The Family

Luke 2:41-52

The Bible has a lot to say about the spiritual life of the family. Relative to children we read, Colossians 3:20 Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord. Our faith manifests itself in the spirit with which young people respond to parents. The word “obey ” has the idea of hearing and doing. This is the same word we find used relative to servants. Ephesians 6:5 Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ;…. Here we see that the obedience goes beyond man to God. In other words, it is not just a boss or a parent, but we need to see the hand of God working in and through authority. If we believe this, there will be a reverent spirit toward leadership. Relative to wives in particular, we read, Ephesians 5:33the wife see that she reverence her husband.

Most preachers that I have known do not like the title "Reverend". I think this is due to the idea in some denominations that there is some kind of priesthood. Before the Lord, we are all priests. Yet, it is not just wives, but all under authority need this understanding relative to leadership. Leaders are not there on their own, but by divine appointment. Perhaps one of the reasons we are having so many problems with young people today is that many adults are not setting a Biblical example. Just listen to radio talk shows today. Our culture delights in irreverence. We need to remember that God does not.

When King Saul came to destruction, because of his sin and failure, King David did not rejoice. He ever maintained a spirit of reverence to the Lord’s anointed. We read in 2 Samuel 1:20 Tell it not in Gath, publish it not in the streets of Askelon; lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice, lest the daughters of the uncircumcised triumph. When parents and our leaders fail us, it is not cause for joy. It is cause for sorrow. If we were reverent as David was, we would understand this. A man’s home is his castle. The state and even the church ought to respect this.

Reference verses:

Luke 2:41-52

Now every year his parents went to Jerusalem for the festival of the Passover.
42 And when he was twelve years old, they went up as usual for the festival.
43 When the festival was ended and they started to return, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but his parents did not know it.
44 Assuming that he was in the group of travelers, they went a day’s journey. Then they started to look for him among their relatives and friends.
45 When they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem to search for him.
46 After three days they found him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions.
47 And all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers.
48 When his parents saw him they were astonished; and his mother said to him, "Child, why have you treated us like this? Look, your father and I have been searching for you in great anxiety."
49 He said to them, "Why were you searching for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?"
50 But they did not understand what he said to them.
51 Then he went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them. His mother treasured all these things in her heart.
52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and in years, and in divine and human favor. NKJV

Things Dedicated to God

Deuteronomy 20:5, 2 Samuel 8:11, Numbers 7:11

Houses:

Deuteronomy 20:5 And the officers shall speak unto the people, saying, What man is there that hath built a new house, and hath not dedicated it? let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man dedicate it. Have you dedicated your home to the Lord?

Silver and Gold:

2 Samuel 8:11 Which also king David did dedicate unto the LORD, with the silver and gold that he had dedicated of all nations which he subdued; Have you dedicated your bank account, stocks and bonds to the Lord?

The House of Worship:

Numbers 7:1 And it came to pass on the day that Moses had fully set up the tabernacle, and had anointed it, and sanctified it, and all the instruments thereof, both the altar and all the vessels thereof, and had anointed them, and sanctified them. The tabernacle of the Lord was dedicated. Our Church was dedicated when it was built. That dedication was unto the Lord. Dedication means it is to be used for the Lord’s glory, and is a place where God’s people meet to worship Him. (Read 1 Kings 8 and reflect upon the dedication of the Temple by King Solomon).

Our Tithes and our Offerings:

2 Chronicles 31:12 And brought in the offerings and the tithes and the dedicated things faithfully. Hezekiah looked upon the things brought before the Lord as dedicated. It is both the gift and the giver that is dedicated before the Lord.
The Lord Jesus reminded us in Matthew 5:23-24 …. if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift. If we are disobedient in our giving, our gift is not received of the Lord. Oh yes, we give, but not with a broken and contrite heart. In the life of a Christian there must be a transparent relationship between God and man, and our fellow Christians.

Ourselves:

If our relationship with the Lord is broken because of sin, there is no acceptance of our dedication of our gifts. God is not mocked! We cannot deceive Him! We only deceive ourselves!

Reverence to: God, the Holy Spirit

Acts 2:37-47

Today let’s take a look at 2 important aspects of the Holy Spirit, the third person in the Trinity. First, we find that He is given to those that have placed their faith and trust in God the Son, Jesus, as a guarantee of salvation. He literally comes into our bodies and dwells in our lives to help us grow spiritually, part of the work of sanctification. We have amazingly, been freely given, the most powerful force in the universe, to help us live joyfully, even in the midst of difficult tribulation. Secondly, all Christians have this awesome power available to them and yet, many have never learned to use it or even worse, just simply have chosen to ignore it. The bible calls this sin, the quenching of the Holy Spirit in 1 Thes. 5:19. There are other sins of lying, grieving, blaspheming, and rejecting the Holy Spirit as well. But the sin of quenching the Holy Spirit seems to be one area that many folks are so overcome by. Thomas Manton put it like this: “Fire is quenched by pouring on water or by withdrawing fuel; so the Spirit is quenched by living in sin, which is like pouring water on a fire; or by not improving our gifts and graces, which is like withdrawing fuel from the hearth.”

If we would allow God, the Holy Spirit to guide us daily, and we would immediately busy ourselves with the spiritual gifts He has given us, we would then see such a change in our families and churches. As is given in today’s text when the power of the Holy Spirit came upon the church there, “and many were being saved and added to them.” So let’s be encouraged today to confess sin, to ask God the Holy Spirit to display His power in our lives, and to help us allow Him free access in our hearts, so that His power can be used to change us, and others for Him. This will bring Him the true Reverence that He wants and deserves in our lives!

Gracious God the Holy Spirit, show me areas in my life where I have quenched you and forgive my sin. Help me to live a life that is obedient and pleasing to you. Help me to allow you free reign and access to my heart and life. Thank you for teaching me the truths of God’s Word. And especially, thank you for the guarantee of Salvation that you have brought to my life! I pray in Jesus name, Amen.

Reference verses:

Acts 2: 37-47. Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?
38. Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
39. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.
40. And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation.
41. Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.
42. And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.
43. And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles.
44. And all that believed were together, and had all things common;
45. And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need.
46. And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart,
47. Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.

Humanity

James 3:2-10

In this month’s devotional, we have been looking at the idea of respect or reverence. In today’s text, we read concerning the words we speak: James 3:9, 10 Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God. 10 Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be. The point is made, subtly, that if we really respect God, we ought not be able to so freely curse people who are made in His image. In other words, there ought to be a respect for people.

Sadly, all of us terribly fail in this respect. Consider this for example, in Jude 8, 9 we read relative to apostates, 8 Likewise also these filthy dreamers defile the flesh, despise dominion, and speak evil of dignities. 9 Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee. The devil is not made in the image of God, yet Michael was careful to show due reverence. How much more ought we to show reverence to all that are made in his image.

There is some political debate in this country relative to the burning of the American flag. Some think that the right of free speech gives anyone the right to burn a flag. Others are convinced that if we are citizens, we need to show proper respect for the flag. They rightly understand that we have to teach respect for something. I made this point when it came to some states that still choose to fly the confederate flag. That flag means more to Southern states than racism and slavery, and everything done in the name of the stars and stripes was not always pure and right. I do not know of many Christians who would burn an American flag. Yet, I know many that give very little respect for people they deem unworthy. I cannot think of anyone more unworthy than the devil. Yet, proper protocol demanded respect and Michael gave proper respect. Are we respectful in the things we say and do?

Reference verses:
James 3:2-10. For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body.
3. Behold, we put bits in the horses' mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body.
4. Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth.
5. Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!
6. And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.
7. For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind:
8. But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.
9. Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God.
10. Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.

Elohim, Jehovah, Adonahy

Acts 9

The above three names are the primary names for God. There are many other names, but most are what we call compound names that include the three above. In the King James Bible: Elohim is seen as “God.” Jehovah is “LORD ” and Adonahy “Lord.” We will look at the last name for today.

Adonahy is often used in respect toward a person, especially (Gen. 18:12) where Sarah refers to Abraham as lord. Lord or Master is used 290 times in the Bible and we want to see one of its meanings in the New Testament. Saul of Tarsus was on the road to Damascus, believing he was doing the will of God. He was going there to persecute the “followers of the way,” Christians. The Risen Lord Jesus changed all that when Saul saw a blinding light and heard his name called twice, “Saul, Saul.” Saul then used the words “Adonahy, Adonahy ” translated “Lord, Lord.” That calling was a call to “service.” Saul continued on to Damascus, blind, and led by the ones in his caravan. Three days later a Christian, named Ananias came to Saul and used the same word, the Lord “Adonahy ” sent me to you, when he introduced himself to Saul.

Persecuting Saul became preaching Paul when he recognized Jesus as Lord. Paul immediately called Jesus “Master.” Many Christians don’t even know Jesus as the Lord of their lives, let alone recognizing Him as their Master. Paul saw him self as a “bond slave ” which means he was a slave to the Lord of and by his own will. Paul ’s new life was in total submission to the will of the Lord, “Adonahy.”

When we see Jesus as Master we see what Paul saw. We put away the past life, desires, aspirations, goals, dreams etc. And daily we seek to do, say and be what the Lord wants us to be. Paul said, “I die daily.” He meant I am submissive to Jesus in all things. No part of Paul ’s being was held back, he truly was a slave in thought, word and deed. Try it, it will change your life when Jesus becomes the Master “Adonahy ” of you life.

Reference verses:
Acts 9
1. And Saul, yet breathing out threatenings and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, went unto the high priest,
2. And desired of him letters to Damascus to the synagogues, that if he found any of this way, whether they were men or women, he might bring them bound unto Jerusalem.
3. And as he journeyed, he came near Damascus: and suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven:
4. And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?
5. And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks.
6. And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do.
7. And the men which journeyed with him stood speechless, hearing a voice, but seeing no man.
8. And Saul arose from the earth; and when his eyes were opened, he saw no man: but they led him by the hand, and brought him into Damascus.
9. And he was three days without sight, and neither did eat nor drink.
10. And there was a certain disciple at Damascus, named Ananias; and to him said the Lord in a vision, Ananias. And he said, Behold, I am here, Lord.
11. And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the street which is called Straight, and inquire in the house of Judas for one called Saul, of Tarsus: for, behold, he prayeth,
12. And hath seen in a vision a man named Ananias coming in, and putting his hand on him, that he might receive his sight.
13. Then Ananias answered, Lord, I have heard by many of this man, how much evil he hath done to thy saints at Jerusalem:
14. And here he hath authority from the chief priests to bind all that call on thy name.
15. But the Lord said unto him, Go thy way: for he is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear my name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel:
16. For I will shew him how great things he must suffer for my name's sake.
17. And Ananias went his way, and entered into the house; and putting his hands on him said, Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest, hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost.
18. And immediately there fell from his eyes as it had been scales: and he received sight forthwith, and arose, and was baptized.
19. And when he had received meat, he was strengthened. Then was Saul certain days with the disciples which were at Damascus.
20. And straightway he preached Christ in the synagogues, that he is the Son of God.
21. But all that heard him were amazed, and said; Is not this he that destroyed them which called on this name in Jerusalem, and came hither for that intent, that he might bring them bound unto the chief priests?
22. But Saul increased the more in strength, and confounded the Jews which dwelt at Damascus, proving that this is very Christ.
23. And after that many days were fulfilled, the Jews took counsel to kill him:
24. But their laying await was known of Saul. And they watched the gates day and night to kill him.
25. Then the disciples took him by night, and let him down by the wall in a basket.
26. And when Saul was come to Jerusalem, he assayed to join himself to the disciples: but they were all afraid of him, and believed not that he was a disciple.
27. But Barnabas took him, and brought him to the apostles, and declared unto them how he had seen the Lord in the way, and that he had spoken to him, and how he had preached boldly at Damascus in the name of Jesus.
28. And he was with them coming in and going out at Jerusalem.
29. And he spake boldly in the name of the Lord Jesus, and disputed against the Grecians: but they went about to slay him.
30. Which when the brethren knew, they brought him down to Caesarea, and sent him forth to Tarsus.
31. Then had the churches rest throughout all Judaea and Galilee and Samaria, and were edified; and walking in the fear of the Lord, and in the comfort of the Holy Ghost, were multiplied.
32. And it came to pass, as Peter passed throughout all quarters, he came down also to the saints which dwelt at Lydda.
33. And there he found a certain man named Aeneas, which had kept his bed eight years, and was sick of the palsy.
34. And Peter said unto him, Aeneas, Jesus Christ maketh thee whole: arise, and make thy bed. And he arose immediately.
35. And all that dwelt at Lydda and Saron saw him, and turned to the Lord.
36. Now there was at Joppa a certain disciple named Tabitha, which by interpretation is called Dorcas: this woman was full of good works and almsdeeds which she did.
37. And it came to pass in those days, that she was sick, and died: whom when they had washed, they laid her in an upper chamber.
38. And forasmuch as Lydda was nigh to Joppa, and the disciples had heard that Peter was there, they sent unto him two men, desiring him that he would not delay to come to them.
39. Then Peter arose and went with them. When he was come, they brought him into the upper chamber: and all the widows stood by him weeping, and shewing the coats and garments which Dorcas made, while she was with them.
40. But Peter put them all forth, and kneeled down, and prayed; and turning him to the body said, Tabitha, arise. And she opened her eyes: and when she saw Peter, she sat up.
41. And he gave her his hand, and lifted her up, and when he had called the saints and widows, presented her alive.
42. And it was known throughout all Joppa; and many believed in the Lord.
43. And it came to pass, that he tarried many days in Joppa with one Simon a tanner.

Reverence to the Elderly and Seniors

Ephesians 5:20 – 6:4

God has ordained the family unit as the earthly authority that would bring Him reverence, glory, and honor. The head of the family is Christ, then the husband, then the wife, and then the children. This is God’s way of leadership in and for the home. As we study this today, let’s prayerfully consider and ponder how we should honor and respect the elderly, including our own parents, grandparents and so-forth.
In today’s society, we literally see a total breakdown of the family unit. Many parents have lost their love for the Lord and so are not teaching their children the proper respect for God and His Word. Dads and moms are getting divorces at the most alarming rate in history. Many children are not being taught the precepts of the Lord and are following in the parents footsteps, as our society is progressively becoming more fragmented. Many elderly folks are unwillingly getting moved into nursing homes and so forth. The family unit is in total disarray.
As believers, what can or should we do? I believe the answer lies in our text today from Ephesians, in teaching and living in obedience and giving honor to those placed in authority over us. As a child, I was taught this over and over again. I involuntarily came along at first, when my folks went to visit the Nursing Homes, to bring them a church service, or just a visit with a little music and prayer. I was taught to honor my father and my mother and all those that were in authority over me. I began to love and enjoy helping the elderly, visiting them and bringing the love of Christ into their lives. God’s grace, love and mercy is many times distributed by obedient believers unto others that have need. And what a blessing it is to be one that brings these precious gifts.
Dear Lord, as we teach our children by example to obey God’s Word, help us to show proper respect to the elderly by calling them Mr. And Mrs., by bringing the children along when helping the elderly in areas of need, and by regularly visiting the elderly in their homes. Thank You that reverence is something that is taught and then lived, and learned by example. May we bring glory to You as we bring the proper reverence to the elderly as you have asked us to; in Jesus Name, Amen.

Reference verses:
Ephesians 5:20 – 6:4. Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;
21. Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.
22. Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.
23. For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.
24. Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.
25. Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;
26. That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,
27. That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.
28. So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.
29. For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church:
30. For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.
31. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.
32. This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.
33. Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.
1. Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.
2. Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;)
3. That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.
4. And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.

The Human Body

Genesis 9:1-6

In our text today, we read about the special place humanity plays in creation. There are those today who teach that man is another animal. They teach that we ought to treat all species equally. They object to animals standing in the law as property. In our text we read, Genesis 9:3 Every moving thing that liveth shall be meat for you; even as the green herb have I given you all things. The only thing that has changed is that for those under the law, some moving things are unclean. Some Christians even believe some foods are unclean. Yet, the principle for Christians is given in 1 Timothy 4:4,5every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving: 5 For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.

This is not pride; it is the heritage of those who are made in the image of God. The respect for humanity that we have talked about extends to the human body. Note in particular Genesis 9:6 Whoso sheddeth man’s blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he man. Here we see the crime of murder involves a lack of respect for the image of God. Murder is not a crime against the soul or spirit. It is a crime against the body.

I know there are those who do not want to listen, but I would encourage you to open your heart to God. Consider Leviticus 19:28, Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh … nor print any marks upon you: I am the LORD. Leviticus 21:5 They shall not make…. any cuttings in their flesh. Though not specifically stated, I believe God forbids these pagan acts, because they show disrespect for the human body. God would not have us tattoo or pierce our bodies. Yet, this is not all. In burial, God would have us treat the body with respect. In the chapter on the resurrection, the body is illustrated seed that is sown. We read in 1 Corinthians 15:44 It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body. Farmers do not burn seed; they plant seed. In a Christian burial, we out to “plant” the body not burn it.

Reference verses:
Genesis 9
1. And God blessed Noah and his sons, and said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth.
2. And the fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth, and upon every fowl of the air, upon all that moveth upon the earth, and upon all the fishes of the sea; into your hand are they delivered.
3. Every moving thing that liveth shall be meat for you; even as the green herb have I given you all things.
4. But flesh with the life thereof, which is the blood thereof, shall ye not eat.
5. And surely your blood of your lives will I require; at the hand of every beast will I require it, and at the hand of man; at the hand of every man's brother will I require the life of man.
6. Whoso sheddeth man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he man.

Standing for Truth takes Discernment

Matthew 17:24, 25

According to custom every Jew 20 years old and above was required to pay a temple tax of half a shekel or two drachmas each year to help support the temple (cf. Ex. 30:13-15; Neh. 10:32). Both Peter and Jesus had apparently not yet paid their tax (Matt. 17:27b) for that year, so the collectors sought Peter out. Their question about the Lord’s not paying His tax implied that He was not keeping the Law. Peter responded that the Lord would pay the tax in compliance with the Law.

Before Peter spoke to the Lord about this matter, Jesus asked him if kings . . . collect duty and taxes from their own sons, or from others. Peter replied that kings do not collect taxes from family members, for they were exempt, but they do collect from others. The Lord was demonstrating to Peter that not only should He as King be tax-free, but also His disciples, as sons of the kingdom, should be free from such taxes (v. 26). They too had a privileged position, and the King should provide all they needed. However, the Lord did not intend at this time to make an issue (offend them, v. 27) over such a small point. The religious leaders were looking for accusations to use against Jesus. Peter was told to do something he really enjoyed: the Lord sent him fishing. He was to throw out his line and a special catch would be brought in. This fish would have in its mouth a specific four-drachma coin that would be the exact amount Peter needed to pay the tax for himself and for the Lord. (1)

It is important to note that when asked not to heal on the Sabbath; Jesus would hear none of it. What is the difference? Jesus would not allow something as important as the Sabbath to be redefined in a way to prohibit doing good deeds for people on the Sabbath. When it came to paying this temple tax, Jesus did not want to fight over money. Jesus was so much different from most who profess faith today. Most who profess faith today would be much quicker to fight over money than important spiritual principles. We are called to fight the enemy; not other believers. If we must contend with other believers, there should be some vitally important spiritual truth at the heart, or we should compromise. God is not honored when His people contend with one another because of fleshly lusts.

A Covetous Focus

Matthew 20:6-15Jesus told a parable in which a landowner . . . went out early in the morning and hired men to work in his vineyard for the day, at an agreed price of one denarius, the normal daily pay for a laborer. Later, about the third hour (around

9 a.m.) the landowner encouraged others in the marketplace also to work in the vineyard, not for a stipulated wage but for whatever is right. The landowner employed more laborers about the sixth hour (about noon) and at the ninth hour (3 p.m.), and even some at the eleventh hour (5 p.m.) when only one hour was left for labor.

When it came time (evening, i.e., 6 p.m.) for the landowner to pay the workers, he began with those who had worked the shortest amount of time and paid each of them one denarius. When those who had worked the entire day came for their reckoning, they thought they would receive more than a denarius. They had labored all day and borne the burden of the work and the heat of the day. They had agreed, however, to work for a stipulated amount and that is what they received (v. 13). The landowner argued that he had the right to do what he chose with his money. He reminded them they should not be envious of his generosity toward those who had labored only briefly.

By this illustration, Jesus was teaching that the matter of rewards is under the sovereign control of God, the “Landowner” in the parable. God is the One before whom all accounts will be settled. Many who have prominent places will someday find themselves demoted. And many who often find themselves at the end of the line will find themselves promoted to the head of the line: The last will be first, and the first will be last. (This supports what Jesus had said in 19:28-30.) In the final accounting, the Lord’s analysis will carry the greatest and only important weight. (1)

We hear that the early bird gets the worm. This is often true, but spiritual things work under much different principles. Sadly, most religious folk tend to carry the world into their faith. Those who were zealous and faithful were angry because they were equal to those who were not. They had a need to be better than others. This was anything but spiritual.

The Church
Ephesians 5:25-33

In our text, we read that the wife is one flesh with the husband. Therefore, the husband ought to love his wife as he loves his own body. Yet, we read in Ephesians 5:32 This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church. Whether or not husbands love their wives as they ought to, make no mistake, Jesus loves the church with perfect love.

Sadly, I do not think many Christians understand this. Too many seem to view the church and the ones God has called to leadership, as they view a restaurant and a waitress. The one is a place to get physical food and the person who brings it. The other is a place to get spiritual food and the one who brings it. Thus, the church and God’s servants are often viewed in terms of servants or ones we hire to do certain things rather than ones specially chosen and loved by God Himself.

If we understand this, we will not bring accusation against an elder save at the mouth of two or three witnesses. If we understand this, we will not move from church to church for light cause. If we understand this, we will conduct business differently than they do in corporate board meetings and congress. David had an understanding of these things, therefore, he dealt very carefully with King Saul. He wanted to make very sure he showed the proper reverence for the things of God.

It was this understanding that moved the Psalmist to cry out, Psalm 84:10 I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness. He had a great love and respect for the things of God. I fear in contemporary culture, we do not. If we did, we would not defend the salaries of corporate chief executive officers, while we condemn comparatively modest, but unusually high, preachers’ salaries. We would not defend excessive expenses of public buildings and condemn comparatively modest but unusually expensive church buildings. We need to remember what God has said. Malachi 3:8 Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings! An important way we honor God is through our giving to the local church. 1 Timothy 5:8 if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.

Reference verses:
Ephesians 5: 25-33. Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;

How Do We Live With Others?

1 Thes 3:3-5

Many years ago, I read a book titled, “Perennial Revival.” The whole book was on a continuous revival in Africa. Norman Grubbs, the author, told of a revival among the people where he worked. These new, native, Christians were living in complete transparency one with another and with God. They had learned a spiritual lesson that we American Christians need to learn. They were honest in all their relationships with each other. They were not finding fault with the missionary or other believers. They were practicing what the Bible teaches as best they could.

2 Thessalonians 3:3-5 The Lord is faithful, who shall establish you, and keep you from evil. 4 And we have confidence in the Lord touching you, that ye both do and will do the things which we command you. 5 And the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God, and into the patient waiting for Christ. The above three verses instruct us, as to our relationship with God and other Christians. We are a family, the body of Christ and should be defending our brothers and sisters instead of putting them down and seeking to defeat them.

The following verse is imperative: Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not after the tradition which he received of us. 2 Thess. 6. If there is one who is sowing discord or hindering the ministry, we should withdraw ourselves from that person until they repent and turn from their sin. As long as discord is in the church there will be no revival.

Verse 9 Not because we have not power, but to make ourselves an ensample (example) unto you to follow us. The minister of the church, the deacons, the Sunday school teachers, all who are in authority are to set an example before the rest of the congregation. The above are to be followers of Christ in every facet of their lives and establish the standards for the congregation to follow. RJS

Just a Little Sin Leavens the Whole Lump!

Matthew 16:11
How is it that ye do not understand that I spake it not to you concerning bread, that ye should beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees?

Here is the caution Christ gave them, to beware of the leaven of the Pharisees. He had now been discoursing with the Pharisees and Sadducees, and saw them to be men of such a spirit, that it was necessary to caution his disciples to have nothing to do with them. Disciples are in most danger from hypocrites; against those that are openly vicious they stand upon their guard, but against Pharisees, who are great pretenders to devotion, and Sadducees, who pretend to a free and impartial search after truth, they commonly lie unguarded: and therefore the caution is doubted, Take heed, and beware. The corrupt principles and practices of the Pharisees and Sadducees are compared to leaven; they were souring, and swelling, and spreading, like leaven; they fermented wherever they came. (1)

Their mistake concerning this caution; they thought Christ hereby upbraided them with their improvidence and forgetfulness that they were so busy attending to his discourse with the Pharisees, that therefore they forgot their private concerns. Or, because having no bread of their own with them, they must be beholden to their friends for supply, he would not have them to ask it of the Pharisees and Sadducees, or, for fear, lest, under pretence of feeding them, they should do them a mischief. Or, they took it for a caution, not to be familiar with the Pharisees and Sadducees, not to eat with them, whereas the danger was not in their bread but in their principles. He reproves their distrust of his ability and readiness to supply them in this strait; “O ye of little faith, why are ye in such perplexity because ye have taken no bread, that ye can mind nothing else, that ye think your Master is as full of it as you, and apply every thing he saith to that?” He does not chide them for their little forecast, as they expected he would. Note, parents and masters must not be angry at the forgetfulness of their children and servants, more than is necessary to make them take more heed another time; we are all apt to be forgetful of our duty. This should serve to excuse a fault, Peradventure it was an oversight. See how easily Christ forgave his disciples' carelessness, though it was in such a material point as taking bread; and do likewise. But that which he chides them for is their little faith. (2) O Lord, a little sin leavens the whole lump. Forgive us! Amen.

The Serpents of the Magicians
Exodus 7:8-13

It is interesting to note here, that Egyptian magicians duplicated the miracle that God gave Moses. Satan is the great counterfeiter. His great desire was to be like God. Therefore, we read in 2 Corinthians 11:14 … Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness… The greatest evil always takes on the cloak of righteousness. It is important to consider what is going on here. These men, at the bidding of Pharaoh, are trying to discredit Moses. We read in 2 Timothy 3:8 … as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith.

An important part of the work of evil is to confuse people as to the truth. Yet, in this account we see that God makes the truth clear to Pharaoh and his magicians. For we read that (Exodus 7:12) … they cast down every man his rod, and they became serpents: but Aaron’s rod swallowed up their rods. The works of light are always greater than the works of darkness. It is interesting to note that while God had Moses and Aaron, the devil also chose to work primarily through two individuals. We might ask ourselves, why does God allow evil to work in such powerful and similar ways? Does this not confuse people? We need to remember that salvation is tied to faith, and faith needs to have the right foundation. The apostates who opposed Moses and Aaron had faith, but their faith was tied to darkness rather than light. God blinds the eyes of all those who turn from the light. Therefore, if we allow our hearts to look for good reasons to reject the truth, we will never want for any.

Sadly, there are those who seem to think that if God does not work in a way that they can accept, it would be unjust for Him to condemn them. This is not true. As soon as a heart allows itself to turn from God, it will be filled with all kinds of good reasons to reject the truth. God hardens the hearts and blinds the minds of all that turn from Him. It is a dangerous thing to turn from the light.

Reference verses:
Exodus 7: 8-13. And the Lord spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying,
9. When Pharaoh shall speak unto you, saying, Shew a miracle for you: then thou shalt say unto Aaron, Take thy rod, and cast it before Pharaoh, and it shall become a serpent.
10. And Moses and Aaron went in unto Pharaoh, and they did so as the Lord had commanded: and Aaron cast down his rod before Pharaoh, and before his servants, and it became a serpent.
11. Then Pharaoh also called the wise men and the sorcerers: now the magicians of Egypt, they also did in like manner with their enchantments.
12. For they cast down every man his rod, and they became serpents: but Aaron's rod swallowed up their rods.
13. And he hardened Pharaoh's heart, that he hearkened not unto them; as the Lord had said.

The Christian’s Reaction to Government

Romans 13:1-4

1. Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God
. The government is ordained of God because there needs to be rules for society and protection from the criminal element. We have the greatest government in the world. It is weak because of political divisions and personal desire to gain power. However, it is still ordained of God and is the best we can expect to find until Jesus sets up His Kingdom in the Millennium.

2. Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.
The Bible sets the standard for church government. The church constitution is a set of rules that control the members and activities of our church. It also established the decorum and relationship among the church family.

3. For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same:
If we abide by the laws of the land we need not fear those in authority. It is good that we have an opportunity to change the leadership when we find those who are despotic and only seek to gain more power over the people. It is unfortunate that in the last few years we see ministers who are dictators instead of leaders. God forbid we have that happen in our church.

4 For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil. All four above verses in our text deal with temporal and ecclesiastical governments. Therefore, it behooves us to be obedient to leadership in the world, as well as, to God. We have freedom of speech and voting rights that are guaranteed by constitutional authority. Never let these be lost because of apathy or indifference. Let us pray for those in leadership and trust God to keep them in line.

Inspiration from OT – NT fulfilled concerning the Messiah
Isaiah 42:1-4, quoted in Matthew 12:14-21

In our text today, we see some interesting details that should cause us to evaluate our individual lives to see where we really stand in the spiritual sense. The very first thing that took place was an attitude of defiance from the people who refused to acknowledge that Jesus Christ is exactly who He said He was. They represent people who rebel against the Lordship of Christ, and who rebel against Him having any control over their lives. They had opportunity after opportunity, and they rejected and rejected. They rejected so much in fact, that their hearts were hardened and they forced Christ to withdraw from them. Have you ever been there or are you maybe there now, or do you know someone who is? Think about the implications here; God says in Gen. 6:3, “My spirit will not always strive with man.”

Why did Jesus withdraw from them? Jesus knew His hour had not yet come and He didn’t want to be pushed forward by public acclaim and opinion. He first needed to fulfill the mission of being the “Suffering Servant”. Jesus needed to teach the people what true Messiahship meant, that it was spiritual, rather than physical. He also needed to teach humility as He refused to be made a spectacle to “be seen by men”. He then gave an example of the principle He had taught: “When they persecute you in this city, flee to another” in Matt. 10:23. This whole passage proves that Jesus is God’s Chosen Servant, that He is God’s Beloved Son, and that God’s Spirit was fully upon Him in His physical form.

Finally, we see that Jesus’ work was to proclaim justice to all people, to show true humility by not arguing, or reacting, or fussing. We could learn something here! He came to earth as Savior, to love and encourage, to lead justice to victory and ultimately to give hope to all mankind. Do you personally know this God-man, the Suffering Servant, the one and only Savior of the World?!

O gracious and merciful Savior, how we praise You for Your great love for us. How we thank You for being our suffering Servant, showing us how to truly live pleasing to You. Guide us, O great Jehovah as we seek to conform our lives to Your example, in Jesus Name, Amen.

Reference verses:
Isaiah 42
1. Behold my servant, whom I uphold; mine elect, in whom my soul delighteth; I have put my spirit upon him: he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles.
2. He shall not cry, nor lift up, nor cause his voice to be heard in the street.
3. A bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench: he shall bring forth judgment unto truth.
4. He shall not fail nor be discouraged, till he have set judgment in the earth: and the isles shall wait for his law.

Matthew 12: 14-21. Then the Pharisees went out, and held a council against him, how they might destroy him.
15. But when Jesus knew it, he withdrew himself from thence: and great multitudes followed him, and he healed them all;
16. And charged them that they should not make him known:
17. That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying,
18. Behold my servant, whom I have chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall shew judgment to the Gentiles.
19. He shall not strive, nor cry; neither shall any man hear his voice in the streets.
20. A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench, till he send forth judgment unto victory.
21. And in his name shall the Gentiles trust.

The Frogs
Exodus 8:1-7

Because of Pharaoh 's disobedience to God, He sent ten plagues on the nation Egypt. In this plague, there is a terrible infestation of frogs. They have frogs in the kitchen and frogs in the bedroom. The Egyptians regarded frogs as having divine power. In the Egyptian pantheon the goddess Heqet had the form of a woman with a frog’s head. From her nostrils, it was believed, came the breath of life that animated the bodies of those created by her husband, the great god Khnum, from the dust of the earth. Walvoord, John F., and Zuck, Roy B., The Bible Knowledge Commentary, (Wheaton, Illinois: Scripture Press Publications, Inc.) 1983, 1985.

In this instance, Pharaoh's sorcerers also produce frogs, but they are powerless to get rid of the frogs, which is what Pharaoh wants and needs. Pharaoh calls for Moses in order to get relief for himself and the people. We are not told why, but Moses asks Pharaoh when he should pray. He gives Pharaoh the power to choose the time of his relief from this plague. It may be that Pharaoh 's heart hardened somewhat from the time he calls for Moses till the time he sees him, and does not seem as concerned about immediate relief. At any rate, he says tomorrow.

Why does he say tomorrow? It is not because he likes the frogs. I believe it is likely that he hopes the frogs will go away before the next day. In that way, he will not be obliged to keep his promise. In other words, he delays because his heart is still opposed to God 's will. Moses says specifically, that relief will come on the next day so that he would know the truth. Pharaoh needed to understand that God was in control, even though he ruled Egypt. Thus the god that was supposed to be the friend of Egypt turned against the Egyptians. They were to understand that these idols were no gods and Israel 's God is God.

Sadly, it is not uncommon for people to so love their sin, that they will cling to foolishness and endure a good deal of difficulty in order to hang on to it. Many sinful habits are like that. God help us not to be as foolish in our sin as Pharaoh was.

Eyes for Heaven or Hell – Obedience is the Key!

Matthew 19:16-20

Here is an account of what passed between Christ and a hopeful young gentleman that addressed himself to him upon a serious errand; he said to be a young man not only because he had great possessions, but because he was a ruler, a magistrate, a justice of peace in his country; it is probable that he had abilities beyond his years, else his youth would have debarred him from the magistracy. Now concerning this young gentleman, we are told how fair he bid for heaven and came short. (1)

How fair he bid for heaven, and how kindly and tenderly Christ treated him, in favor to good beginnings. Here is the gentleman's serious address to Jesus Christ; Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life? Not a better question could be asked, not more gravely. He comes to him upon an errand of importance, and he came not to tempt him, but sincerely desiring to be taught by him. His question is, What good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?

By this it appears,

[1.] That he had a firm belief of eternal life; he was no Sadducee. He was convinced that there is a happiness prepared for those in the other world, who are prepared for it in this world.

[2.] That he was concerned to make it sure to himself that he should live eternally, and was desirous of that life more than any of the delights of this life. It was a rare thing for one of his age and quality to appear so much in care about another world. The rich are apt to think it below them to make such an enquiry as this; and young people think it time enough yet.

[3.] That he was sensible something must be done, some good thing, for the attainment of this happiness. It is by patient continuance in well-doing that we seek for immortality. We must be doing, and doing that which is good. The blood of Christ is the only purchase of eternal life, but obedience to Christ is the appointed way to it.

[4.] That he was, or at least thought himself, willing to do what was to be done for the obtaining of this eternal life. Those that know what it is to have eternal life, and what it is to come short of it, will be glad to accept of it upon any terms. Note, while there are many that say, Who will show us any good? our great enquiry should be, What shall we do, that we may have eternal life? What shall we do, to be forever happy, happy in another world? For this world has not that in it that will make us happy. (2)

Matthew 19: 16-20. And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?
17. And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.
18. He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness,
19. Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
20. The young man saith unto him, All these things have I kept from my youth up: what lack I yet?

Poor Spiritual Leadership

Matthew 19:3-7

some Pharisees sought to test Jesus through a question: Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any and every reason? The nation was divided over this issue. Followers of Hillel felt a man could divorce his wife for almost any reason, but others, following Shammai, thought one could not divorce his wife unless she were guilty of sexual offense. Without getting involved in the Hillel-Shammai controversy Jesus reminded the religious leaders of God’s original purpose in establishing the marriage bond. God made people male and female (v. 4; Gen. 1:27). In marriage He joins them together in an inseparable bond. This bond is a higher calling than the parent-child relationship, for a man is to leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife in a one-flesh relationship (Gen. 2:24). Therefore what God has joined together, men ought not separate (choµrizetoµ; in 1 Cor. 7:10 this word means “to divorce”).

The Pharisees, realizing that Jesus was speaking of the permanence of the marital relationship, asked why Moses made a provision for divorce for people in his time (Matt. 19:7). The Lord’s answer was that Moses granted this permission because people’s hearts were hard (cf. Deut. 24:1-4). “Because your hearts were hard” is literally, “toward your hardness of heart” (skleµrokardian; from skleµros, hardness,” comes the Eng.sclerosis,” and from kardian comes the Eng.cardiac”). But that was not God’s intention for marriage. God intended husbands and wives to live together permanently. Divorce was wrong except for marital unfaithfulness (cf. Matt. 5:32). (1)

It is interesting to see how fallen humanity shifts the focus of spiritual truth. Jesus focused on the main intent and fallen humanity focused on the exception. Whenever this happens, the tendency is for the exception to become the norm while the intent is forgotten. This tendency is not just a problem with the enemies of truth or the ordinary believers, but the best spiritual leaders. Spiritual leaders need to remember that their main responsibility is to represent God; not please people. Sadly, the historical record shows most are more concerned about pleasing people.

4. And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female,
5. And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?
6. Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.
7. They say unto him, Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away?

Fiery Serpents

Numbers 21:4-9

It is interesting to note in our text that God sent this plague against the people, because they spoke against Him. Because of the lack of water, the manna and the hardship of the desert, they criticized God. The heart of sin is a rejection of God and His righteous ways and a turning to self. The serpent of sin has bitten all of humanity. When we look at our world and see all the hate and destruction, we need to remember it is because of the bite of the Serpent. Romans 6:23 … the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. All of us have been bitten and all of us will perish apart from faith in God.

In John 3:14-16 we read, … as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: 15 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. In other words, this miracle is an important picture when it comes to faith and salvation.

I like the picture here. Some try to make faith a very complex thing. It is not. It is very simple. We don't find Moses giving a deep theological lecture here. We find him giving the people hope through the symbol of a brazen serpent. Sadly, some today don't want to talk about sin. They feel offended that God would bring judgment to pass on their sin as He did with the people here. They think you can just look to the positive and not worry about sin and repentance from sin. That is not the message here. We have to understand that without the hope that is ours in Christ, we will suffer damnation. We will suffer eternal death. We will live forever. The only question is will we live with eternal life or eternal death. Thank God He is not willing that any should perish. All we need to do is look to the cross of Christ in faith and hope. Have you come to really understand your sin and its consequences? Have you ever taken hold of the hope that is in Christ? If not, why not trust Him now?

Reference verses:
Numbers 21:21:4 And they journeyed from mount Hor by the way of the Red sea, to compass the land of Edom: and the soul of the people was much discouraged because of the way.
21:5 And the people spake against God, and against Moses, Wherefore have ye brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? for there is no bread, neither is there any water; and our soul loatheth this light bread.
21:6 And the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people of Israel died.
21:7 Therefore the people came to Moses, and said, We have sinned, for we have spoken against the LORD, and against thee; pray unto the LORD, that he take away the serpents from us. And Moses prayed for the people.
21:8 And the LORD said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live.
21:9 And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived.

Another Old Testament Reference to the Trinity

Fulfilled in the New Testament

Isaiah 49:6-7

Isaiah is filled with references to the Messiah and it seems difficult to us that the Jewish scholars were so blind, but we also were blind to these great truths until the Holy Spirit revealed them to us. Isaiah 49:6-7 And He said, It is a light thing that Thou shouldest be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob. To restore the preserved of Israel: I will also give Thee for a light to the Gentiles, that Thou mayest be My salvation unto the end of the earth. Thus saith the LORD, The Redeemer of Israel, and his Holy One (Christ), to Him whom man despiseth, to Him whom the nation abhorreth, to a servant of rulers, kings shall see and arise, princes also shall worship, because of the LORD that is faithful, and the Holy One of Israel, and he shall choose thee.

Luke 2:32 A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel. This prophecy of Simeon is the fulfillment of Isaiah 49. This ancient sage was led by the Holy Spirit to tell Mary and Joseph of the ministry of our Lord Jesus and also of His crucifixion. Please take time to read the context, Luke 2:25-35.

Paul and Barnabas went on their first missionary journey to Antioch of Pisidia. Antioch had a large Jewish community and Paul went to them first with the message of the Messiah. Antioch was a city in Asia Minor in what is now known as Turkey. Acts 13:27-28 For they that dwell at Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they knew him not, nor yet the voices of the prophets which are read every Sabbath day, they have fulfilled them in condemning him. And though they found no cause of death in him, yet desired they Pilate that He should be slain.

Paul did not go to them in condemnation, rather in instruction that they might be saved. However, in Acts 13:50-51, the Jews cast Paul and Barnabas out of the city.

Years later, Paul was standing before King Agrippa and preached the same message in Acts 26:23 That Christ should suffer, and that he should be the first that should rise from the dead, and should show light unto the people (Jews), and to the Gentiles. Paul used every opportunity to share the message of salvation. Are you doing the same, or are you afraid to tell this “Wonderful Story” to all that you meet?

Who is the Greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven?

Heb 13:17-18

This writer continues to be amazed at the faith of a small child. Their thoughts are literal and absolute. Nothing is gray to them. Adults are always looking for an excuse or passing the buck to someone other then themselves. It is thought that the disciples understood that there are degrees of greatness in heaven. Our Lord did not question that, but rather taught them one of the greatest lessons found in Matthew, and that is that humility before God is before worship. In our world, there are great men and mediocre men. Some may be great because of their birth status, others because of things they have accomplished, but with God it is the humble and contrite heart that makes for greatness. As Joshua said, “as for me and my house we will serve the Lord.” This was greatness and humility all wrapped up in human flesh. It’s not the statesman, or politician, or vocation that makes a man great, it’s his relationship with God.

  • A nation is not great because it is number one as world leader, but because its people are on their knees seeking the Lord.
  • A church is not great because it paid their preacher the best salary in the community. It’s great because of its people praying for the church and its pastor.

The great preachers of yesteryear were men of great prayer. Preachers today are taxi drivers, errand runners and all around good boys to everybody. But in days of old, they were men of the book and wore trousers with patched knees. Someone was questioning a church member about the church calling a very short man, in stature, to be the pastor. The church member responded, “You may think him to be short, but when he is on his knees, he can reach the throne of grace. To us, he’s a very tall man.”

In the Book of the Acts, laymen were chosen to become deacons in order that they might relieve the Apostles of the mundane responsibilities. The Apostles were spending their limited time in prayer and the studying of the Word of God.

Please pray for our pastors several times each day, because they are standing in the breech and praying for you. Personal counseling and preparation for the pulpit are time consuming and your pastors have families, obligations and burdens of which only the Lord has knowledge. Please PRAY for them!

Heb 13:17 Obey those who rule over you, and be submissive, for they watch out for your souls, as those who must give account. Let them do so with joy and not with grief, for that would be unprofitable for you.18 ¶ Pray for us; for we are confident that we have a good conscience, in all things desiring to live honorably.

Where is “My” Place and What is “My” Position?

Matthew 18:1

As there never was a greater pattern of humility, so there never was a greater preacher of it, than Christ; he took all occasions to command it, to commend it, to his disciples and followers.

The occasion of this discourse concerning humility was an unbecoming contest among the disciples for presidency; they came to him, saying, among themselves for they were ashamed to ask him, who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven? They mean not, who by character, but who by name. They had heard much, and preached much, of the kingdom of heaven, the kingdom of the Messiah, his church in this world; but as yet they were so far from having any clear notion of it, that they dreamt of a temporal kingdom, and the external pomp and power of it. Christ had lately foretold his sufferings, and the glory that should follow, that he should rise again, from whence they expected his kingdom would commence; and now they thought it was time to put in for their places in it; it is good, in such cases, to speak early. Upon other discourses of Christ to that purport, debates of this kind arose; he spoke many words of his sufferings, but only one of his glory; yet they fasten upon that, and overlook the other; and, instead of asking how they might have strength and grace to suffer with him, they ask him, “Who shall be highest in reigning with him.” Note, many love to hear and speak of privileges and glory, who are willing to pass by the thoughts of work and trouble. They look so much at the crown, that they forget the yoke and the cross. (1)

 1. They suppose that all who have a place in that kingdom are great, for it is a kingdom of priests. Note, those are truly great who are truly good; and they will appear so at last, when Christ shall own them as his, though ever so mean and poor in the world.

2. They suppose that there are degrees in this greatness. All the saints are honorable, but not all alike so; one star differs from another star in glory.

3. They suppose it must be some of them that must be prime ministers of state. To whom should King Jesus delight to do honor, but to them who had left all for him, and were now his companions in patience and tribulation?

4. They strive who it should be, each having some pretence. The discourse itself, is a just rebuke to the question, Who shall be greatest? (2)

Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. Amen.

What Profit to gain the World and lose Your Soul?

Matthew 16:24-28

SELF-SEEKING IS SELF-LOSING. In these verses, Jesus is warning his disciples of the dangers and hardships of following him. Many are tempted to turn back because of the sacrifices and the possibility of a violent death. Self preservation is natural; the flesh does not want to suffer. The person who denies Christ for his own convenience lowers himself to the level of being worthless. When Christ returns and sets upon the throne of judgment, those who espoused Christianity for purely selfish and personal reasons will be cast into outer darkness. Remember, He knows the thoughts and intents of every heart. If we think only of our own salvation and are not concerned that others be saved, here at home and around the world, we also will give an account for our selfish attitude. Christ actually comes to save us from our selves, because by nature we are Christ haters. It is good to read verse 26 and than reread verse 25 as it gives us the understanding we need.

SELF-LOSING IS SELF-FINDING. Dedication and sacrifice are the most important part of our Christian life. Without dedication and sacrifice we are just saved, “so as by fire,” and as His servants we are worthless. Jesus was warning his disciples that persecution was imminent. Persecution is all over the world and coming to America day by day. Every time you read of students being unable to pray or wearing a T-shirt with Christian words or emblems on it you should be reminded our society is removing every symbol of God in both words and actions. We gain the only life worth living on earth when we deny ourselves and embark on a career of unselfish service. The abandonment of selfish aims is the acquisition of heavenly treasures. There is blessedness in the life of obedience and self surrender that the selfish can never know. Happiness does not come by aiming at it, but as a surprise to the one who is seeking to be busy in unselfish service to God and others. What use is a world of wealth if you are always afraid you will lose it. True happiness is not worldly accumulation of material things, but it is the joy of knowing you are serving the Lord to the best of your ability. Lay up your treasures in heaven where moth and rust do not corrupt.

Reference verses:
Matthew 16:24-28. Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
25. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.
26. For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
27. For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works.
28. Verily I say unto you, There be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom.

Just a Little Sin Leavens the Whole Lump!

Matthew 16:11

Forgive us! Amen.

God’s Supernatural Blessings

Matthew 15:33

Jesus, returning from Tyre and Sidon, went near the Sea of Galilee . . . into the hills (cf. Matt. 14:23) where He sat down. Great crowds of people brought a multitude of sick people to Him. In view of Mark 7:31-37, the crowds referred to in Matthew 15:30-31 may have been Gentiles (also cf. Mark 8:13 with Matt. 15:39). Jesus healed their physical illnesses, and people praised the God of Israel. Jesus was thus demonstrating what He will do for Gentiles as well as for Jews when His rightful millennial rule will be established on earth.

This ministry lasted about three days. Jesus had compassion for them (splanchnizomai; cf. comments on 9:36; Luke 7:13). He did not want to send them home without food. The disciples questioned how in this remote place (cf. Matt. 14:15) they could buy enough food to feed them all. When Jesus asked them about their present resources, they said they had seven bread loaves and a few small fish. The disciples must have anticipated that Jesus was going to use them again to feed this multitude, as He had done earlier (14:13-21). Jesus told the crowd to sit down, gave thanks for the seven loaves and the fish, and divided the food among the disciples, who distributed it to the people. After the crowd—estimated this time at 4,000 men, besides women and children—ate and were satisfied . . . seven basketfuls of broken pieces were picked up. This miracle demonstrated that the Lord’s blessings through His disciples would fall not only on Israel (14:13-21)but also on Gentiles. (1)

God does not mean for us to live our lives in the flesh. As we see here, there may be times when God’s direction leaves us in desperate straights. Jesus could have sent the multitude away and avoided this crisis. We can only conclude that what was going on spiritually was more important. However, as God was leading, He takes care of the needs. He does not want people to think suffering and loss is a part of attending to our spiritual life. Therefore, He takes care of the needs of these people in a supernatural way. Sadly, there are those who would like to remove the supernatural from faith. This is absurd. Without the supernatural, there is no need for faith.

Matthew 14:13-23. When Jesus heard of it, he departed thence by ship into a desert place apart: and when the people had heard thereof, they followed him on foot out of the cities.
14. And Jesus went forth, and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, and he healed their sick.
15. And when it was evening, his disciples came to him, saying, This is a desert place, and the time is now past; send the multitude away, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves victuals.
16. But Jesus said unto them, They need not depart; give ye them to eat.
17. And they say unto him, We have here but five loaves, and two fishes.
18. He said, Bring them hither to me.
19. And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the grass, and took the five loaves, and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and brake, and gave the loaves to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude.
20. And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the fragments that remained twelve baskets full.
21. And they that had eaten were about five thousand men, beside women and children.
22. And straightway Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away.
23. And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone.

Mark 7: 31-37. And again, departing from the coasts of Tyre and Sidon, he came unto the sea of Galilee, through the midst of the coasts of Decapolis.
32. And they bring unto him one that was deaf, and had an impediment in his speech; and they beseech him to put his hand upon him.
33. And he took him aside from the multitude, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spit, and touched his tongue;
34. And looking up to heaven, he sighed, and saith unto him, Ephphatha, that is, Be opened.
35. And straightway his ears were opened, and the string of his tongue was loosed, and he spake plain.
36. And he charged them that they should tell no man: but the more he charged them, so much the more a great deal they published it;
37. And were beyond measure astonished, saying, He hath done all things well: he maketh both the deaf to hear, and the dumb to speak.

Blind Leaders Leading the Blind

Matthew 15:12-17 and Jeremiah 17:9

Our Lord gives us a startling image and vividly suggests the deplorable spirituality of the Jews when He was here on earth. We must not be too critical, for that same deplorable condition exists today in the churches of America. Many cults send out missionaries are looking for gullible people who are doctrinally ignorant of the Holy Scriptures. People who are not grounded in the great doctrines of the Bible and in their lack of Bible knowledge are sucked into a false interpretation of the Scriptures. Sound Biblical doctrine is not being taught, even in the fundamental churches, and if it were the congregations are not interested in learning the deeper spiritual things. It was true two thousand years ago and again today, that spirituality is only for little children and aged women who are spending more time in their Bible because they are preparing for their finals.

The responsibility of these blind leaders is most serious, because they are going to have to give an account of their perversion when they stand before the Lord. The sad part is that so many of the blinded are thinking they are all right, and also will go into eternal punishment because they were following the philosophies of men, instead of the Spirit. If you are going to be a religious teacher, you must know the God of the Bible, and the great teachings of the Bible.

A marvelous illustration is found in John 9:1-39. It is about the man born blind and was given his sight by the Lord Jesus. When Jesus and the blind man met, the blind man did not know who made the mud packs and put them on his eyes. He had not seen his Benefactor. He did, however, obey the Lord’s command and went to the pool of Siloam and the first thing he saw was his own face reflected in the waters of the pool. It was not until much later in the day that He knew his Benefactor. When the Pharisees questioned the formerly blind man, his only answer was that “whereas I was blind, now I see. The Greek word for “see” here is “bleppo.” It is almost an exclamation point. It was a shout of jubilee and happiness. When our eyes are opened to the great Bible truths we also rejoice in the Lord.

Reference verses:
Matthew 15:12-17. Then came his disciples, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the Pharisees were offended, after they heard this saying?
13. But he answered and said, Every plant, which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up.
14. Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch.
15. Then answered Peter and said unto him, Declare unto us this parable.
16. And Jesus said, Are ye also yet without understanding?
17. Do not ye yet understand, that whatsoever entereth in at the mouth goeth into the belly, and is cast out into the draught?

Man’s Philosophy and Vain Deceit

Matthew 15:2-3

Here, is the cavil of the scribes and Pharisees at Christ's disciples, for eating with unwashen hands. The scribes and Pharisees were the great men of the Jewish church, men whose gain was godliness, great enemies to the Gospel of Christ, but coloring their opposition with pretence of zeal for the law of Moses, when really nothing was intended, but the support of their own tyranny over the consciences of men. They were men of learning and men of business. These scribes and Pharisees here introduced were of Jerusalem, the holy city, the head city, whither the tribes went up, and where were set the thrones of judgment; they should therefore have been better than others, but they were worse. Note, external privileges, if they be not duly improved, commonly swell men up the more with pride and malignity. Jerusalem, which should have been a pure spring, was now become a poisoned sink. How the faithful city is become a harlot! (1)

The charge in general is, you transgress the commandment of God by your tradition. They called it the tradition of the elders, laying stress upon the antiquity of the usage, and the authority of them that imposed it, as the church of Rome does upon fathers and councils; but Christ calls it their tradition. Note, illegal impositions will be laid to the charge of those who support and maintain them, and keep them up, as well of those who first invented and enjoined them. You transgress the commandment of God. Note, those who are most zealous of their own impositions, are commonly most careless of God's commands; which is a good reason why Christ's disciples should stand upon their guard against such impositions, lest, though at first they seem only to infringe the liberty of Christians, they come at length to confront the authority of Christ. Though the Pharisees, in this command of washing before meat, did not entrench upon any command of God; yet, because in other instances they did, he justifies his disciples' disobedience to this.(2) Col 2:8  Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. Gracious Savior, forgive us when we exalt our opinions above Your Holy Word. Help us not to be stuck in our traditions, but to be led in Your ways by Your Holy Spirit. Amen.

(1,2) Matthew Henry Commentary

Reference verses:
Matthew 15: 2-3. Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread.
3. But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition?

Walking on Water

Matthew 14:31

Jesus sent the disciples away in a boat. After dismissing the crowd . . . He went up into the hills alone to pray (cf. John 6:15). Sending the disciples into the boat did two things: it got them away from the crowd, and it gave them opportunity to ponder the significance of what had just happened through them. But soon they were in a storm. Somewhere between 3 and 6 in the morning (the fourth watch of the night), Jesus joined them, walking on the lake to their boat—a distance of “three or three and a half miles” (John 6:19). His power over the elements was obvious, but there was also a lesson in faith for the disciples in this experience. Their fear of seeing a ghost (Matt. 14:26) was relieved when Jesus announced that it was He.

But Peter wanted greater assurance that it was really the Lord. He said, Lord, if it’s You . . . tell me to come to You on the water. The Lord’s reply was a simple Come. Peter’s initial response demonstrated his faith for he stepped out of the boat and began walking toward the Lord. (Only Matthew recorded Peter’s walk on the water.) In all recorded history only two men ever walked on . . . water, Jesus and Peter. But Peter’s faith was challenged when he saw the wind, that is, when he saw its effect on the water. As he sank, he cried to the Lord for help. Immediately the Lord caught him. Jesus rebuked Peter for his lack of faith (cf. 6:30; 8:26; 16:8), which had caused him to sink. (1)

There are special blessings reserved for those who are willing to seek and trust God. Here, Peter is able to walk on water. In the book of James, we read that we have not because we ask not. As with most achievements in life, they have to be believed before they can be achieved. More often than not, the best believers limit God’s work on this earth through unbelief. Sadly, as we look at Peter here his faith could not hold up with the wind and the waves. As we seek the blessings of faith, the enemy will send the wind and the waves to challenge the strength of our faith. We need to remember as we sink, we cannot fail, we can only quit.

God Desires Mercy Rather Than Sacrifice

Matthew 12:5-12

The Jewish teachers had corrupted many of the commandments, by interpreting them more loosely than they were intended; a mistake which Christ discovered and rectified in his sermon on the mount: but concerning the fourth commandment, they had erred in the other extreme, and interpreted it too strictly. Note, it is common for men of corrupt minds, by their zeal in rituals, and the external services of religion, to think to atone for the looseness of their morals. But they are cursed who add to, as well as, they who take from the words of this book(

It is no new thing for the most harmless and innocent actions of Christ's disciples to be evil spoken of, and reflected upon as unlawful, especially by those who are zealous for their own inventions and impositions. The Pharisees complained of them to their Master for doing that which it was not lawful to do. Note, those are no friends to Christ and his disciples, who make that to be unlawful which God has not made to be so. (1)

  • First, ignorance is the cause of our rash and uncharitable censures of our brethren.
  • Secondly, it is not enough for us to know the Scriptures, but we must labor to know the meaning of them. Let him that readeth understand.
  • Thirdly, ignorance of the meaning of the Scripture is especially shameful in those who take upon them to teach others. (2)

Christ having thus silenced the Pharisees, and got clear of them, departed, and went into their synagogue, the synagogue of these Pharisees, in which they presided, and toward which he was going, when they picked this quarrel with him. Note:

  • First, we must take heed lest any thing that occurs in our way to holy ordinances unfit us for, or divert us from our due attendance on them. Let us proceed in the way of our duty, notwithstanding the artifices of Satan, who endeavors, by the perverse disputing of men of corrupt minds, and many other ways, to ruffle and discompose us.
  • Secondly, we must not, for the sake of private feuds and personal piques, draw back from public worship. Though the Pharisees had thus maliciously caviled at Christ, yet he went into their synagogue. Satan gains this point, if, by sowing discord among brethren, he prevail to drive them, or any of them, from the synagogue, and the communion of the faithful. (3) Turn ye at my reproof, and I will pour out my Spirit, Pr. 1:23.

Matthew 12: 5-12. Or have ye not read in the law, how that on the sabbath days the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are blameless?
6. But I say unto you, That in this place is one greater than the temple.
7. But if ye had known what this meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice, ye would not have condemned the guiltless.
8. For the Son of man is Lord even of the sabbath day.
9. And when he was departed thence, he went into their synagogue:
10. And, behold, there was a man which had his hand withered. And they asked him, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath days? that they might accuse him.
11. And he said unto them, What man shall there be among you, that shall have one sheep, and if it fall into a pit on the sabbath day, will he not lay hold on it, and lift it out?
12. How much then is a man better than a sheep? Wherefore it is lawful to do well on the sabbath days.

All Faithful Christians will be Persecuted

Matt. 10:25-28

23But when they persecute you in this city, flee ye into another: for verily I say unto you, Ye shall not have gone over the cities of Israel, till the Son of man be come. 24The disciple is not above his master, nor the servant above his lord. 25It is enough for the disciple that he be as his master, and the servant as his lord. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more shall they call them of his household? The enemies of our Lord were calling Him Beelzebub or Satan. It is no wonder that our enemies in the Iraq, Israel and other mid-east nations are calling America, “The Great Satan.” Beelzebub was another name for the devil and also the name of an Egyptian god known to be the “lord of the flies in Egypt.” Remember one of the plagues was flies in the house, in the bread dough, all over the children, and there was no way to get rid of them except that Pharaoh ask Moses to remove them. 27What I tell you in darkness, that speak ye in light: and what ye hear in the ear, that preach ye upon the housetops, Christ was speaking to His disciples and giving them instructions as how to preach. “Cry Out!” Don’t be afraid to speak up for the Lord, after all He has done for you, how can you keep quiet? 28And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell, 2 Cor. 5:6-7. Persecution and opposition are coming to the church in America just as sure as the sun comes up tomorrow.

Recently, in North Africa, a Christian, teenage slave boy was crucified by his Islamic master for going to church and he died for his Lord. It is believed by most fundamentals that here in America, Christians will be martyred for this faith. We are not to be afraid, if we are really born again. We may be put to death in the flesh, but we shall be alive in the presence of the Lord forever. Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord: 7(For we walk by faith, not by sight:) 8We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord, 2 Cor. 5:6-8. Paul had the right attitude; we need to think as he thought to be victorious.
