truth of God's Word.

5. Set him a Christian example.

6. Train him to habits of obedience, order, generosity, industry and economy.

7. Check the first buddings of evil, and cherish the first indications of right feeling.

8. Rest not until his heart is given to Christ." (Benedicte's Scrapbook)

The writer of Proverbs wrote: A wise son maketh a glad father, 10:1; 15:20. The father of the righteous shall greatly rejoice; and he that begetteth a wise child shall have joy of him. Thy father and mother shall be glad, and she that bare thee shall rejoice. 23:24,25. Jesus said: Honor thy father and mother. Matthew 19:19.

Psalm 113: Praise ye the LORD. Praise, O ye servants of the LORD, praise the name of the LORD.

Blessed Are Those Who Seek Righteousness

...seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness;

Optional Scripture Reading: Matthew 7:7-11

When you think of all the promises of the word of God, those who fail to find blessing, must be seeking things of the flesh or not seeking in faith. We are told for example that God will give us wisdom if we ask in faith (James 2).

It has been said that behind God's commands, He puts omnipotent power. If one had righteousness, there would be no need to hunger and thirst after it. But Jesus said that those who have such hunger and thirst will be filled. I like that.

You see there are those today who hunger and thirst after sin and the things of this world, but they are never filled. They are never satisfied. The more they try and feed their souls on sin and this world, the bigger their hunger and thirst. God has created this world that it be so. This is how addictions develop.


God would have us understand that the problems of this world are not financial and fleshly. They are moral and spiritual. If we would be satisfied, we must learn to love God. We must learn that it is more blessed to give than to receive.

There are many Christians today that do not have a Biblical understanding. They think that if they would be blessed, that they will loose out on the blessings of this life. Jesus taught no such doctrine. Jesus said, Matthew 6:33 ..... seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. God help us to understand that blessing in this life and the next comes from putting God first. There is simply no such thing as satisfaction and blessing in sin.

Matthew 7:7-11 Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:
8 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.
9 Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone?
10 Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent?
11 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?
