This
month's memory verses:
Micah 6: 6-8 Wherewith
shall I come before the LORD, and bow myself before the high
God? shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves
of a year old?
[7] Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, or with
ten thousands of rivers of oil? shall I give my firstborn
for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of
my soul?
[8] He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth
the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy,
and to walk humbly with thy God?

Zephaniah, a Prophet
of Doom
Zephaniah 1:1-6
The
meaning of Zephaniah's name is "One whom Jehovah hides." With little
introduction, we learn that the Prophet was from Royal blood according
to verse 1. Zephaniah was a contemporary of Jeremiah, Ezekiel and Daniel.
In
verses 2-6, the Prophet informs us that, man and beast, fowls and fish
will be consumed. In other words, the judgment of Jehovah was about to
fall upon idolatrous Israel and Judah. God considers "idolatry" as spiritual
adultery. Why, because the Jewish nation was the wife of Jehovah. For
thy Maker is thine husband; the LORD of hosts is his name; and thy Redeemer
the Holy One of Israel; The God of the whole earth shall he be called,
Isaiah 54:5. Israel was referred to as the wife of Jehovah, and the church
is called the Bride of the Lamb, Revelation 21:9. There are some who don't
accept the Church as the Bride of Christ, but this writer sees the Church
as the "Bride of Christ!"
It
seems that verses 7-18 refer to two separate events. The first is the
imminent destruction of Israel and Judah in the seventy years of captivity.
The Land must have her sabbatical rest. The destruction of the Temple
and the city of Jerusalem is foremost in this chapter. The second event
will be fulfilled in the Great Tribulation. The Double Reference
Principle is to an event in the near future and another event in
the remote future. In verses 11-13, there is a word that needs qualification,
"Maktesh". According to The International Standard Bible Encyclopedia
the word refers to the Tyropoeon Valley. This valley seems to have been
the place where most of the merchandising or selling of manufactured products
were bought and sold. This was the business section of the city.
Lastly,
we read of the "Great Day of the Lord." This refers to great destruction.
Neither wealth nor prestige will protect, because all people will come
under divine judgment. The extent of the judgment described in verses
14-18. Woe to any people who find themselves under the judgment of Almighty
God. The entire unsaved world is in for a greater judgment in the near
future, the Tribulation.
Zeph.1
[1] The word of the LORD which came unto Zephaniah the son of Cushi, the
son of Gedaliah, the son of Amariah, the son of Hizkiah, in the days of
Josiah the son of Amon, king of Judah.
[2] I will utterly consume all things from off the land, saith the LORD.
[3] I will consume man and beast; I will consume the fowls of the heaven,
and the fishes of the sea, and the stumblingblocks with the wicked; and
I will cut off man from off the land, saith the LORD.
[4] I will also stretch out mine hand upon Judah, and upon all the inhabitants
of Jerusalem; and I will cut off the remnant of Baal from this place,
and the name of the Chemarims with the priests;
[5] And them that worship the host of heaven upon the housetops; and them
that worship and that swear by the LORD, and that swear by Malcham;
[6] And them that are turned back from the LORD; and those that have not
sought the LORD, nor inquired for him.

Responding to Judgment
Zephaniah Chapter 2
In this chapter,
we read about God's judgment and the various responses of people. First,
God's people are called on to repent. Repentance is the best way to
find mercy. God delights in mercy, but always extends mercy according
to a good purpose. In Proverbs 28:13 we read, He that covereth
his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them
shall have mercy. God's main purpose is goodness. As
long as mercy fits that purpose, it is freely given. When we repent,
it opens the door to God's mercy.
In
this chapter, the righteous are encouraged to seek God, goodness, and
humility. In this way, they will be hidden from the force of judgment.
God is able to shelter and protect His people when trouble comes on
this earth. In Psalm 91:7, we read about destructive judgment. We read
a thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right
hand; but it shall not come nigh thee. This is the experience
of the righteous in times of terrible trouble.
When
trouble comes, it not only hits Israel, but many nations surrounding
Israel. Some of these nations rejoice as God's people are hit. The
sin of Moab and Ammon was their pride (cf. Isa. 16:6; Jer. 48:29),
evidenced by their insulting and mocking of God's people (cf.
Zeph. 2:8; Ezek. 25:5-6, 8).
(1)
In this chapter, we read of God's dealing with Philistia v. 4-7, Moab
and Ammon v. 8-11 and Assyria v. 13-15. An attack on the outer wall,
begun in 614 b.c. by the Medes and Babylonians, was initially withstood
by the Ninevites, but a combination of trickery by the attackers, carelessness
by the attacked, and a natural disaster, finally brought victory to
the attackers (cf. Nahum 1:10; 2:3-5; 3:11). The great
inner wall collapsed because of an unexpected deluge that swelled the
Tigris River in a normally dry season of the year and inundated the
wall. Thus, the city was unexpectedly defeated (cf. Nahum 1:8;
2:6-8; 3:12).
(2)
God has a way of injecting Himself in life. We are very wise to maintain
a spiritual and godly focus throughout life. We dare not rejoice as
others reap the fruit of sin, nor give way to the prevailing morality
of the day. I wonder today, what about your heart? Do you feel a need
for mercy?

Zeph.2
[1] Gather yourselves together, yea, gather together, O nation not desired;
[2] Before the decree bring forth, before the day pass as the chaff,
before the fierce anger of the LORD come upon you, before the day of
the LORD's anger come upon you.
[3] Seek ye the LORD, all ye meek of the earth, which have wrought his
judgment; seek righteousness, seek meekness: it may be ye shall be hid
in the day of the LORD's anger.
[4] For Gaza shall be forsaken, and Ashkelon a desolation: they shall
drive out Ashdod at the noon day, and Ekron shall be rooted up.
[5] Woe unto the inhabitants of the sea coast, the nation of the Cherethites!
the word of the LORD is against you; O Canaan, the land of the Philistines,
I will even destroy thee, that there shall be no inhabitant.
[6] And the sea coast shall be dwellings and cottages for shepherds,
and folds for flocks.
[7] And the coast shall be for the remnant of the house of Judah; they
shall feed thereupon: in the houses of Ashkelon shall they lie down
in the evening: for the LORD their God shall visit them, and turn away
their captivity.
[8] I have heard the reproach of Moab, and the revilings of the children
of Ammon, whereby they have reproached my people, and magnified themselves
against their border.
[9] Therefore as I live, saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel,
Surely Moab shall be as Sodom, and the children of Ammon as Gomorrah,
even the breeding of nettles, and saltpits, and a perpetual desolation:
the residue of my people shall spoil them, and the remnant of my people
shall possess them.
[10] This shall they have for their pride, because they have reproached
and magnified themselves against the people of the LORD of hosts.
[11] The LORD will be terrible unto them: for he will famish all the
gods of the earth; and men shall worship him, every one from his place,
even all the isles of the heathen.
[12] Ye Ethiopians also, ye shall be slain by my sword.
[13] And he will stretch out his hand against the north, and destroy
Assyria; and will make Nineveh a desolation, and dry like a wilderness.
[14] And flocks shall lie down in the midst of her, all the beasts of
the nations: both the cormorant and the bittern shall lodge in the upper
lintels of it; their voice shall sing in the windows; desolation shall
be in the thresholds: for he shall uncover the cedar work.
[15] This is the rejoicing city that dwelt carelessly, that said in
her heart, I am, and there is none beside me: how is she become a desolation,
a place for beasts to lie down in! every one that passeth by her shall
hiss, and wag his hand.

Rejecting
God's Correction Leads to Destruction
Zephaniah
3
We live in
a day and age when it looks much like the time spoken of in Zephaniah
chapter 3. Many people, professing to be good "Christians" are going
away from God's Holy Word, and are instead following their own ways
and opinions and are going directly against what God desires. In fact,
in vs. 2 of our text, the people in Jerusalem were soon going to learn
that to reject God's correction leads to destruction, even though the
Lord had taken up residence in that city and was readily and easily
accessible. Just as we see today in churches and people across our nation
and in the world, the people in Jerusalem also refused to draw near
to God in acceptable worship of Him.
It
is amazing how leadership plays such an important roll in how others
respond to God. There are four classes of leadership mentioned in vs.
3-5, who were condemned for their ungodly unfaithfulness to the Lord.
These were
#1.
The Princes, who could be likened to our governors and presidents;
#2.
The Judges, who are very much, like our judicial courts today. Both
of these were like ravenous wolves looking for their prey.
#3.
Then there were the spiritual leaders, the prophets, and
#4.
The priests, who are likened to today's pastors and church and family
leaders. These people were disobedient and unfaithful to the Lord. Sound
like anything we are seeing today?!
The
Lord clearly warns the people that to continue to disobey would lead
to desolation and destruction, but they continued in their fruits of
corruption, rising early to zealously and deliberately pursue the ways
of sin. Then, Zephaniah begins to give us a picture of the future, as
he speaks of the Great Tribulation in vs. 8. Folks, if there is anything
that needs to be paid attention to, it is this admonition from God's
Word that we need to repent of our sin! Our nation, as never before,
is caught in the throws of apostasy and complacency. As one dear friend
puts it, this nation is caught in Icobodian (The Glory of the Lord has
departed) Laodicianism. (Apathy, Luke Warmness). Clearly, if folks do
not repent, they will face the judgments of the Lord upon disobedience.
God desires Repentance, God desires Submission, and God desires Obedience.
As you examine your life today, where do you stand before the Creator?!
It is best to repent, submit, and obey, and not go your own way!

Zeph.3
[1] Woe to her that is filthy and polluted, to the oppressing city!
[2] She obeyed not the voice; she received not correction; she trusted
not in the LORD; she drew not near to her God.
[3] Her princes within her are roaring lions; her judges are evening
wolves; they gnaw not the bones till the morrow.
[4] Her prophets are light and treacherous persons: her priests have
polluted the sanctuary, they have done violence to the law.
[5] The just LORD is in the midst thereof; he will not do iniquity:
every morning doth he bring his judgment to light, he faileth not; but
the unjust knoweth no shame.
[6] I have cut off the nations: their towers are desolate; I made their
streets waste, that none passeth by: their cities are destroyed, so
that there is no man, that there is none inhabitant.
[7] I said, Surely thou wilt fear me, thou wilt receive instruction;
so their dwelling should not be cut off, howsoever I punished them:
but they rose early, and corrupted all their doings.
[8] Therefore wait ye upon me, saith the LORD, until the day that I
rise up to the prey: for my determination is to gather the nations,
that I may assemble the kingdoms, to pour upon them mine indignation,
even all my fierce anger: for all the earth shall be devoured with the
fire of my jealousy.
[9] For then will I turn to the people a pure language, that they may
all call upon the name of the LORD, to serve him with one consent.
[10] From beyond the rivers of Ethiopia my suppliants, even the daughter
of my dispersed, shall bring mine offering.
[11] In that day shalt thou not be ashamed for all thy doings, wherein
thou hast transgressed against me: for then I will take away out of
the midst of thee them that rejoice in thy pride, and thou shalt no
more be haughty because of my holy mountain.
[12] I will also leave in the midst of thee an afflicted and poor people,
and they shall trust in the name of the LORD.
[13] The remnant of Israel shall not do iniquity, nor speak lies; neither
shall a deceitful tongue be found in their mouth: for they shall feed
and lie down, and none shall make them afraid.
[14] Sing, O daughter of Zion; shout, O Israel; be glad and rejoice
with all the heart, O daughter of Jerusalem.
[15] The LORD hath taken away thy judgments, he hath cast out thine
enemy: the king of Israel, even the LORD, is in the midst of thee: thou
shalt not see evil any more.
[16] In that day it shall be said to Jerusalem, Fear thou not: and to
Zion, Let not thine hands be slack.
[17] The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save,
he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will
joy over thee with singing.
[18] I will gather them that are sorrowful for the solemn assembly,
who are of thee, to whom the reproach of it was a burden.
[19] Behold, at that time I will undo all that afflict thee: and I will
save her that halteth, and gather her that was driven out; and I will
get them praise and fame in every land where they have been put to shame.
[20] At that time will I bring you again, even in the time that I gather
you: for I will make you a name and a praise among all people of the
earth, when I turn back your captivity before your eyes, saith the LORD.

It is God's Prerogative
to Love or to Hate
Malachi 1:
14
The mystery of Divine Election is presented
in the first 5 verses. Some have sought to water down the words of the
Lord "I loved Jacob and I hated Esau," by translating them: "I have preferred
Jacob over Esau" or "I have loved Esau less than
Jacob." But the words used in Malachi are also quoted by the Apostle Paul
in Romans 9:13, where Paul is illustrating election. If God determines
to send rain on one parcel of ground and not on another that is God's
choice and we have nothing to say about it. God hardens on the same conditions
as showing mercy. If men will accept mercy, God will give it to them,
if they will not, thus hardening themselves; He is only just and righteous
in judging them. The same sun melts wax and hardens clay. Remembering
that we are clay or dirt, God's word either melts our hearts, with our
permission, or hardens the heart because of unbelief. Man is able to make
choices, he is not a robot. God made us that way because He wanted us
to love Him by our being willing to accept Him. He does not force His
will on us, but shows us the way and either we follow, or we rebel; that's
up to us.
In verses 12-14 of this first chapter, we read of the
hypocrisy of bringing an offering to God that is not perfect. When we
pay all our bills and then tithe on what is left, we have stolen from
God and brought Him an imperfect offering just as the Jews were bringing
lame and sick offerings to Him in days of old. The Lord knows what your
income is, He knows what your tithe is and if you are being deceitful
with your giving, God has every right to collect the tithe in other ways.
He may cut your salary or you my lose your job. He may bring on sickness
or cause unforeseen expenses to collect His tithe. Remember God keeps
books, and our rewards when we get to heaven are going to be listed according
to the works we have done, be they good or bad, I Cor. 3:12-18.
We cannot rob God! He always balances the accounts. He
does not need an auditor, His books are always accurate. If, and when,
we think we can fool God, we are only fooling ourselves and we end up
the loser. Try tithing as God leads, without deceit, you'll like it! It
will be the greatest blessing you have received since you were born again!
Malachi 1:14 But cursed be the deceiver, which hath in his flock a male,
and voweth, and sacrificeth unto the LORD a corrupt thing: for I am a
great King, saith the LORD of hosts, and my name is dreadful among the
heathen.
I Corinthians 12: 1-18 Now if any man build upon this foundation gold,
silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble;
[13] Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare
it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every
man's work of what sort it is.
[14] If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive
a reward.
[15] If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself
shall be saved; yet so as by fire.
[16] Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of
God dwelleth in you?
[17] If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the
temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.
[18] Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise
in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise.

Corrupt Spiritual Leadership
Malachi
2
This
chapter calls attention to the lack of faithfulness of the priests to
spiritual truth, as well as, their own family relationships. This chapter
begins with a warning to the priests and a call for them to honor God.
I like this. God does not desire to curse these spiritual leaders, He
desires to bless them. Therefore, in spite of their failure, He calls
on them to repent. In part, I believe this is for the good of the people
rather than just for their good.
Sadly,
these leaders were using their offices for personal advantage and gain.
These leaders put service to God secondary to their own needs. Yet in
the end, they would find this destructive to their interests. God would
make it so. Though the people and the priests were unfaithful, they
made every outward show of faithfulness. There problem was a problem
of the heart and this heart problem had an impact on the family. It
is significant to note that God says clearly that He hates divorce.
Fallen humanity does not. By guarding their spirits they would be
acting in accord with God's purpose and would help preserve the unity
of the nation as well as their individual marriages. (1)
It
would seem clear from this discussion that our heart has a tremendous
impact on our relationship with God and the family. If we give way to
sin and self, we will not be careful when it comes to the honor of God
or the sanctity of the marriage relationship. There are deep spiritual
implications in the family relationship. When God's people intermarried
with pagans, they ignored the spiritual foundation of the home. They
put the physical and the emotional above the spiritual. It would be
impossible for such a spirit to follow a spiritual path. Without a heart
for God and particularly their children, the health and unity of the
nation itself was at risk. The leaders should have stood against this
corruption. Indeed some did. However, the sons of Levi, as a whole,
gave way to the same corruption that dominated the hearts of the people.
It is important that we attend to spiritual things. We need to keep
our hearts focused on God and others. We dare not give way to self and
sin. Sadly, I believe with all my heart, most of God's people are giving
way to self and sin today.

Mal.2
[1] And now, O ye priests, this commandment is for you.
[2] If ye will not hear, and if ye will not lay it to heart, to give
glory unto my name, saith the LORD of hosts, I will even send a curse
upon you, and I will curse your blessings: yea, I have cursed them
already, because ye do not lay it to heart.
[3] Behold, I will corrupt your seed, and spread dung upon your faces,
even the dung of your solemn feasts; and one shall take you away with
it.
[4] And ye shall know that I have sent this commandment unto you,
that my covenant might be with Levi, saith the LORD of hosts.
[5] My covenant was with him of life and peace; and I gave them to
him for the fear wherewith he feared me, and was afraid before my
name.
[6] The law of truth was in his mouth, and iniquity was not found
in his lips: he walked with me in peace and equity, and did turn many
away from iniquity.
[7] For the priest's lips should keep knowledge, and they should seek
the law at his mouth: for he is the messenger of the LORD of hosts.
[8] But ye are departed out of the way; ye have caused many to stumble
at the law; ye have corrupted the covenant of Levi, saith the LORD
of hosts.
[9] Therefore have I also made you contemptible and base before all
the people, according as ye have not kept my ways, but have been partial
in the law.
[10] Have we not all one father? hath not one God created us? why
do we deal treacherously every man against his brother, by profaning
the covenant of our fathers?
[11] Judah hath dealt treacherously, and an abomination is committed
in Israel and in Jerusalem; for Judah hath profaned the holiness of
the LORD which he loved, and hath married the daughter of a strange
god.
[12] The LORD will cut off the man that doeth this, the master and
the scholar, out of the tabernacles of Jacob, and him that offereth
an offering unto the LORD of hosts.
[13] And this have ye done again, covering the altar of the LORD with
tears, with weeping, and with crying out, insomuch that he regardeth
not the offering any more, or receiveth it with good will at your
hand.
[14] Yet ye say, Wherefore? Because the LORD hath been witness between
thee and the wife of thy youth, against whom thou hast dealt treacherously:
yet is she thy companion, and the wife of thy covenant.
[15] And did not he make one? Yet had he the residue of the spirit.
And wherefore one? That he might seek a godly seed. Therefore take
heed to your spirit, and let none deal treacherously against the wife
of his youth.
[16] For the LORD, the God of Israel, saith that he hateth putting
away: for one covereth violence with his garment, saith the LORD of
hosts: therefore take heed to your spirit, that ye deal not treacherously.
[17] Ye have wearied the LORD with your words. Yet ye say, Wherein
have we wearied him? When ye say, Every one that doeth evil is good
in the sight of the LORD, and he delighteth in them; or, Where is
the God of judgment?

Ungodly Worship, Robbery,
and Complaint
Malachi 3
Are
you ready for the Lord to return? Apparently, even after being in captivity
for years, a lot of the folks during Malachi's time were still apathetic
and lukewarm towards the Lord. They knew what God wanted concerning acceptable
worship and yet they did not have hearts to obey. They knew what God desired
from their service and their monetary means, but they would not give God
the first fruits that were His. Then, when confronted with their sin,
they even had the audacity to complain against God and His divine and
righteous judgments against them.
Before
we get too judgmental against these folks in Malachi, we need to take
a closer look at where we stand. Do we worship God acceptably? Most people
would answer yes, but they answer from their own sinful opinions rather
than knowing biblically what acceptable worship really is. The Apostle
Paul says, Rom 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by
the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy,
acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
How many times have you really offered your body as a living sacrifice
to God during this last week? A living sacrifice is doing what God desires
and it starts with repentance. God desires that all would repent. God
would that none should perish. God really is a God of love! It is sinful
and stubborn hearted people that choose to go against God's ways. If God
is truly a God of love, He must also punish sin! He is absolutely righteous
and He alone is able to bring perfect justice to those who choose to go
against His will for their lives. Do you rob God by not giving Him the
very best of your life and the very first of your increase monetarily?
Sadly, this applies to most professing Christians. Even sadder is the
fact that when most folks are confronted with their sin, they continue
to rebel and reject God's admonition and God's messengers and they complain
and will not turn from their wicked ways. God says,
Eze 18:31 "Cast away from you all your transgressions
which you have committed and make yourselves a new heart and a new spirit!
For why will you die? For I have no pleasure in the death of anyone who
dies," declares the Lord GOD. "Therefore, repent and live." Yes,
there were a few who did turn and obey God. Are you too, one that will
choose Godliness in the Beauty of Holiness, to be a living sacrifice for
Him?!
Mal.3
[1] Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before
me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to this temple, even
the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come,
saith the LORD of hosts.
[2] But who may abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when
he appeareth? for he is like a refiner's fire, and like fullers' soap:
[3] And he shall sit as a refiner and purifer of silver: and he shall
purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they
may offer unto the LORD an offering in righteousness.
[4] Then shall the offering of Judah and Jerusalem be pleasant unto the
LORD, as in the days of old, and as in former years.
[5] And I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness
against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against false swearers,
and against those that oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and
the fatherless, and that turn aside the stranger from his right, and fear
not me, saith the LORD of hosts.
[6] For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not
consumed.
[7] Even from the days of your fathers ye are gone away from mine ordinances,
and have not kept them. Return unto me, and I will return unto you, saith
the LORD of hosts. But ye said, Wherein shall we return?
[8] Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have
we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings.
[9] Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole
nation.
[10] Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat
in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if
I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing,
that there shall not be room enough to receive it.
[11] And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy
the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before
the time in the field, saith the LORD of hosts.
[12] And all nations shall call you blessed: for ye shall be a delightsome
land, saith the LORD of hosts.
[13] Your words have been stout against me, saith the LORD. Yet ye say,
What have we spoken so much against thee?
[14] Ye have said, It is vain to serve God: and what profit is it that
we have kept his ordinance, and that we have walked mournfully before
the LORD of hosts?
[15] And now we call the proud happy; yea, they that work wickedness are
set up; yea, they that tempt God are even delivered.
[16] Then they that feared the LORD spake often one to another: and the
LORD hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before
him for them that feared the LORD, and that thought upon his name.
[17] And they shall be mine, saith the LORD of hosts, in that day when
I make up my jewels; and I will spare them, as a man spareth his own son
that serveth him.
[18] Then shall ye return, and discern between the righteous and the wicked,
between him that serveth God and him that serveth him not.

According to Malachi 4, Moses and Elijah
would be Prominent
in both the First and Second Advents
Malachi 4
Malachi is one of the three exilic Prophets.
This is the last chapter of the Old Testament. It is short and to the
point and opens to us two great events in the New Testament. The Bible
is consistent in that it has one message; our salvation and Who would
make it possible. Between the O. T. and the N. T. is a period of silence.
Sometimes called the "tunnel period" when there were no prophets and the
voice of God was not heard. It is a time of transition during which the
Jews were under Grecian culture. Malachi tells of two great events:
1. The Messiah's First Coming and rejection.
John the Baptist is mentioned, [not by the name of John], but as a man
like unto Elijah. John was a man who preached repentance and the putting
away of sin. John was a "Hell-fire and brimstone" preacher. Even the Pharisees
came to hear his message, but in their self-righteous attitudes, did not
respond. John called them a "generation of vipers," Matthew 3:7. Malachi
refers to Elijah and Moses, sent from heaven to the Mount of Transfiguration
to witness to Christ's followers that He was the true Messiah.
2. The two witness in
the last half of the Tribulation, three and one half years. In Revelation
11:3-12, we have two men who come from heaven to witness against the
Antichrist and False Prophet. According to Revelation 11:3, these two
witnesses will witness against the "Unholy Trinity" for 1260 days. Commentators
are divided as to whom they are; some say Enoch and Elijah because neither
of them died. Others think it is Moses and Elijah. This writer is inclined
to think the latter, because of verse six. One has the power to call
down fire from heaven and the other to turn the waters into blood. Both
Moses and Elijah are identified with these miracles in the Old Testament,
and they were the ones to minister to Christ at His transfiguration.
Death cannot touch these two witnesses until God determines it. They
will be killed and people will rejoice with gifts and happiness until
these men suddenly return to life, after three days lying in the hot,
Jerusalem sun, and are caught up into heaven.
Mal.4
[1] For, behold, the day cometh, that shall burn as an oven; and all
the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly, shall be stubble: and the
day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the LORD of hosts, that it
shall leave them neither root nor branch.
[2] But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise
with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves
of the stall.
[3] And ye shall tread down the wicked; for they shall be ashes under
the soles of your feet in the day that I shall do this, saith the LORD
of hosts.
[4] Remember ye the law of Moses my servant, which I commanded unto
him in Horeb for all Israel, with the statutes and judgments.
[5] Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of
the great and dreadful day of the LORD:
[6] And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and
the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the
earth with a curse.

The Backslider in Heart
Isaiah 1
The picture we
have in this chapter is one of God's people giving way to evil and being
unresponsive to God's chastisement. For the child of God today, this is
a sin unto death. Such sin is insanity. In Isaiah 1:18, we read
God's plea for sanity. God pleads with the people to, come now,
and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet,
they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they
shall be as wool. God does not want to hurt and destroy,
He wants to bless and heal.
There comes a point
where the chastening hand of God will not move the backslider in heart.
Some have suggested that the book has two themes, one for chapters
1-39 and another for chapters 40-66. Judgment seems to be the emphasis
in the first part, and salvation and comfort are prominent in the second.
Just as God is able to save all who come to Him. Israel cannot end its
history on this earth in failure. She comes to total failure and God puts
her away, but in the end she will be fully restored. In the end, God's
great grace is irresistible.
When people
give way to evil, they do not necessarily abandon the outward forms of
truth. In chapter one, God presents his case against the nation. In short,
Isaiah 1:4 covers the problem. We read, " sinful nation, a people
laden with iniquity, a seed of evildoers, children that are corrupters:
they have forsaken the LORD, they have provoked the Holy One of Israel
unto anger, they are gone away backward. However, note the faithfulness
in worship. Isaiah 1:11-15 To what purpose is the multitude of
your sacrifices unto me? saith the LORD: I am full of the burnt offerings
of rams ... Bring no more vain oblations; incense is an abomination unto
me; the new moons and sabbaths, the calling of assemblies, I cannot away
with; it is iniquity ...your appointed feasts my soul hateth: they are
a trouble unto me; I am weary to bear them. ... I will not hear:
your hands are full of blood. They were as most who profess faith
today, very religious and very corrupt. The nation as a whole did not
heed this call to repentance, and I don't think the church will today
either. But as we see here, the message must still go forth.

Isa.1
[1] The vision of Isaiah the son of Amoz, which he saw concerning Judah
and Jerusalem in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings
of Judah.
[2] Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth: for the LORD hath spoken,
I have nourished and brought up children, and they have rebelled against
me.
[3] The ox knoweth his owner, and the ass his master's crib: but Israel
doth not know, my people doth not consider.
[4] Ah sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, a seed of evildoers,
children that are corrupters: they have forsaken the LORD, they have provoked
the Holy One of Israel unto anger, they are gone away backward.
[5] Why should ye be stricken any more? ye will revolt more and more:
the whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint.
[6] From the sole of the foot even unto the head there is no soundness
in it; but wounds, and bruises, and putrifying sores: they have not been
closed, neither bound up, neither mollified with ointment.
[7] Your country is desolate, your cities are burned with fire: your land,
strangers devour it in your presence, and it is desolate, as overthrown
by strangers.
[8] And the daughter of Zion is left as a cottage in a vineyard, as a
lodge in a garden of cucumbers, as a besieged city.
[9] Except the LORD of hosts had left unto us a very small remnant, we
should have been as Sodom, and we should have been like unto Gomorrah.
[10] Hear the word of the LORD, ye rulers of Sodom; give ear unto the
law of our God, ye people of Gomorrah.
[11] To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices unto me? saith
the LORD: I am full of the burnt offerings of rams, and the fat of fed
beasts; and I delight not in the blood of bullocks, or of lambs, or of
he goats.
[12] When ye come to appear before me, who hath required this at your
hand, to tread my courts?
[13] Bring no more vain oblations; incense is an abomination unto me;
the new moons and sabbaths, the calling of assemblies, I cannot away with;
it is iniquity, even the solemn meeting.
[14] Your new moons and your appointed feasts my soul hateth: they are
a trouble unto me; I am weary to bear them.
[15] And when ye spread forth your hands, I will hide mine eyes from you:
yea, when ye make many prayers, I will not hear: your hands are full of
blood.
[16] Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before
mine eyes; cease to do evil;
[17] Learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the
fatherless, plead for the widow.
[18] Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your
sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red
like crimson, they shall be as wool.
[19] If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land:
[20] But if ye refuse and rebel, ye shall be devoured with the sword:
for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.
[21] How is the faithful city become an harlot! it was full of judgment;
righteousness lodged in it; but now murderers.
[22] Thy silver is become dross, thy wine mixed with water:
[23] Thy princes are rebellious, and companions of thieves: every one
loveth gifts, and followeth after rewards: they judge not the fatherless,
neither doth the cause of the widow come unto them.
[24] Therefore saith the Lord, the LORD of hosts, the mighty One of Israel,
Ah, I will ease me of mine adversaries, and avenge me of mine enemies:
[25] And I will turn my hand upon thee, and purely purge away thy dross,
and take away all thy tin:
[26] And I will restore thy judges as at the first, and thy counsellers
as at the beginning: afterward thou shalt be called, The city of righteousness,
the faithful city.
[27] Zion shall be redeemed with judgment, and her converts with righteousness.
[28] And the destruction of the transgressors and of the sinners shall
be together, and they that forsake the LORD shall be consumed.
[29] For they shall be ashamed of the oaks which ye have desired, and
ye shall be confounded for the gardens that ye have chosen.
[30] For ye shall be as an oak whose leaf fadeth, and as a garden that
hath no water.
[31] And the strong shall be as tow, and the maker of it as a spark, and
they shall both burn together, and none shall quench them.

The Future House of God
Isaiah 2
Many people
claim to be Christians today who in fact are only just professing, but
not possessing Eternal Life. Satan is the master deceiver and has many
good people caught in the throws of his lies and they do not spiritually
see, nor understand the clear Gospel message. Mat 13:13-15
"Therefore I speak to them in parables; because while seeing they do
not see, and while hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand.
"In their case the prophecy of Isaiah is being fulfilled, which says,
'YOU WILL KEEP ON HEARING, BUT WILL NOT UNDERSTAND; YOU WILL KEEP ON
SEEING, BUT WILL NOT PERCEIVE;15 FOR THE HEART OF THIS PEOPLE HAS BECOME
DULL, WITH THEIR EARS THEY SCARCELY HEAR, AND THEY HAVE CLOSED THEIR
EYES, OTHERWISE THEY WOULD SEE WITH THEIR EYES, HEAR WITH THEIR EARS,
AND UNDERSTAND WITH THEIR HEART AND RETURN, AND I WOULD HEAL THEM.'
It is sad that
so many people will miss Eternal Life because of stubborn hearts of
rebellion. On the other hand, those who are truly saved have a blessed
hope in store for them. 1Co 2:9 But as it is written, Eye
hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of
man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.
We often think of what heaven must be like. John gives us a little bit
of a description in Rev 21. And I John saw the holy city,
new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride
adorned for her husband. ... and shewed me that great city, the holy
Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God, Having the glory of God:
and her light was like unto a stone most precious,..., clear as crystal
And the building of the wall of it was of jasper: and the city was pure
gold, like unto clear glass. And the foundations of the wall of the
city were garnished with all manner of precious stones... And the twelve
gates were twelve pearls;... and the street of the city was pure gold,
as it were transparent glass. And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord
God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it. And the city had no
need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory
of God did lighten it, and the Lamb [is] the light thereof.
Dear Friend,
are you truly ready to meet your Maker? Is your name written in the
Lamb's book of Life?
Isa.2
[1] the word that Isaiah the son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and
Jerusalem.
[2] And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain
of the LORD's house shall be established in the top of the mountains,
and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto
it.
[3] And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to
the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he
will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out
of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.
[4] And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people:
and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears
into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation,
neither shall they learn war any more.
[5] O house of Jacob, come ye, and let us walk in the light of the
LORD.
[6] Therefore thou hast forsaken thy people the house of Jacob, because
they be replenished from the east, and are soothsayers like the Philistines,
and they please themselves in the children of strangers.
[7] Their land also is full of silver and gold, neither is there any
end of their treasures; their land is also full of horses, neither
is there any end of their chariots:
[8] Their land also is full of idols; they worship the work of their
own hands, that which their own fingers have made:
[9] And the mean man boweth down, and the great man humbleth himself:
therefore forgive them not.
[10] Enter into the rock, and hide thee in the dust, for fear of the
LORD, and for the glory of his majesty.
[11] The lofty looks of man shall be humbled, and the haughtiness
of men shall be bowed down, and the LORD alone shall be exalted in
that day.
[12] For the day of the LORD of hosts shall be upon every one that
is proud and lofty, and upon every one that is lifted up; and he shall
be brought low:
[13] And upon all the cedars of Lebanon, that are high and lifted
up, and upon all the oaks of Bashan,
[14] And upon all the high mountains, and upon all the hills that
are lifted up,
[15] And upon every high tower, and upon every fenced wall,
[16] And upon all the ships of Tarshish, and upon all pleasant pictures.
[17] And the loftiness of man shall be bowed down, and the haughtiness
of men shall be made low: and the LORD alone shall be exalted in that
day.
[18] And the idols he shall utterly abolish.
[19] And they shall go into the holes of the rocks, and into the caves
of the earth, for fear of the LORD, and for the glory of his majesty,
when he ariseth to shake terribly the earth.
[20] In that day a man shall cast his idols of silver, and his idols
of gold, which they made each one for himself to worship, to the moles
and to the bats;
[21] To go into the clefts of the rocks, and into the tops of the
ragged rocks, for fear of the LORD, and for the glory of his majesty,
when he ariseth to shake terribly the earth.
[22] Cease ye from man, whose breath is in his nostrils: for wherein
is he to be accounted of?

National
Anarchy and Spiritual Anarchy
Isaiah
3:1-8
Their
tongues and their hearts are in rebellion against God's leadership in
the matters of government. Sin in both word and deed draws down the righteous
indignation of God on any people. In Isaiah's time, integrity and honesty
were not found in political leaders. Americans are entering a year of
national elective offices and mud and lies will permeate the radio, television
and newspapers. Intellectual honesty and integrity will be forgotten and
politicians who spend the most money, and successfully tell the "biggest
lies" most often will become the next leaders of our fair land. We already
have anarchy in our land as mayors and judges are in the process of overriding
the laws and rewriting them according to the dictates of their evil hearts.
May God have mercy on our land! The bones of the Father's of our Constitution
and country are twisting and turning in their graves as they see and hear
what is being done in our judicial system.
The
second half of our passage has to do with Spiritual anarchy and rebellion
against God. Its signs are found in three spheres, Conscience, Reason,
and Pure Affection.
CONSCIENCE:
There is a spiritual conscience that was instilled in man before birth.
All people, regardless of national origin, or race, the world over have
a built-in instinct to worship some form of god. It may be idols,
or nature, or self, ancestors, or take on a multitude of other things,
but its there!
REASON:
We live in a nation that can no longer think for itself. We have been
dummied down by poor education, liberal media and the "boob-tube." Reason
is the ability to think logically and arrive at a conclusion and make
the right decisions.
PURE
AFFECTION: Is the means whereby we have a fondness, or friendly feelings
toward another. It is manifested in our relationship with God and mankind.
It is an old fashioned love that expresses itself in tenderness and overlooks
the faults of the one loved. It's expressed in word and deeds. It's in
conversation, eye contact, and selflessness. The "ME" society that came
in the 1970's has catapulted itself into every part of society, and the
church. "I am the most important" is the attitude of both believers and
non-believers.
Isa.3: 1-8
[1] For, behold, the Lord, the LORD of hosts, doth take away from Jerusalem
and from Judah the stay and the staff, the whole stay of bread, and the
whole stay of water,
[2] The mighty man, and the man of war, the judge, and the prophet, and
the prudent, and the ancient,
[3] The captain of fifty, and the honourable man, and the counseller,
and the cunning artificer, and the eloquent orator.
[4] And I will give children to be their princes, and babes shall rule
over them.
[5] And the people shall be oppressed, every one by another, and every
one by his neighbour: the child shall behave himself proudly against the
ancient, and the base against the honourable.
[6] When a man shall take hold of his brother of the house of his father,
saying, Thou hast clothing, be thou our ruler, and let this ruin be under
thy hand:
[7] In that day shall he swear, saying, I will not be an healer; for in
my house is neither bread nor clothing: make me not a ruler of the people.
[8] For Jerusalem is ruined, and Judah is fallen: because their tongue
and their doings are against the LORD, to provoke the eyes of his glory.

Hope
for the Future
Isaiah
4
The opening verse of this chapter is interesting. We read,
in that day seven women shall take hold of one man, saying, we will
eat our own bread, and wear our own apparel: only let us be called by thy
name, to take away our reproach. Judgment has fallen. Many
have died. The age is come to an end. The women would mourn because their
men (husbands, brothers, and male friends) would be dying in battle (Isa.
3:25). The city would be so destitute of men and the women would
be so disgraced that they would compete to gain a husband (4:1). (1)
The time is the
days immediately following the end of this age. Isaiah's initial audience
might have thought he was speaking of those who would survive the Exile.
However, in the light of Matthew 24:4-30 he was referring
to the people who will survive the difficulties in the Great Tribulation
just before the Lord Jesus Christ returns to set up His kingdom. (2)
The message is a message of hope and restoration. At His first coming
the nation Israel rejected Jesus Christ. The majority of those that survive
the tribulation will have turned to Christ in faith and hope.
In the Bible,
we read of three great beginnings where only those who know God live on
the earth. The first is at the creation of Adam and Eve. The second is
Noah and his family. The last are the days immediately following the judgment
of the great tribulation, and the end of this age. At this time, the angels
will separate the wheat from the tares. We read about this time in Matthew
13:30. Jesus said "in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers,
Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them
in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn." The
harvest is another picture of the end of this age. The barn is a picture
of plenty and blessing. The kingdom will be a time of unparalleled peace,
righteousness and prosperity. Oh, that today we understood the blessings
of righteousness! In verse 3 of our text we read, it shall come
to pass, that he that is left in Zion, and he that remaineth in Jerusalem,
shall be called holy, even every one that is written among the living
in Jerusalem... I believe we could enjoy such a time today if
most peoples' hearts were righteous.

Isa.4
[1] And in that day seven women shall take hold of one man, saying, We
will eat our own bread, and wear our own apparel: only let us be called
by thy name, to take away our reproach.
[2] In that day shall the branch of the LORD be beautiful and glorious,
and the fruit of the earth shall be excellent and comely for them that
are escaped of Israel.
[3] And it shall come to pass, that he that is left in Zion, and he that
remaineth in Jerusalem, shall be called holy, even every one that is written
among the living in Jerusalem:
[4] When the Lord shall have washed away the filth of the daughters of
Zion, and shall have purged the blood of Jerusalem from the midst thereof
by the spirit of judgment, and by the spirit of burning.
[5] And the LORD will create upon every dwelling place of mount Zion,
and upon her assemblies, a cloud and smoke by day, and the shining of
a flaming fire by night: for upon all the glory shall be a defence.
[6] And there shall be a tabernacle for a shadow in the daytime from the
heat, and for a place of refuge, and for a covert from storm and from
rain.

God's
Disappointing Vineyard
Isaiah
5
Our valley is
filled with orchards and vines and all kinds of fruit. These orchards
are carefully taken care of, pruned, watered, and harvested throughout
each year. Some years are better than others, depending on the weather
and the care that is given to them. This is also the picture that we
see in our text. Isaiah is comparing God's people to a vineyard which
God had carefully cultivated, but which did not bear fruit.
We need to see
the clear parallels given here. In our spiritual lives, it is God who
brings people to salvation. There are all kinds of churches who think
that it is their music or programs that are going to draw people in
to the church and so they run their churches like a business. The Scripture
says, Eph 1:5 Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children
by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,9
Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his
good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself: Phi 2:13 For it is
God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.
The vineyard belongs to Christ and it is He who will build the
church. Psa 127:1 Except the LORD build the house, they labour
in vain that build it: It is Christ who is the vine and true
Christians are the branches. He cuts off those branches, people who
only profess but bear no fruit. Joh 15:1 I am the true vine, and
my Father is the husbandman.2 Every branch in me that beareth not fruit
he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it,
that it may bring forth more fruit.
We really need
to understand, God will accomplish His purposes. We can either go with
Him obediently, or we can choose to suffer great eternal loss. In our
text, the people were living in their excess with big houses and lots
of income, but God brought it all to naught. You see, it is God who
gives us our daily bread. It is God who allows us to take our next breath.
It is God who sustains us in health and in sickness. And it is God who
brings us His salvation. Tit 2:11 For the grace of God that bringeth
salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness
and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in
this present world; Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious
appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ!
Say Dear Friend,
do you know Him?!
Isa.5
[1] Now will I sing to my wellbeloved a song of my beloved touching
his vineyard. My wellbeloved hath a vineyard in a very fruitful hill:
[2] And he fenced it, and gathered out the stones thereof, and planted
it with the choicest vine, and built a tower in the midst of it, and
also made a winepress therein: and he looked that it should bring forth
grapes, and it brought forth wild grapes.
[3] And now, O inhabitants of Jerusalem, and men of Judah, judge, I
pray you, betwixt me and my vineyard.
[4] What could have been done more to my vineyard, that I have not done
in it? wherefore, when I looked that it should bring forth grapes, brought
it forth wild grapes?
[5] And now go to; I will tell you what I will do to my vineyard: I
will take away the hedge thereof, and it shall be eaten up; and break
down the wall thereof, and it shall be trodden down:
[6] And I will lay it waste: it shall not be pruned, nor digged; but
there shall come up briers and thorns: I will also command the clouds
that they rain no rain upon it.
[7] For the vineyard of the LORD of hosts is the house of Israel, and
the men of Judah his pleasant plant: and he looked for judgment, but
behold oppression; for righteousness, but behold a cry.
[8] Woe unto them that join house to house, that lay field to field,
till there be no place, that they may be placed alone in the midst of
the earth!
[9] In mine ears said the LORD of hosts, Of a truth many houses shall
be desolate, even great and fair, without inhabitant.
[10] Yea, ten acres of vineyard shall yield one bath, and the seed of
an homer shall yield an ephah.
[11] Woe unto them that rise up early in the morning, that they may
follow strong drink; that continue until night, till wine inflame them!
[12] And the harp, and the viol, the tabret, and pipe, and wine, are
in their feasts: but they regard not the work of the LORD, neither consider
the operation of his hands.
[13] Therefore my people are gone into captivity, because they have
no knowledge: and their honourable men are famished, and their multitude
dried up with thirst.
[14] Therefore hell hath enlarged herself, and opened her mouth without
measure: and their glory, and their multitude, and their pomp, and he
that rejoiceth, shall descend into it.
[15] And the mean man shall be brought down, and the mighty man shall
be humbled, and the eyes of the lofty shall be humbled:
[16] But the LORD of hosts shall be exalted in judgment, and God that
is holy shall be sanctified in righteousness.
[17] Then shall the lambs feed after their manner, and the waste places
of the fat ones shall strangers eat.
[18] Woe unto them that draw iniquity with cords of vanity, and sin
as it were with a cart rope:
[19] That say, Let him make speed, and hasten his work, that we may
see it: and let the counsel of the Holy One of Israel draw nigh and
come, that we may know it!
[20] Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness
for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet
for bitter!
[21] Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their
own sight!
[22] Woe unto them that are mighty to drink wine, and men of strength
to mingle strong drink:
[23] Which justify the wicked for reward, and take away the righteousness
of the righteous from him!
[24] Therefore as the fire devoureth the stubble, and the flame consumeth
the chaff, so their root shall be as rottenness, and their blossom shall
go up as dust: because they have cast away the law of the LORD of hosts,
and despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.
[25] Therefore is the anger of the LORD kindled against his people,
and he hath stretched forth his hand against them, and hath smitten
them: and the hills did tremble, and their carcases were torn in the
midst of the streets. For all this his anger is not turned away, but
his hand is stretched out still.
[26] And he will lift up an ensign to the nations from far, and will
hiss unto them from the end of the earth: and, behold, they shall come
with speed swiftly:
[27] None shall be weary nor stumble among them; none shall slumber
nor sleep; neither shall the girdle of their loins be loosed, nor the
latchet of their shoes be broken:
[28] Whose arrows are sharp, and all their bows bent, their horses'
hoofs shall be counted like flint, and their wheels like a whirlwind:
[29] Their roaring shall be like a lion, they shall roar like young
lions: yea, they shall roar, and lay hold of the prey, and shall carry
it away safe, and none shall deliver it.
[30] And in that day they shall roar against them like the roaring of
the sea: and if one look unto the land, behold darkness and sorrow,
and the light is darkened in the heavens thereof.

I Dwell in the Midst of a People of Unclean
Lips
Isaiah 6: 5-8
Isaiah says, "I
am undone," literally "cut off, destroyed." God said to Moses in Ex.
33:20 Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and
live. Isaiah now sees himself as good as dead, because
he has seen the Lord. On several occasions in the Old Testament, when
humans saw the "angel of the Lord" they thought they were going to die.
Isaiah immediately saw himself as God sees him, a man of unclean lips.
A person must indeed be perfect never to offend with words. How often
have you wished you had not said something? Once words are spoken they
can never be taken back. Oh, we may try to apologize, but the offending
words seem never to be forgotten. I Corinthians 15:33 Be not deceived:
evil communications corrupt good manners.
"A Live Coal" verses
6, 7. When that red hot, glowing stone was taken from the Alter of Incense
and placed on Isaiah's lips, they were purged from all sin. My guess is
that Isaiah never forgot when that searing, flame touched to those tender
lips. "Laid it upon my mouth" literally, "he caused it to touch
my mouth." The seraphim brought the hot stone in touch with what Isaiah
had acknowledged was his number one sin, and the sins of his people. It
has been suggested that this fire was the fire of Divine Love.
Jesus said, "out of the abundance of the heart
the mouth speaketh," Matt. 12:34.
"The
call of God." verse 8. God now knows that Isaiah is ready to do His bidding.
Whom shall I send? Isaiah volunteered with no hesitation. He knew that
God had a message and Isaiah could deliver it. God's call to be a minister
is an elective honor and to be sent with God's message. The word "Send"
is used in John 20:21, Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto
you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you. We
too, are commissioned to go to our neighbors and friends and even to the
ends of the earth to tell all who will listen that they might be saved.
If someone had not told you, you would not be saved! We should never cease
to thank the Lord for the person that led us to the Lord, for without
that witness we would be hell bound.
Isaiah 6: 5-8 Then said I, Woe
is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell
in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the
King, the LORD of hosts.
[6] Then flew one of the seraphims unto me, having a live coal in his
hand, which he had taken with the tongs from off the altar:
[7] And he laid it upon my mouth, and said, Lo, this hath touched thy
lips; and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin purged.
[8] Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and
who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me.
[9] And he said, Go, and tell this people, Hear ye indeed, but understand
not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not

The Coming of Jesus Christ
Isaiah 7
We find the
theme of this chapter in verse 14. Here we read "the Lord himself
shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son,
and shall call his name Immanuel. Some have made a major issue
out of the fact that the Hebrew word used here does not always mean virgin.
This may be true, however, when this verse is quoted in the New Testament,
the Greek word that is used can only mean virgin. Jesus Christ came into
this earth without a human father. This fact is significant for it enabled
Him to be free from the pollution of sin.
This chapter opens
with the enemies of Israel conspiring against her. Among her enemies was
the northern kingdom which was begun in apostasy and, at this time, was
wholly dominated by apostasy. God assures His faithful people in the Southern
Kingdom that her enemies would not succeed. Isaiah made the startling
prophecy that within 65 years Israel would no longer even be a people
because they would be so shattered (7:8). Isaiah gave this prophecy in
734 b.c., so 65 years later was 669. When Assyria conquered Israel in
722, many Israelites were deported to other lands by Assyria and foreigners
were brought into Samaria (2 Kings 17:24). However, in 669
many more foreigners were transferred to Samaria)... This "shattered"
Israel, making it impossible for her to unite as a nation ("a people").
(1)
Ahaz was the king
of Judah. He did not believe Isaiah's prophecy. " Ahaz was told to
ask the Lord . . . for a sign" Ahaz, by rejecting the offer of a sign
from God's messenger, was in effect rejecting the One who sent the prophet.
The "alma'h was a virgin when Isaiah
spoke his message, but then she would marry and have a baby. When the
Aram-Israel alliance was broken the boy would still be young. Centuries
later the Holy Spirit led Matthew to quote Isaiah 7:14 as
a statement that was also true of a virgin birth (i.e., a birth to a woman
who was still a virgin). This is the first of many prophecies about the
Messiah given by Isaiah. (2) In other words, this is an example of
a prophecy which had a double fulfillment. One was in the life of the
prophet Isaiah, and the other, in the life of Jesus Christ.

Isa.7
[1] And it came to pass in the days of Ahaz the son of Jotham, the son
of Uzziah, king of Judah, that Rezin the king of Syria, and Pekah the
son of Remaliah, king of Israel, went up toward Jerusalem to war against
it, but could not prevail against it.
[2] And it was told the house of David, saying, Syria is confederate with
Ephraim. And his heart was moved, and the heart of his people, as the
trees of the wood are moved with the wind.
[3] Then said the LORD unto Isaiah, Go forth now to meet Ahaz, thou, and
Shear-jashub thy son, at the end of the conduit of the upper pool in the
highway of the fuller's field;
[4] And say unto him, Take heed, and be quiet; fear not, neither be fainthearted
for the two tails of these smoking firebrands, for the fierce anger of
Rezin with Syria, and of the son of Remaliah.
[5] Because Syria, Ephraim, and the son of Remaliah, have taken evil counsel
against thee, saying,
[6] Let us go up against Judah, and vex it, and let us make a breach therein
for us, and set a king in the midst of it, even the son of Tabeal:
[7] Thus saith the Lord GOD, It shall not stand, neither shall it come
to pass.
[8] For the head of Syria is Damascus, and the head of Damascus is Rezin;
and within threescore and five years shall Ephraim be broken, that it
be not a people.
[9] And the head of Ephraim is Samaria, and the head of Samaria is Remaliah's
son. If ye will not believe, surely ye shall not be established.
[10] Moreover the LORD spake again unto Ahaz, saying,
[11] Ask thee a sign of the LORD thy God; ask it either in the depth,
or in the height above.
[12] But Ahaz said, I will not ask, neither will I tempt the LORD.
[13] And he said, Hear ye now, O house of David; Is it a small thing for
you to weary men, but will ye weary my God also?
[14] Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin
shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.
[15] Butter and honey shall he eat, that he may know to refuse the evil,
and choose the good.
[16] For before the child shall know to refuse the evil, and choose the
good, the land that thou abhorrest shall be forsaken of both her kings.
[17] The LORD shall bring upon thee, and upon thy people, and upon thy
father's house, days that have not come, from the day that Ephraim departed
from Judah; even the king of Assyria.
[18] And it shall come to pass in that day, that the LORD shall hiss for
the fly that is in the uttermost part of the rivers of Egypt, and for
the bee that is in the land of Assyria.
[19] And they shall come, and shall rest all of them in the desolate valleys,
and in the holes of the rocks, and upon all thorns, and upon all bushes.
[20] In the same day shall the Lord shave with a rasor that is hired,
namely, by them beyond the river, by the king of Assyria, the head, and
the hair of the feet: and it shall also consume the beard.
[21] And it shall come to pass in that day, that a man shall nourish a
young cow, and two sheep;
[22] And it shall come to pass, for the abundance of milk that they shall
give he shall eat butter: for butter and honey shall every one eat that
is left in the land.
[23] And it shall come to pass in that day, that every place shall be,
where there were a thousand vines at a thousand silverlings, it shall
even be for briers and thorns.
[24] With arrows and with bows shall men come thither; because all the
land shall become briers and thorns.
[25] And on all hills that shall be digged with the mattock, there shall
not come thither the fear of briers and thorns: but it shall be for the
sending forth of oxen, and for the treading of lesser cattle.

Fear God, Heed His Word!
Isaiah 8
There are many people today who want to hear
spiritual words and religious things, but just like in our text today
with Isaiah, they are not interested from the heart. Can you imagine preaching
and teaching to people who lie and tell you what you want to hear, but
then turn and do their own thing in spite of the warnings of the Lord.
It happened to Isaiah and to Ezekiel, too. Eze 33:30-33. Also, thou
son of man, the children of thy people still are talking against thee
by the walls and in the doors of the houses, and speak one to another,
every one to his brother, saying, Come, I pray you, and hear what is the
word that cometh forth from the LORD. And they come unto thee as the people
cometh, and they sit before thee as my people, and they hear thy words,
but they will not do them: for with their mouth they shew much love, but
their heart goeth after their covetousness. And, lo, thou art unto them
as a very lovely song of one that hath a pleasant voice, and can play
well on an instrument: for they hear thy words, but they do them not.
And when this cometh to pass, (lo, it will come,) then shall they know
that a prophet hath been among them.
Our society today is seriously caught in apostasy
and apathy. Many good people are doing nothing, as we see our great nation,
founded upon God's Word, going down the tubes. What will it take, what
will God have to do to bring about an obedient and a humble and contrite
spirit in people; a people who desire Him? The scriptures are clear about
the age that we live in. We are in the age of Grace. The very next step
is the return of Christ to rapture His saints out and then the world will
be thrown into the 7 year tribulation, a time unprecedented, a time as
never before, a time when many will see the error of their ways. Sadly
even then, there are going to be many more who will not turn and who will
rebel against God to their eternal doom.
The choice that Joshua made for his family
is a choice that we all should follow. Jos 24:15 And if it seem
evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve;
whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side
of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but
as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD. Say Friend, will
you too serve the Lord!
Isa.8
[1] Moreover the LORD said unto me, Take thee a great roll, and write
in it with a man's pen concerning Maher-shalal-hash-baz.
[2] And I took unto me faithful witnesses to record, Uriah the priest,
and Zechariah the son of Jeberechiah.
[3] And I went unto the prophetess; and she conceived, and bare a son.
Then said the LORD to me, Call his name Maher-shalal-hash-baz.
[4] For before the child shall have knowledge to cry, My father, and my
mother, the riches of Damascus and the spoil of Samaria shall be taken
away before the king of Assyria.
[5] The LORD spake also unto me again, saying,
[6] Forasmuch as this people refuseth the waters of Shiloah that go softly,
and rejoice in Rezin and Remaliah's son;
[7] Now therefore, behold, the Lord bringeth up upon them the waters of
the river, strong and many, even the king of Assyria, and all his glory:
and he shall come up over all his channels, and go over all his banks:
[8] And he shall pass through Judah; he shall overflow and go over, he
shall reach even to the neck; and the stretching out of his wings shall
fill the breadth of thy land, O Immanuel.
[9] Associate yourselves, O ye people, and ye shall be broken in pieces;
and give ear, all ye of far countries: gird yourselves, and ye shall be
broken in pieces; gird yourselves, and ye shall be broken in pieces.
[10] Take counsel together, and it shall come to nought; speak the word,
and it shall not stand: for God is with us.
[11] For the LORD spake thus to me with a strong hand, and instructed
me that I should not walk in the way of this people, saying,
[12] Say ye not, A confederacy, to all them to whom this people shall
say, A confederacy; neither fear ye their fear, nor be afraid.
[13] Sanctify the LORD of hosts himself; and let him be your fear, and
let him be your dread.
[14] And he shall be for a sanctuary; but for a stone of stumbling and
for a rock of offence to both the houses of Israel, for a gin and for
a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
[15] And many among them shall stumble, and fall, and be broken, and be
snared, and be taken.
[16] Bind up the testimony, seal the law among my disciples.
[17] And I will wait upon the LORD, that hideth his face from the house
of Jacob, and I will look for him.
[18] Behold, I and the children whom the LORD hath given me are for signs
and for wonders in Israel from the LORD of hosts, which dwelleth in mount
Zion.
[19] And when they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that have familiar
spirits, and unto wizards that peep, and that mutter: should not a people
seek unto their God? for the living to the dead?
[20] To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this
word, it is because there is no light in them.
[21] And they shall pass through it, hardly bestead and hungry: and it
shall come to pass, that when they shall be hungry, they shall fret themselves,
and curse their king and their God, and look upward.
[22] And they shall look unto the earth; and behold trouble and darkness,
dimness of anguish; and they shall be driven to darkness.

The People Who Walked
in Darkness
Have seen a Great
Light
Isaiah 9:2-7
The first great
prophecy of this chapter is in verse two and is quoted by Jesus, The
people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them which sat in
the region and shadow of death, light is sprung up, Matthew
4:16. The whole known world was in darkness when Jesus came to minister
two thousand years ago. The Jews were in more darkness than the Gentiles,
because they had the Old Testament and should have known the words from
Isaiah 9. The Jews knew, but had rejected. The Gentiles did not know,
but received and to this twenty-first-century we are blessed because of
the ministry of twelve believing Jews, who accepted the challenge and
went to the then known world with the Gospel message.
The second
great prophecy is now before us, verses 6 and 7. For unto us a child
is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his
shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty
God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his
government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David,
and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and
with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts
will perform this.
The name "Wonderful,"
is found many times in the Scriptures, but there is one outstanding
reference found in Judges 13: 17 and 18. One commentator says it should
have been translated, "secret," another says He is "incomprehensible."
We personally accept the latter above the former, because there is no
word in our language that covers the greatness of our Saviour.
"Counselor"
He is the Supreme Counselor who is qualified to give wisdom to all.
"The mighty
God" literally means the "Mighty Almighty God," El Gibbor is the Hebrew
name, also the "conquering One."
"The Everlasting
Father" He is the Planner of the ages, the Eternal One, He controls
all creation, Col. 1:17.
"The Prince
of Peace" "The Peaceful Prince," He shall promote and increase His
government and peace without war.
Isaiah 9: 2-7 The people that
walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land
of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined.
[3] Thou hast multiplied the nation, and not increased the joy: they joy
before thee according to the joy in harvest, and as men rejoice when they
divide the spoil.
[4] For thou hast broken the yoke of his burden, and the staff of his
shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, as in the day of Midian.
[5] For every battle of the warrior is with confused noise, and garments
rolled in blood; but this shall be with burning and fuel of fire.
[6] For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government
shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counseller,
The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
[7] Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end,
upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish
it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal
of the LORD of hosts will perform this.

God is Sovereign
on Earth
Isaiah
10
This
chapter opens with another very interesting statement. In verse 1, we
read woe unto them that decree unrighteous decrees...?
Our founding fathers rightly understood that the foundation of all
law comes from nature and the God of nature. When human potentates pass
laws contrary to the law of God they are unrighteous decrees
or illegal laws. In this chapter, Isaiah ... contrasted two kingdoms:
the Assyrian Empire and God's millennial kingdom. Assyria would fall
because it dared to defeat God's people. Even though God used the Assyrian
Empire to punish Israel, He did not like the attitude Assyria displayed.
(1)
God
uses the nation of Assyria as an instrument of judgment on Israel. Israel's
sin was in giving way to evil and establishing this corruption in law.
God had commissioned Assyria to chasten Israel as the rod of His
anger and the club of His wrath. Because Israel was godless and had
angered God with her sin, Assyria would plunder her cities and ruthlessly
trample her people. God often uses unlikely instruments to accomplish
His purposes in the world (cf. His using Babylon against Judah, which
puzzled Habakkuk, Hab. 1:6-17). (2) Those in power thought that
they could do as they pleased. Now they would be subject to the same
corrupt power at the hands of the Assyrians. What comes around goes
around. A principle of God's justice in this world is that we will reap
what we sow.
The
Assyrians were guilty of the same corruption. Therefore God would deal
with them as well. They were drunk with power and saw themselves as
immune from divine justice. The Assyrian king boasts that God cannot
save Hezekiah and Jerusalem. In 701 b.c. 185,000 Assyrian soldiers
surrounding Jerusalem were killed (37:36-37). Then in 609 b.c. the Assyrian
Empire fell to Babylon. The fall of the Assyrian Empire is a prototype
of the fall of all who oppose God and His plans for His covenant people.
(3) God's purpose will come to pass in this earth. It cannot be frustrated.
If this were not true, the ultimate triumph of good would not be certain,
and we would be without hope. In defending Jerusalem, God injects Himself
in a miraculous and powerful way. Whenever, God acts like this it is
to bring to pass His righteous purpose on this earth.

Commentary, (Wheaton, Illinois: Scripture Press Publications, Inc.)
1983, 1985.
Isa.10
[1] Woe unto them that decree unrighteous decrees, and that write grievousness
which they have prescribed;
[2] To turn aside the needy from judgment, and to take away the right
from the poor of my people, that widows may be their prey, and that
they may rob the fatherless!
[3] And what will ye do in the day of visitation, and in the desolation
which shall come from far? to whom will ye flee for help? and where
will ye leave your glory?
[4] Without me they shall bow down under the prisoners, and they shall
fall under the slain. For all this his anger is not turned away, but
his hand is stretched out still.
[5] O Assyrian, the rod of mine anger, and the staff in their hand is
mine indignation.
[6] I will send him against an hypocritical nation, and against the
people of my wrath will I give him a charge, to take the spoil, and
to take the prey, and to tread them down like the mire of the streets.
[7] Howbeit he meaneth not so, neither doth his heart think so; but
it is in his heart to destroy and cut off nations not a few.
[8] For he saith, Are not my princes altogether kings?
[9] Is not Calno as Carchemish? is not Hamath as Arpad? is not Samaria
as Damascus?
[10] As my hand hath found the kingdoms of the idols, and whose graven
images did excel them of Jerusalem and of Samaria;
[11] Shall I not, as I have done unto Samaria and her idols, so do to
Jerusalem and her idols?
[12] Wherefore it shall come to pass, that when the Lord hath performed
his whole work upon mount Zion and on Jerusalem, I will punish the fruit
of the stout heart of the king of Assyria, and the glory of his high
looks.
[13] For he saith, By the strength of my hand I have done it, and by
my wisdom; for I am prudent: and I have removed the bounds of the people,
and have robbed their treasures, and I have put down the inhabitants
like a valiant man:
[14] And my hand hath found as a nest the riches of the people: and
as one gathereth eggs that are left, have I gathered all the earth;
and there was none that moved the wing, or opened the mouth, or peeped.
[15] Shall the axe boast itself against him that heweth therewith? or
shall the saw magnify itself against him that shaketh it? as if the
rod should shake itself against them that lift it up, or as if the staff
should lift up itself, as if it were no wood.
[16] Therefore shall the Lord, the Lord of hosts, send among his fat
ones leanness; and under his glory he shall kindle a burning like the
burning of a fire.
[17] And the light of Israel shall be for a fire, and his Holy One for
a flame: and it shall burn and devour his thorns and his briers in one
day;
[18] And shall consume the glory of his forest, and of his fruitful
field, both soul and body: and they shall be as when a standardbearer
fainteth.
[19] And the rest of the trees of his forest shall be few, that a child
may write them.
[20] And it shall come to pass in that day, that the remnant of Israel,
and such as are escaped of the house of Jacob, shall no more again stay
upon him that smote them; but shall stay upon the LORD, the Holy One
of Israel, in truth.
[21] The remnant shall return, even the remnant of Jacob, unto the mighty
God.
[22] For though thy people Israel be as the sand of the sea, yet a remnant
of them shall return: the consumption decreed shall overflow with righteousness.
[23] For the Lord GOD of hosts shall make a consumption, even determined,
in the midst of all the land.
[24] Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD of hosts, O my people that dwellest
in Zion, be not afraid of the Assyrian: he shall smite thee with a rod,
and shall lift up his staff against thee, after the manner of Egypt.
[25] For yet a very little while, and the indignation shall cease, and
mine anger in their destruction.
[26] And the LORD of hosts shall stir up a scourge for him according
to the slaughter of Midian at the rock of Oreb: and as his rod was upon
the sea, so shall he lift it up after the manner of Egypt.
[27] And it shall come to pass in that day, that his burden shall be
taken away from off thy shoulder, and his yoke from off thy neck, and
the yoke shall be destroyed because of the anointing.
[28] He is come to Aiath, he is passed to Migron; at Michmash he hath
laid up his carriages:
[29] They are gone over the passage: they have taken up their lodging
at Geba; Ramah is afraid; Gibeah of Saul is fled.
[30] Lift up thy voice, O daughter of Gallim: cause it to be heard unto
Laish, O poor Anathoth.
[31] Madmenah is removed; the inhabitants of Gebim gather themselves
to flee.
[32] As yet shall he remain at Nob that day: he shall shake his hand
against the mount of the daughter of Zion, the hill of Jerusalem.
[33] Behold, the Lord, the LORD of hosts, shall lop the bough with terror:
and the high ones of stature shall be hewn down, and the haughty shall
be humbled.
[34] And he shall cut down the thickets of the forest with iron, and
Lebanon shall fall by a mighty one.

The Reign of Jesse's Offspring
Isaiah 11
We see in our
text that with the Babylonian captivity of 586 B.C. King David's dynasty
appeared to be as decimated as the Assyrian army. One of the major differences
between the two was that life remained in the stump and the roots of
the line of David. That life was to manifest itself in new growth in
the form of the Rod and the Branch. Jesse of course was King David's
father, through whose line the Messianic King was to come in Ruth 4:22
and 1 Samuel 16:1,12,13 The Branch also mentioned in vs. 1 is a clear
reference and title for the Messiah.
Then we see
a wonderful mention in vs. 2 of the Spirit of the Lord. Just as the
Spirit of the Lord came upon David when he was anointed king in 1 Samuel
16:13 and just as David had ask for the Spirit of the Lord in Psalm
51, so the Spirit of the Lord will rest upon David's descendant, Jesus
Christ, who will rule the world. It is also interesting to note that
this verse also refers to the 3 persons of the Holy Trinity. Vs. 2 also
gives us the Spirit imparted qualifications that will enable the Messiah
to rule justly and effectively. These are wisdom and understanding,
counsel and might, and knowledge and fear of the Lord.
It is also
interesting to note in vs. 9 "The full knowledge of the Lord." Everyone
will know the Lord when He returns to fulfill His New Covenant with
Israel. Jer 31:34 And they shall teach no more every man
his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for
they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of
them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will
remember their sin no more.
How does all
this apply to us today? Simply this; the Gospel message of Jesus Christ,
God's only begotten Son, who came through the line of King David, is
what saves a person. It is the power of God unto salvation to every
one that believes. Therefore if a person professes to know Christ, but
there is no spiritual fruit, that person is making a false profession
and will spend an eternity in Hell. It is not the profession, nor the
prayer that saves us. It is the repentant heart and life through God's
grace by faith that saves us. God will make a person new, if their repentance
is genuine. Do you know the Savior who died for your sin? Is your name
written in the Lamb's book of Life?! Where's the Fruit?
Isa.11
[1] And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a
Branch shall grow out of his roots:
[2] And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom
and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge
and of the fear of the LORD;
[3] And shall make him of quick understanding in the fear of the LORD:
and he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither reprove
after the hearing of his ears:
[4] But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with
equity for the meek of the earth: and he shall smite the earth with
the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay
the wicked.
[5] And righteousness shall be the girdle of his loins, and faithfulness
the girdle of his reins.
[6] The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie
down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together;
and a little child shall lead them.
[7] And the cow and the bear shall feed; their young ones shall lie
down together: and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.
[8] And the sucking child shall play on the hole of the asp, and the
weaned child shall put his hand on the cockatrice' den.
[9] They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain: for the
earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD, as the waters cover
the sea.
[10] And in that day there shall be a root of Jesse, which shall stand
for an ensign of the people; to it shall the Gentiles seek: and his
rest shall be glorious.
[11] And it shall come to pass in that day, that the Lord shall set
his hand again the second time to recover the remnant of his people,
which shall be left, from Assyria, and from Egypt, and from Pathros,
and from Cush, and from Elam, and from Shinar, and from Hamath, and
from the islands of the sea.
[12] And he shall set up an ensign for the nations, and shall assemble
the outcasts of Israel, and gather together the dispersed of Judah from
the four corners of the earth.
[13] The envy also of Ephraim shall depart, and the adversaries of Judah
shall be cut off: Ephraim shall not envy Judah, and Judah shall not
vex Ephraim.
[14] But they shall fly upon the shoulders of the Philistines toward
the west; they shall spoil them of the east together: they shall lay
their hand upon Edom and Moab; and the children of Ammon shall obey
them.
[15] And the LORD shall utterly destroy the tongue of the Egyptian sea;
and with his mighty wind shall he shake his hand over the river, and
shall smite it in the seven streams, and make men go over dryshod.
[16] And there shall be an highway for the remnant of his people, which
shall be left, from Assyria; like as it was to Israel in the day that
he came up out of the land of Egypt.

An Oasis in the Desert of Sin and Sorrow
Isaiah 12:1-6
For the last several months, we have been
reading of the surety of Israel and Judah being carried away into the
Seventy Years of Babylonian Captivity. In the current chapter, we have
a glorious sound of victory and a new relationship with God, for both
Israel and the Church. This passage has a double reference that includes
Israel and the Church in a future restoration. We will look at the twofold
prophesy in the next two paragraphs.
To the Jews first: And in that
day, the Millennium, after Israel is fully restored under the leadership
of their Messiah, all the events of this chapter will be literally fulfilled.
There are fifteen different forms of worship for the Jewish people found
in these six verses. "
O LORD, I will praise thee: ... thou comfortedst me ... God is my
salvation... I will trust, and not be afraid... the LORD JEHOVAH is
my strength and my song...he also is become my salvation...Therefore
with joy shall ye draw water out of the wells of salvation... Praise
the LORD ... call upon his name ... declare his doings among the people...
make mention that his name is exalted ... Sing unto the LORD...he has
done excellent things: this is known in all the earth... Cry out and
shout, thou inhabitant of Zion... for great is the Holy One of Israel
in the midst of you.
To the Church Second: "The Wells
of Salvation," found in verse 3 are always open and flowing to all
who will receive the gift of the "Water of Life." Jesus
answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst
again: But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall
never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a
well of water springing up into everlasting life, John 4:13-14.
That water is ever fresh, ever abundant, ever free, ever health giving!
It is an artesian well, of free flowing water to satiate the souls,
of the thirsty; the world around. In the Millennium we will reign with
Christ here on earth. Since we are going to reign with Him in the future,
why not live so close to Him today that all our friends and acquaintances
will see Him now and desire to know Him as we do? Tell Christ that you
love Him, and live it to the fullest.
Isa.12
[1] And in that day thou shalt say, O LORD, I will praise thee: though
thou wast angry with me, thine anger is turned away, and thou comfortedst
me.
[2] Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for
the LORD JEHOVAH is my strength and my song; he also is become my salvation.
[3] Therefore with joy shall ye draw water out of the wells of salvation.
[4] And in that day shall ye say, Praise the LORD, call upon his name,
declare his doings among the people, make mention that his name is exalted.
[5] Sing unto the LORD; for he hath done excellent things: this is known
in all the earth.
[6] Cry out and shout, thou inhabitant of Zion: for great is the Holy
One of Israel in the midst of thee.

The Enemies of God
Isaiah 13
In some ways,
we could think of the history of this world as a tale of two cities. The
cities are Babylon and Jerusalem. Babylon is the kingdom of the enemy.
This is brought out even more clearly as Satan is described as the real
king of Babylon in the chapter 14. Isaiah's oracle concerns Babylon.
Babylon ... had long been a rallying point of anti-God activity. From
its very beginning (Gen. 11:1-9) it had been characterized by rebellion
against God. ... it was viewed as a place of hatred against the God of
Israel. ... in the Tribulation it will be a center of hatred against God
(Rev. 17-18).
(1)In
Isaiah's day that judgment was coming because of the tremendous political
turmoil of the next several decades that would culminate with the fall
of Babylon to the Assyrians in 689 b.c. That political turmoil was similar
to the judgment which will come on the whole world just before God establishes
His millennial kingdom on the earth.
(2) It is interesting
to note that there are cycles and patterns in human history. The spiritual
forces at work in Isaiah's day will also be at work at the end of the
age.
The prophecies
of this chapter speak of events in Isaiah's day, but also events that
will take place at the end of the age. In particular we read in verse
12, I will make a man more precious than fine gold; even a man than
the golden wedge of Ophir. Jesus made a very similar statement
concerning the end of the age. Matthew 24:22 And except those days
should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved... At the
end of this age, the struggle between good and evil will come to a head.
At this time, God will once again inject Himself in a supernatural way
to insure the triumph of good over evil. The history of this world will
reveal clearly, the character of evil, the grace and goodness of God,
and the failure of the best of God's people. Oh, that God's people would
stand as an effective force of righteousness against the enemy! Sadly,
even the best of God's servants fail, leaving a clear message that without
God, there would be no hope. If we understood this, we would yield ourselves
to righteousness, and not try to serve God in the flesh.

Isa.13
[1] The burden of Babylon, which Isaiah the son of Amoz did see.
[2] Lift ye up a banner upon the high mountain, exalt the voice unto them,
shake the hand, that they may go into the gates of the nobles.
[3] I have commanded my sanctified ones, I have also called my mighty
ones for mine anger, even them that rejoice in my highness.
[4] The noise of a multitude in the mountains, like as of a great people;
a tumultuous noise of the kingdoms of nations gathered together: the LORD
of hosts mustereth the host of the battle.
[5] They come from a far country, from the end of heaven, even the LORD,
and the weapons of his indignation, to destroy the whole land.
[6] Howl ye; for the day of the LORD is at hand; it shall come as a destruction
from the Almighty.
[7] Therefore shall all hands be faint, and every man's heart shall melt:
[8] And they shall be afraid: pangs and sorrows shall take hold of them;
they shall be in pain as a woman that travaileth: they shall be amazed
one at another; their faces shall be as flames.
[9] Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, cruel both with wrath and fierce
anger, to lay the land desolate: and he shall destroy the sinners thereof
out of it.
[10] For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not
give their light: the sun shall be darkened in his going forth, and the
moon shall not cause her light to shine.
[11] And I will punish the world for their evil, and the wicked for their
iniquity; and I will cause the arrogancy of the proud to cease, and will
lay low the haughtiness of the terrible.
[12] I will make a man more precious than fine gold; even a man than the
golden wedge of Ophir.
[13] Therefore I will shake the heavens, and the earth shall remove out
of her place, in the wrath of the LORD of hosts, and in the day of his
fierce anger.
[14] And it shall be as the chased roe, and as a sheep that no man taketh
up: they shall every man turn to his own people, and flee every one into
his own land.
[15] Every one that is found shall be thrust through; and every one that
is joined unto them shall fall by the sword.
[16] Their children also shall be dashed to pieces before their eyes;
their houses shall be spoiled, and their wives ravished.
[17] Behold, I will stir up the Medes against them, which shall not regard
silver; and as for gold, they shall not delight in it.
[18] Their bows also shall dash the young men to pieces; and they shall
have no pity on the fruit of the womb; their eye shall not spare children.
[19] And Babylon, the glory of kingdoms, the beauty of the Chaldees' excellency,
shall be as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah.
[20] It shall never be inhabited, neither shall it be dwelt in from generation
to generation: neither shall the Arabian pitch tent there; neither shall
the shepherds make their fold there.
[21] But wild beasts of the desert shall lie there; and their houses shall
be full of doleful creatures; and owls shall dwell there, and satyrs shall
dance there.
[22] And the wild beasts of the islands shall cry in their desolate houses,
and dragons in their pleasant palaces: and her time is near to come, and
her days shall not be prolonged.

The Fall of Lucifer
Isaiah 14
This chapter
deals with the Lord having Mercy on the house of Jacob, the Fall of the
king of Babylon, the Fall of Lucifer, and that Babylon, Assyria, and Philistia
will be destroyed. We would like to focus on the Fall of Lucifer for our
devotion today. God created Lucifer as the Cherub (Angel) who covers.
Lucifer means "shining one or morning star". In either case, we know that
he was very beautiful from the description in Eze 28:12 " Thus saith
the Lord GOD; Thou sealest up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in
beauty.13 Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone
was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the
onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and
gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in
thee in the day that thou wast created.14 Thou art the anointed cherub
that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain
of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire.15
Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till
iniquity was found in thee.17 Thine heart was lifted up because of thy
beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I
will cast thee to the ground, I will lay thee before kings, that they
may behold thee.
We need to understand
that Lucifer fell from heaven, from the very throne of God, because of
the sin of pride. Pride is an ungodly sin that will literally keep most
people from ever getting to heaven. 1Jo 2:16 For all that is in
the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride
of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. The sin of
pride is a terrible thing. It has ruined many good people; it has cost
many Good "professing Christians" eternity. It really doesn't matter what
you think about your eternal state. It REALLY matters what God thinks
about it. If God does not agree with you nor know you, where are you going
to go when you die? To know for sure, we must confess with God that we
are the ones that nailed Christ to the cross, that we are guilty of the
very sin of pride that cost Satan his place in heaven. Interestingly,
a third of the angels fell too. This speaks volumes as to the company
that we keep. Are you absolutely sure you know Jesus Christ as your Lord
and Savior? It really is a matter of life or death!
Isa.14
[1] For the LORD will have mercy on Jacob, and will yet choose Israel,
and set them in their own land: and the strangers shall be joined with
them, and they shall cleave to the house of Jacob.
[2] And the people shall take them, and bring them to their place: and
the house of Israel shall possess them in the land of the LORD for servants
and handmaids: and they shall take them captives, whose captives they
were; and they shall rule over their oppressors.
[3] And it shall come to pass in the day that the LORD shall give thee
rest from thy sorrow, and from thy fear, and from the hard bondage wherein
thou wast made to serve,
[4] That thou shalt take up this proverb against the king of Babylon,
and say, How hath the oppressor ceased! the golden city ceased!
[5] The LORD hath broken the staff of the wicked, and the sceptre of the
rulers.
[6] He who smote the people in wrath with a continual stroke, he that
ruled the nations in anger, is persecuted, and none hindereth.
[7] The whole earth is at rest, and is quiet: they break forth into singing.
[8] Yea, the fir trees rejoice at thee, and the cedars of Lebanon, saying,
Since thou art laid down, no feller is come up against us.
[9] Hell from beneath is moved for thee to meet thee at thy coming: it
stirreth up the dead for thee, even all the chief ones of the earth; it
hath raised up from their thrones all the kings of the nations.
[10] All they shall speak and say unto thee, Art thou also become weak
as we? art thou become like unto us?
[11] Thy pomp is brought down to the grave, and the noise of thy viols:
the worm is spread under thee, and the worms cover thee.
[12] How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how
art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!
[13] For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will
exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount
of the congregation, in the sides of the north:
[14] I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the
most High.
[15] Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.
[16] They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, and consider thee,
saying, Is this the man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake
kingdoms;
[17] That made the world as a wilderness, and destroyed the cities thereof;
that opened not the house of his prisoners?
[18] All the kings of the nations, even all of them, lie in glory, every
one in his own house.
[19] But thou art cast out of thy grave like an abominable branch, and
as the raiment of those that are slain, thrust through with a sword, that
go down to the stones of the pit; as a carcase trodden under feet.
[20] Thou shalt not be joined with them in burial, because thou hast destroyed
thy land, and slain thy people: the seed of evildoers shall never be renowned.
[21] Prepare slaughter for his children for the iniquity of their fathers;
that they do not rise, nor possess the land, nor fill the face of the
world with cities.
[22] For I will rise up against them, saith the LORD of hosts, and cut
off from Babylon the name, and remnant, and son, and nephew, saith the
LORD.
[23] I will also make it a possession for the bittern, and pools of water:
and I will sweep it with the besom of destruction, saith the LORD of hosts.
[24] The LORD of hosts hath sworn, saying, Surely as I have thought, so
shall it come to pass; and as I have purposed, so shall it stand:
[25] That I will break the Assyrian in my land, and upon my mountains
tread him under foot: then shall his yoke depart from off them, and his
burden depart from off their shoulders.
[26] This is the purpose that is purposed upon the whole earth: and this
is the hand that is stretched out upon all the nations.
[27] For the LORD of hosts hath purposed, and who shall disannul it? and
his hand is stretched out, and who shall turn it back?
[28] In the year that king Ahaz died was this burden.
[29] Rejoice not thou, whole Palestina, because the rod of him that smote
thee is broken: for out of the serpent's root shall come forth a cockatrice,
and his fruit shall be a fiery flying serpent.
[30] And the firstborn of the poor shall feed, and the needy shall lie
down in safety: and I will kill thy root with famine, and he shall slay
thy remnant.
[31] Howl, O gate; cry, O city; thou, whole Palestina, art dissolved:
for there shall come from the north a smoke, and none shall be alone in
his appointed times.
[32] What shall one then answer the messengers of the nation? That the
LORD hath founded Zion, and the poor of his people shall trust in it.

The Moabites, the Children of Lot
Isaiah 15:1-9
The Moabites are the children of Lot, as
the result of an incestuous relationship with Lot's firstborn daughter,
following the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, and the death of his
wife and other children in Sodom. The son born, to the firstborn daughter
was named Moab, and from this child came the nation of the Moabites.
Ruth was of this family and became the grandmother of King David. Petra,
"The Rose Red City, Half as Old as Time" is in the ancient land of the
Moabites.
In Judges 3:12-26, we see three nations allied
together to make war with Israel; Eglon, King of Moab, the Ammonites
and Amalekites, and Israel served Moab for eighteen years. Ehud, a left
handed Benjamite and Judge in Israel went to Eglon the king of Moab,
a very fat man, and by subtlety plunged a dagger into the king, killing
him and Ehud escaped to the army of Israel. Israel then defeated the
Moabites and had rest for eighty years.
In 2 Chronicles 20, we have these three nations
along with Syria about to make war again with Judah. King Jehoshaphat
called the nation to fasting and prayer, God answered, and the heathen
were destroyed by the LORD. The people of Judah went out to the battle-field
and found the attackers dead and also found great riches of spoil among
the dead. God had fought the battle for Judah and the fear of God was
upon the nations around Judah.
Isaiah tells in these nine verses of our
text, that God is again going to bring Moab to its knees. Note verse
6, the hay is withered away, the grass faileth, and there is no green
thing. In other words, God has sent a famine to the land of Moab. In
verse 7, it seems that they tried to escape to the east into Arabia
and the Arabs turned against Moab and helped to destroy Moab. When God
sends destruction upon a land, because they refuse to worship Him, He
uses both nature and humans to destroy that nation. Beware America,
we are about to stand in God's judgment for the sins of our nation and
the rejection of God in our society. God is not mocked; judgment will
fall on all who reject God.
Isa.15
[1] The burden of Moab. Because in the night Ar of Moab is laid waste,
and brought to silence; because in the night Kir of Moab is laid waste,
and brought to silence;
[2] He is gone up to Bajith, and to Dibon, the high places, to weep:
Moab shall howl over Nebo, and over Medeba: on all their heads shall
be baldness, and every beard cut off.
[3] In their streets they shall gird themselves with sackcloth: on the
tops of their houses, and in their streets, every one shall howl, weeping
abundantly.
[4] And Heshbon shall cry, and Elealeh: their voice shall be heard even
unto Jahaz: therefore the armed soldiers of Moab shall cry out; his
life shall be grievous unto him.
[5] My heart shall cry out for Moab; his fugitives shall flee unto Zoar,
an heifer of three years old: for by the mounting up of Luhith with
weeping shall they go it up; for in the way of Horonaim they shall raise
up a cry of destruction.
[6] For the waters of Nimrim shall be desolate: for the hay is withered
away, the grass faileth, there is no green thing.
[7] Therefore the abundance they have gotten, and that which they have
laid up, shall they carry away to the brook of the willows.
[8] For the cry is gone round about the borders of Moab; the howling
thereof unto Eglaim, and the howling thereof unto Beer-elim.
[9] For the waters of Dimon shall be full of blood: for I will bring
more upon Dimon, lions upon him that escapeth of Moab, and upon the
remnant of the land.

A Warning Concerning Arrogance
Isaiah 16
In verse 6,
of this chapter we read, "we have heard of the pride of Moab; he
is very proud" Pride is a very destructive spiritual force in the
heart and life. The Assyrians were coming against Jerusalem. God promised
to defend His people. The Moabites could have found refuge in Israel.
However, they "fled all the way south to strongholds in Edom such
as Sela, about 50 miles south of Moab's southern border. If they really
wanted to be safe they should have joined themselves to Jerusalem"
(1) This demonstrated
that they trusted in their own abilities and resources rather than in
God. This is pride. We find the Biblical principle in Proverbs 16:18.
Here we read, Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit
before a fall.
There is the
greatest tendency for us to trust what we can see and understand rather
than trust God. Isaiah describes the future of Moab as they turn to
pride and unbelief. Because of their pride, confident that they did
not need God, the fruitfulness and productivity of their land would
be stopped (16:7-10). Several words indicated that the
fruit to be lost was grapes: raisin cakes (a delicacy; cf. 1
Chron. 12:40; Hosea 3:1) of Kir Hareseth (cf. Isa. 16:11),
another city in Moab, possibly the same as Kir (15:1), vines of Sibmah
(16:8-9), choicest vines.... vineyards (vv. 8, 10), wine... presses.
Harvests (v. 9) and orchards (v. 10) suggest other fruits too. (On Heshbon
and Elealeh in v. 9 see 15:4.) The invading army and the drought which
would accompany it would wipe out Moab's chances for survival. (2)
Indeed pride goes before destruction.
It is important
for us to understand that God has not given us sufficient resources
on this earth to succeed without Him. It is important that we are faithful
and do what
God is Love,
God is merciful, God is gracious, God is forgiving, and God is longsuffering.
But God is also righteous and just and He must punish sin! There is
an end to presuming upon God's grace and mercy. There are consequences
for sin. There is judgment that will take place in God's perfect timing
for all those who are disobedient. Time after time, God desired obedience
from His chosen people Israel. Time after time they directly disobeyed
God and did their own things and went their own ways instead. Eze
33:11 "Say to them, 'As I live!' declares the Lord GOD, 'I take no pleasure
in the death of the wicked, but rather that the wicked turn from his
way and live. Turn back, turn back from your evil ways! Why then will
you die, O house of Israel?'
Did you ever
stop to think about how many times you personally have had the opportunity
to be in church under the preaching of God's Holy Word, but paid little
attention; how many times you have had the opportunity to study and
meditate on God's Word, but didn't; how many times you could have memorized
a verse, but didn't; how many people you could have shared the message
of eternal life with someone, but didn't, etc? How many opportunities
have we missed? What could our lives have been like if we really, truly
obeyed God? Pastors preach their hearts out Friday after Friday and
yet few folks really listen, as is evidenced by their lack of spiritual
growth. Many people here the words of the Lord, but very few really
take those words to heart and obey. There is much religion in our society
today, but very little submission and obedience. Is it any wonder that
so many are walking spiritually blind? Most people do not even know
what they are missing and are blinded by the god of this world. 2Co
4:4 in whose case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the
unbelieving so that they might not see the light of the gospel of the
glory of Christ, who is the image of God.
Many good, professing
to be Christians, are doomed to destruction and judgment because of
unrepentant and unsubmissive hearts. They just don't know it because
they cannot see it. Satan has them fooled into thinking they are ok
right where they are. Gal 6:7 Do not be deceived, God is
not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap. For the
one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but
the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.
It's your choice! Without seeking Him in faith
and following His direction in life, we will come to destruction.
We can follow
the path of faith and obedience or we can follow the path of self sufficiency
and self will. The latter path is the path of pride. The end for all
who take the path of pride is destruction. This is true for Moab and
it will be true for all who follow the same path.

Isa.16
[1] Send ye the lamb to the ruler of the land from Sela to the wilderness,
unto the mount of the daughter of Zion.
[2] For it shall be, that, as a wandering bird cast out of the nest,
so the daughters of Moab shall be at the fords of Arnon.
[3] Take counsel, execute judgment; make thy shadow as the night in
the midst of the noonday; hide the outcasts; bewray not him that wandereth.
[4] Let mine outcasts dwell with thee, Moab; be thou a covert to them
from the face of the spoiler: for the extortioner is at an end, the
spoiler ceaseth, the oppressors are consumed out of the land.
[5] And in mercy shall the throne be established: and he shall sit upon
it in truth in the tabernacle of David, judging, and seeking judgment,
and hasting righteousness.
[6] We have heard of the pride of Moab; he is very proud: even of his
haughtiness, and his pride, and his wrath: but his lies shall not be
so.
[7] Therefore shall Moab howl for Moab, every one shall howl: for the
foundations of Kir-hareseth shall ye mourn; surely they are stricken.
[8] For the fields of Heshbon languish, and the vine of Sibmah: the
lords of the heathen have broken down the principal plants thereof,
they are come even unto Jazer, they wandered through the wilderness:
her branches are stretched out, they are gone over the sea.
[9] Therefore I will bewail with the weeping of Jazer the vine of Sibmah:
I will water thee with my tears, O Heshbon, and Elealeh: for the shouting
for thy summer fruits and for thy harvest is fallen.
[10] And gladness is taken away, and joy out of the plentiful field;
and in the vineyards there shall be no singing, neither shall there
be shouting: the treaders shall tread out no wine in their presses;
I have made their vintage shouting to cease.
[11] Wherefore my bowels shall sound like an harp for Moab, and mine
inward parts for Kir-haresh.
[12] And it shall come to pass, when it is seen that Moab is weary on
the high place, that he shall come to his sanctuary to pray; but he
shall not prevail.
[13] This is the word that the LORD hath spoken concerning Moab since
that time.
[14] But now the LORD hath spoken, saying, Within three years, as the
years of an hireling, and the glory of Moab shall be contemned, with
all that great multitude; and the remnant shall be very small and feeble.

Judgment Day
Isaiah 17
What would
you do if God pronounced judgment against you and your town? In fact,
the Holy Spirit's main job in the world today is, John 16:8
And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness,
and of judgment. So we know that God Is bringing a pronouncement
to all mankind and that pronouncement is, "Repent, The Kingdom
of God is At Hand!" We do not know when judgment day will
come but we need to be ready! Mat 24:36 But of that day
and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father
only.
Would any
person in their right mind refuse to go the heaven? The sad reality
is that there are many who refuse God out of sinful pride and arrogance.
Luk 13:23 And someone said to Him, "Lord, are there just
a few who are being saved?" And He said to them "Strive to enter through
the narrow door; for many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will
not be able. "Once the head of the house gets up and shuts the door,
and you begin to stand outside and knock on the door, saying, 'Lord,
open up to us!' then He will answer and say to you, 'I do not know
where you are from.' "Then you will begin to say, 'We ate and drank
in Your presence, and You taught in our streets'; and He will say,
'I tell you, I do not know where you are from; DEPART FROM ME, ALL
YOU EVILDOERS.'"In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of
teeth when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets
in the kingdom of God, but yourselves being thrown out.
Now why would
God call good professing Christians "evildoers" and not let them into
heaven. It is because God knows their hearts and He knows that they
have never truly repented of sin. Jer 17:9 The heart
is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know
it? I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every
man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.
Yes, it is God who knows our hearts and He will save those who will
turn from their sin. God is also a just God and must punish sin. Just
by not choosing God's ways, you have already chosen your own ways
and because we are all sinners, the wages of sin is Eternal death.
Jesus Christ died and paid the price for sin, once for all. The simple
fact is, He has done His part, it is now your choice! Whom will you
choose? God or self; Heaven or Hell. Those are the choices and judgment
day is imminent.
Isa.17
[1] The burden of Damascus. Behold, Damascus is taken away from being
a city, and it shall be a ruinous heap.
[2] The cities of Aroer are forsaken: they shall be for flocks, which
shall lie down, and none shall make them afraid.
[3] The fortress also shall cease from Ephraim, and the kingdom from
Damascus, and the remnant of Syria: they shall be as the glory of
the children of Israel, saith the LORD of hosts.
[4] And in that day it shall come to pass, that the glory of Jacob
shall be made thin, and the fatness of his flesh shall wax lean.
[5] And it shall be as when the harvestman gathereth the corn, and
reapeth the ears with his arm; and it shall be as he that gathereth
ears in the valley of Rephaim.
[6] Yet gleaning grapes shall be left in it, as the shaking of an
olive tree, two or three berries in the top of the uppermost bough,
four or five in the outmost fruitful branches thereof, saith the LORD
God of Israel.
[7] At that day shall a man look to his Maker, and his eyes shall
have respect to the Holy One of Israel.
[8] And he shall not look to the altars, the work of his hands, neither
shall respect that which his fingers have made, either the groves,
or the images.
[9] In that day shall his strong cities be as a forsaken bough, and
an uppermost branch, which they left because of the children of Israel:
and there shall be desolation.
[10] Because thou hast forgotten the God of thy salvation, and hast
not been mindful of the rock of thy strength, therefore shalt thou
plant pleasant plants, and shalt set it with strange slips:
[11] In the day shalt thou make thy plant to grow, and in the morning
shalt thou make thy seed to flourish: but the harvest shall be a heap
in the day of grief and of desperate sorrow.
[12] Woe to the multitude of many people, which make a noise like
the noise of the seas; and to the rushing of nations, that make a
rushing like the rushing of mighty waters!
[13] The nations shall rush like the rushing of many waters: but God
shall rebuke them, and they shall flee far off, and shall be chased
as the chaff of the mountains before the wind, and like a rolling
thing before the whirlwind.
[14] And behold at eveningtide trouble; and before the morning he
is not. This is the portion of them that spoil us, and the lot of
them that rob us.

Woe to the Land of Ethiopia
Isaiah 18
Isaiah preaches
against Ethiopia in today's chapter and promises judgment upon this
land because they had allied themselves against God's people, Israel.
Many commentators think this refers to the Upper Nile, above the cataracts
and what is now named Upper Egypt, Nubia, Eritrea and Ethiopia. This
area is extremely arid, almost treeless, rugged mountains. Some of
the poorest people on earth live in this area.
The Coptic
Church in Egypt and Ethiopia has a hierarchical type of church government,
much like the Roman Catholic, except they have their own Bishop and
priests who lead the church. Ethiopia allows several of the main line
denominations to have missionaries in Ethiopia. However, persecution
has become the norm for today to both the Missionary and the Indigenous
Churches.
Tradition
has it that, King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba had "an affair" and
a son was born to her after she left Israel. There are hundreds of
Black Jews that have immigrated to Israel and have been accepted as
Jews, because they claim Jewish blood from Solomon. In the Ethiopian
Jewish Book entitled Teezaza Sanbat (Commandment of the Sabbath),
we read of the creation, but primarily the book is focused on the
greatness and glory of the Sabbath of Israel. The last emperor of
Ethiopia was Halie Salassie, who claimed that he was the "Lion of
the Tribe of Judah." In 1974, Salassie was forced from office; a provisional
government was set up to rule the land. The only problem was that
many of the people of the new government were Islamic and to this
day, there is persecution and unrest throughout the land. In 2003,
hundreds of Christians, both the youth and elderly were imprisoned
and persecuted for their Christian faith. In August 2003, fifty seven
youth were placed in steel over sea shipping containers for bringing
Bibles to a summer military camp and to this date their fate is unknown.
In the future,
when the nations of the world come up against Israel, and the armies
of the North, East and South come, to make war with Israel, Ethiopia
will be included as those from the South.
Isa.18
[1] Woe to the land shadowing with wings, which is beyond the rivers
of Ethiopia:
[2] That sendeth ambassadors by the sea, even in vessels of bulrushes
upon the waters, saying, Go, ye swift messengers, to a nation scattered
and peeled, to a people terrible from their beginning hitherto; a
nation meted out and trodden down, whose land the rivers have spoiled!
[3] All ye inhabitants of the world, and dwellers on the earth, see
ye, when he lifteth up an ensign on the mountains; and when he bloweth
a trumpet, hear ye.
[4] For so the LORD said unto me, I will take my rest, and I will
consider in my dwelling place like a clear heat upon herbs, and like
a cloud of dew in the heat of harvest.
[5] For afore the harvest, when the bud is perfect, and the sour grape
is ripening in the flower, he shall both cut off the sprigs with pruning
hooks, and take away and cut down the branches.
[6] They shall be left together unto the fowls of the mountains, and
to the beasts of the earth: and the fowls shall summer upon them,
and all the beasts of the earth shall winter upon them.
[7] In that time shall the present be brought unto the LORD of hosts
of a people scattered and peeled, and from a people terrible from
their beginning hitherto; a nation meted out and trodden under foot,
whose land the rivers have spoiled, to the place of the name of the
LORD of hosts, the mount Zion.

The Path to Truth
Isaiah 19
In this chapter,
we read about Egypt. Judgment was coming against Egypt from the
Lord. God is pictured as riding on a swift cloud (cf. Pss. 68:4, 33;
104:3). In Canaanite mythology this same idea is used of Baal, the
god of rain and fertility. However, the Lord, not Baal, is the true
Giver of rain (something Egypt would sorely need, Isa. 19:5-10) and
fertility. (1) Although people are free to choose, God sets up
kings and He sets aside kings.
The coming
judgment would cause internal divisions (v. 2) and despair among the
people when they would realize that their gods, only mere idols, and
their occult practices (cf. mediums and... spiritists, 8:19; Lev.
19:31; 20:6) could not save them. Now they would be overtaken by a
cruel master and a fierce king, the Assyrian empire's king. Egypt,
who centuries before had been a cruel master over Israel (Ex. 1:11-14),
would now be the object of cruelty. This Assyrian king was Esarhaddon,
who conquered Egypt in 671 b.c. This judgment would come from the
Lord, the Lord Almighty (Isa. 19:4), Israel's Master and great covenant-keeping
God. (2)
In this chapter,
human history is reversed. In the past Israel looked to Egypt, a type
of the world, for help rather than God. This chapter speaks of a time
when Egypt will look to Jerusalem for help. It is a reference to the
kingdom when the knowledge of God will fill the earth and Jesus will
rule from Jerusalem. God is determined to put down all enemies. Within
the framework of the order of creation this will be accomplished.
It is important to realize that God has limited Himself to certain
principles in His dealings with fallen humanity. Within the framework
of these principles, the day is coming when most in Israel and the
whole earth will embrace truth. At this point, the kingdom will begin.
This pattern is similar to our experience. The best of us don't seek
the truth and find blessing. We turn our own way and in our failure,
stop resisting truth and yield our hearts and lives to God. It is
only then that we come to find great blessing. The same will take
place on this earth relative to humanity as a whole. If we realize
this, we will find it easier to patiently minister to others.

Isa.19
[1] The burden of Egypt. Behold, the LORD rideth upon a swift cloud,
and shall come into Egypt: and the idols of Egypt shall be moved at
his presence, and the heart of Egypt shall melt in the midst of it.
[2] And I will set the Egyptians against the Egyptians: and they shall
fight every one against his brother, and every one against his neighbour;
city against city, and kingdom against kingdom.
[3] And the spirit of Egypt shall fail in the midst thereof; and I
will destroy the counsel thereof: and they shall seek to the idols,
and to the charmers, and to them that have familiar spirits, and to
the wizards.
[4] And the Egyptians will I give over into the hand of a cruel lord;
and a fierce king shall rule over them, saith the Lord, the LORD of
hosts.
[5] And the waters shall fail from the sea, and the river shall be
wasted and dried up.
[6] And they shall turn the rivers far away; and the brooks of defence
shall be emptied and dried up: the reeds and flags shall wither.
[7] The paper reeds by the brooks, by the mouth of the brooks, and
every thing sown by the brooks, shall wither, be driven away, and
be no more.
[8] The fishers also shall mourn, and all they that cast angle into
the brooks shall lament, and they that spread nets upon the waters
shall languish.
[9] Moreover they that work in fine flax, and they that weave networks,
shall be confounded.
[10] And they shall be broken in the purposes thereof, all that make
sluices and ponds for fish.
[11] Surely the princes of Zoan are fools, the counsel of the wise
counsellers of Pharaoh is become brutish: how say ye unto Pharaoh,
I am the son of the wise, the son of ancient kings?
[12] Where are they? where are thy wise men? and let them tell thee
now, and let them know what the LORD of hosts hath purposed upon Egypt.
[13] The princes of Zoan are become fools, the princes of Noph are
deceived; they have also seduced Egypt, even they that are the stay
of the tribes thereof.
[14] The LORD hath mingled a perverse spirit in the midst thereof:
and they have caused Egypt to err in every work thereof, as a drunken
man staggereth in his vomit.
[15] Neither shall there be any work for Egypt, which the head or
tail, branch or rush, may do.
[16] In that day shall Egypt be like unto women: and it shall be afraid
and fear because of the shaking of the hand of the LORD of hosts,
which he shaketh over it.
[17] And the land of Judah shall be a terror unto Egypt, every one
that maketh mention thereof shall be afraid in himself, because of
the counsel of the LORD of hosts, which he hath determined against
it.
[18] In that day shall five cities in the land of Egypt speak the
language of Canaan, and swear to the LORD of hosts; one shall be called,
The city of destruction.
[19] In that day shall there be an altar to the LORD in the midst
of the land of Egypt, and a pillar at the border thereof to the LORD.
[20] And it shall be for a sign and for a witness unto the LORD of
hosts in the land of Egypt: for they shall cry unto the LORD because
of the oppressors, and he shall send them a saviour, and a great one,
and he shall deliver them.
[21] And the LORD shall be known to Egypt, and the Egyptians shall
know the LORD in that day, and shall do sacrifice and oblation; yea,
they shall vow a vow unto the LORD, and perform it.
[22] And the LORD shall smite Egypt: he shall smite and heal it: and
they shall return even to the LORD, and he shall be intreated of them,
and shall heal them.
[23] In that day shall there be a highway out of Egypt to Assyria,
and the Assyrian shall come into Egypt, and the Egyptian into Assyria,
and the Egyptians shall serve with the Assyrians.
[24] In that day shall Israel be the third with Egypt and with Assyria,
even a blessing in the midst of the land:
[25] Whom the LORD of hosts shall bless, saying, Blessed be Egypt
my people, and Assyria the work of my hands, and Israel mine inheritance.

God, or Mammon
Isaiah 20
The picture that
God gives us here in this chapter is one where the people were relying
on another country to protect them instead of God. In the USA, we have
many allies and yes, by God's divine help, our country helps to protect
many nations, including Israel. But we need to understand that God is
able to overrule and overcome them all, including the USA. King David
said, Psa 27:1 The LORD is my light and my salvation; Whom shall
I fear? The LORD is the defense of my life; Whom shall I dread? Our
daily provision and our daily protection comes solely through and from
God Almighty. Psa 28:7 The LORD is my strength and my shield;
My heart trusts in Him, and I am helped; Therefore my heart exults,
And with my song I shall thank Him.
It is interesting
to note how God, somewhat humorously, commands Isaiah to live for three
whole years. He was to go without his outer clothing and he was to walk
barefoot everywhere he went. This signified a picture of what would
come to these protecting nations as an act of utter disgrace and humiliation.
God used this example to teach the Nation of Israel of how the nations
they were counting on to protect them would be after He got finished
with them. In fact that is exactly what happened. Isaiah's nakedness
and bare feet symbolized the coming desolation and shame of Egypt and
Ethiopia at the hands of the Assyrians.
We need to bring
some practical application here. What and whom do people trust in these
days? The answer is clear; houses, jobs, cars, money, investments, government,
the stock market, and self, etc. Stuff! The Scripture is clear. Mat
6:21 for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
This nation has grown fat with indulgence and wealth. Do not be fooled.
Most of us probably fit in to this category somewhere. The key to knowing
what God desires is in repentance and submission; in obedience and living
a godly life. Seriously, how many more days do you have left? No one
knows except for God and sadly, many will stand before Him, judged and
condemned to the Lake of Fire. Few will be saved, even yet as through
fire. God desires all to be saved and that none should perish. After
careful self examination, where do you stand and whom are you trusting
in? Are you ready? Christ is coming soon!
Isa.20
[1] In the year that Tartan came unto Ashdod, (when Sargon the king
of Assyria sent him,) and fought against Ashdod, and took it;
[2] At the same time spake the LORD by Isaiah the son of Amoz, saying,
Go and loose the sackcloth from off thy loins, and put off thy shoe
from thy foot. And he did so, walking naked and barefoot.
[3] And the LORD said, Like as my servant Isaiah hath walked naked and
barefoot three years for a sign and wonder upon Egypt and upon Ethiopia;
[4] So shall the king of Assyria lead away the Egyptians prisoners,
and the Ethiopians captives, young and old, naked and barefoot, even
with their buttocks uncovered, to the shame of Egypt.
[5] And they shall be afraid and ashamed of Ethiopia their expectation,
and of Egypt their glory.
[6] And the inhabitant of this isle shall say in that day, Behold, such
is our expectation, whither we flee for help to be delivered from the
king of Assyria: and how shall we escape?

Nations are a Creation of God
Isaiah 21:1-16
Isaiah referred to the "desert of the sea" and
it's possible he was referring to the great desert between the Euphrates
and the Jordan Rivers. He speaks of the fall of Babylon and other kingdoms
that have reaped destruction and now lie buried under the sands of time.
These long forgotten kingdoms are representative of the wrath of God upon
nations that neglect and forget God. When the Lord lifts His hands of
blessing from a nation, destruction comes as a whirlwind either from without
or within. God may consume a people with drought, floods, earthquakes
or a multitude of other sources He has at hand. We need to remember that
all nature is subject to the will of God and that it obeys Him without
hesitation. It would do well for all people to look at history and see
that a time comes when God says, "Enough is enough." Nebuchadnezzar proclaimed
the following after eating grass in the field for seven years and his
reason returned to him in Daniel 4:32, " the most High ruleth in
the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever He wills."
A nation is a creation of God even as an individual
person is a product of God's creation. What forethought, what wisdom has
been required for the planning of a nation! God brought God-fearing people
from Western Europe to a new land; God had a design for America long before
its discovery in 1492. God brought persecuted, chosen people to the colonies
and special leadership to form a government of the people and by the people.
The God-given freedoms we American's share today are because God fearing
men who believed in prayer and honoring God were our first leaders. However,
in the last half of the 20th century we have been in the process
of removing God from every facet of our society. America is already seeing
anarchy by judges and civil leaders.
There are two actions that can stop this tide
of disobedience to the laws of the land, and anarchy will be shut down:
1) By Christians getting on their knees and
seeking revival (and let it begin with me!).
2) By becoming involved in the political arena
and standing for the faith delivered to the fathers.
By praying and getting involved, we can thwart
the destruction that is at the threshold of our wonderful nation and restore
some "age old values" to our society.
Isa.21
[1] The burden of the desert of the sea. As whirlwinds in the south pass
through; so it cometh from the desert, from a terrible land.
[2] A grievous vision is declared unto me; the treacherous dealer dealeth
treacherously, and the spoiler spoileth. Go up, O Elam: besiege, O Media;
all the sighing thereof have I made to cease.
[3] Therefore are my loins filled with pain: pangs have taken hold upon
me, as the pangs of a woman that travaileth: I was bowed down at the hearing
of it; I was dismayed at the seeing of it.
[4] My heart panted, fearfulness affrighted me: the night of my pleasure
hath he turned into fear unto me.
[5] Prepare the table, watch in the watchtower, eat, drink: arise, ye
princes, and anoint the shield.
[6] For thus hath the Lord said unto me, Go, set a watchman, let him declare
what he seeth.
[7] And he saw a chariot with a couple of horsemen, a chariot of asses,
and a chariot of camels; and he hearkened diligently with much heed:
[8] And he cried, A lion: My lord, I stand continually upon the watchtower
in the daytime, and I am set in my ward whole nights:
[9] And, behold, here cometh a chariot of men, with a couple of horsemen.
And he answered and said, Babylon is fallen, is fallen; and all the graven
images of her gods he hath broken unto the ground.
[10] O my threshing, and the corn of my floor: that which I have heard
of the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, have I declared unto you.
[11] The burden of Dumah. He calleth to me out of Seir, Watchman, what
of the night? Watchman, what of the night?
[12] The watchman said, The morning cometh, and also the night: if ye
will inquire, inquire ye: return, come.
[13] The burden upon Arabia. In the forest in Arabia shall ye lodge, O
ye travelling companies of Dedanim.
[14] The inhabitants of the land of Tema brought water to him that was
thirsty, they prevented with their bread him that fled.
[15] For they fled from the swords, from the drawn sword, and from the
bent bow, and from the grievousness of war.
[16] For thus hath the Lord said unto me, Within a year, according to
the years of an hireling, and all the glory of Kedar shall fail:
[17] And the residue of the number of archers, the mighty men of the children
of Kedar, shall be diminished: for the LORD God of Israel hath spoken
it.

We Reap as We Sow
Isaiah 22
In this chapter,
we read a message of Judgment on Jerusalem. Often Jerusalem is referred
to as a mountain (e.g., Mount Zion), but here the city is called a valley.
This also fits because a valley-the Kidron-runs between two hills directly
east of the city. From this city God was revealing Himself to Isaiah;
hence it was called the Valley of Vision.
(1) As the Assyrians
conquered the Northern Kingdom, the time came when they besieged Jerusalem.
Jerusalem
was being besieged and the people inside the walls could do nothing
about it. The people realized that the enemy's advancing to the very
walls of Jerusalem was a day of judgment brought on by the Lord, the
Lord Almighty (cf. vv. 12, 14-15, 25). The attack was not happenstance;
it had come because of the people's disobedience (cf. vv. 12-14). In
the city people were in tumult and terror as they saw the enemy camped
outside waiting for an opportunity to get inside to sack and burn the
city (v. 5).
(2)When
faced with such a difficult circumstance, what would the people do?
They should have turned their hearts from sin to God. Sadly, they did
not. One would think that in such a precarious position the nation
would turn back to God and repent. Obviously the city could not deliver
itself (v. 8a). However, in their sinful condition the people still
tried to do things their own way. When the people saw the enemy
they should have repented, realizing they were helpless before the Assyrians.
Pulling out their hair (cf. Ezra 9:3; Neh. 13:25) and wearing sackcloth
(cf. comments on Isa. 3:24) were signs of mourning. But instead of mourning
(22:12) the Jerusalemites "lived it up" in revelry (cf. v. 2), banqueting,
and wine-drinking in the face of their impending death (tomorrow we
die, v. 13). They did not believe God was powerful enough to save them
and to follow through on His promises. Therefore a pronouncement of
woe came to the people through Isaiah: this sin of lack of trust in
the Lord would not be atoned for.
(3) Even though
God in His grace spared the people this time because of King Hezekiah,
the nation still came to destruction. In the end, there is no substitute
for a righteous heart.
(1) (2) (3) Walvoord, John F., and Zuck, Roy
B., The Bible Knowledge Commentary, (Wheaton, Illinois: Scripture
Press Publications, Inc.) 1983, 1985.
Isa.22
[1] The burden of the valley of vision. What aileth thee now, that thou
art wholly gone up to the housetops?
[2] Thou that art full of stirs, a tumultuous city, a joyous city: thy
slain men are not slain with the sword, nor dead in battle.
[3] All thy rulers are fled together, they are bound by the archers:
all that are found in thee are bound together, which have fled from
far.
[4] Therefore said I, Look away from me; I will weep bitterly, labour
not to comfort me, because of the spoiling of the daughter of my people.
[5] For it is a day of trouble, and of treading down, and of perplexity
by the Lord GOD of hosts in the valley of vision, breaking down the
walls, and of crying to the mountains.
[6] And Elam bare the quiver with chariots of men and horsemen, and
Kir uncovered the shield.
[7] And it shall come to pass, that thy choicest valleys shall be full
of chariots, and the horsemen shall set themselves in array at the gate.
[8] And he discovered the covering of Judah, and thou didst look in
that day to the armour of the house of the forest.
[9] Ye have seen also the breaches of the city of David, that they are
many: and ye gathered together the waters of the lower pool.
[10] And ye have numbered the houses of Jerusalem, and the houses have
ye broken down to fortify the wall.
[11] Ye made also a ditch between the two walls for the water of the
old pool: but ye have not looked unto the maker thereof, neither had
respect unto him that fashioned it long ago.
[12] And in that day did the Lord GOD of hosts call to weeping, and
to mourning, and to baldness, and to girding with sackcloth:
[13] And behold joy and gladness, slaying oxen, and killing sheep, eating
flesh, and drinking wine: let us eat and drink; for to morrow we shall
die.
[14] And it was revealed in mine ears by the LORD of hosts, Surely this
iniquity shall not be purged from you till ye die, saith the Lord GOD
of hosts.
[15] Thus saith the Lord GOD of hosts, Go, get thee unto this treasurer,
even unto Shebna, which is over the house, and say,
[16] What hast thou here? and whom hast thou here, that thou hast hewed
thee out a sepulchre here, as he that heweth him out a sepulchre on
high, and that graveth an habitation for himself in a rock?
[17] Behold, the LORD will carry thee away with a mighty captivity,
and will surely cover thee.
[18] He will surely violently turn and toss thee like a ball into a
large country: there shalt thou die, and there the chariots of thy glory
shall be the shame of thy lord's house.
[19] And I will drive thee from thy station, and from thy state shall
he pull thee down.
[20] And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will call my servant
Eliakim the son of Hilkiah:
[21] And I will clothe him with thy robe, and strengthen him with thy
girdle, and I will commit thy government into his hand: and he shall
be a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to the house of Judah.
[22] And the key of the house of David will I lay upon his shoulder;
so he shall open, and none shall shut; and he shall shut, and none shall
open.
[23] And I will fasten him as a nail in a sure place; and he shall be
for a glorious throne to his father's house.
[24] And they shall hang upon him all the glory of his father's house,
the offspring and the issue, all vessels of small quantity, from the
vessels of cups, even to all the vessels of flagons.
[25] In that day, saith the LORD of hosts, shall the nail that is fastened
in the sure place be removed, and be cut down, and fall; and the burden
that was upon it shall be cut off: for the LORD hath spoken it.

Desolation and Destruction
Isaiah 23
God is Love,
God is merciful, God is gracious, God is forgiving, and God is longsuffering.
But God is also righteous and just and He must punish sin! There is
an end to presuming upon God's grace and mercy. There are consequences
for sin. There is judgment that will take place in God's perfect timing
for all those who are disobedient. Time after time, God desired obedience
from His chosen people Israel. Time after time they directly disobeyed
God and did their own things and went their own ways instead. Eze
33:11 "Say to them, 'As I live!' declares the Lord GOD, 'I take no
pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that the wicked turn
from his way and live. Turn back, turn back from your evil ways! Why
then will you die, O house of Israel?'
Gal 6:7-8. Do not be deceived, God is not
mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap. For the one
who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the
one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. It's
your choice!
Isa.23
[1] The burden of Tyre. Howl, ye ships of Tarshish; for it is laid waste,
so that there is no house, no entering in: from the land of Chittim
it is revealed to them.
[2] Be still, ye inhabitants of the isle; thou whom the merchants of
Zidon, that pass over the sea, have replenished.
[3] And by great waters the seed of Sihor, the harvest of the river,
is her revenue; and she is a mart of nations.
[4] Be thou ashamed, O Zidon: for the sea hath spoken, even the strength
of the sea, saying, I travail not, nor bring forth children, neither
do I nourish up young men, nor bring up virgins.
[5] As at the report concerning Egypt, so shall they be sorely pained
at the report of Tyre.
[6] Pass ye over to Tarshish; howl, ye inhabitants of the isle.
[7] Is this your joyous city, whose antiquity is of ancient days? her
own feet shall carry her afar off to sojourn.
[8] Who hath taken this counsel against Tyre, the crowning city, whose
merchants are princes, whose traffickers are the honourable of the earth?
[9] The LORD of hosts hath purposed it, to stain the pride of all glory,
and to bring into contempt all the honourable of the earth.
[10] Pass through thy land as a river, O daughter of Tarshish: there
is no more strength.
[11] He stretched out his hand over the sea, he shook the kingdoms:
the LORD hath given a commandment against the merchant city, to destroy
the strong holds thereof.
[12] And he said, Thou shalt no more rejoice, O thou oppressed virgin,
daughter of Zidon: arise, pass over to Chittim; there also shalt thou
have no rest.
[13] Behold the land of the Chaldeans; this people was not, till the
Assyrian founded it for them that dwell in the wilderness: they set
up the towers thereof, they raised up the palaces thereof; and he brought
it to ruin.
[14] Howl, ye ships of Tarshish: for your strength is laid waste.
[15] And it shall come to pass in that day, that Tyre shall be forgotten
seventy years, according to the days of one king: after the end of seventy
years shall Tyre sing as an harlot.
[16] Take an harp, go about the city, thou harlot that hast been forgotten;
make sweet melody, sing many songs, that thou mayest be remembered.
[17] And it shall come to pass after the end of seventy years, that
the LORD will visit Tyre, and she shall turn to her hire, and shall
commit fornication with all the kingdoms of the world upon the face
of the earth.
[18] And her merchandise and her hire shall be holiness to the LORD:
it shall not be treasured nor laid up; for her merchandise shall be
for them that dwell before the LORD, to eat sufficiently, and for durable
clothing.
