Daniel's Prophecy of the Seventy Weeks
Optional Scripture Reading-- Daniel 9: 20-27,
(included below)
In the book of Daniel, we find a chronology
of the nation Israel from the restoration from captivity in Babylon
to the second coming of Jesus Christ. If you study this section of the
book of Daniel, you will find that there is a gap between the crucifixion
of Jesus Christ and the last week of seventieth week . Jesus called
this gap in time, the times of the Gentiles. It is a time according
to the book of Acts, when...God...is visiting the Gentiles,
to take out of them a people for his name. 15:14. It
is a time when Jesus said, Jerusalem shall be trodden down of
the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled. Luke
21:24. And Jerusalem is indeed a trouble spot in the Mideast peace
process.
This gap in the history of Israel is a
time when God is at work to build the church of both Jew and Gentile.
The church will end when ...we which are alive and remain shall
be caught up together... to meet the Lord in the air:...I
Thessalonians 4:17. All that remains of God's plan and purpose for
Israel prior to the second coming of Jesus Christ is this seventieth
week. This time is also known as the time of Jacob's trouble and the
tribulation. According to this prophecy in the book of Daniel this is
a seven year period of time.
There are no signs of times given to the
church. We know not the day or the hour when the times of the Gentiles
will end. The nation Israel is God's prophetic clock. For us the message
is simply watch and pray; for ye know not then the time is.
Mark 13:33.
Daniel 9: 20-27. And whiles I was
speaking, and praying, and confessing my sin and the sin of my people
Israel, and presenting my supplication before the LORD my God for the
holy mountain of my God; Yea, whiles I was speaking in prayer, even
the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being
caused to fly swiftly, touched me about the time of the evening oblation.
And he informed me, and talked with me, and said, O Daniel, I am now
come forth to give thee skill and understanding. At the beginning of
thy supplications the commandment came forth, and I am come to shew
thee; for thou art greatly beloved: therefore understand the matter,
and consider the vision. Seventy
weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish
the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation
for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal
up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy. Know therefore
and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore
and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks,
and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the
wall, even in troublous times. And after threescore and two weeks shall
Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince
that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end
thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations
are determined. And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one
week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and
the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he
shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined
shall be poured upon the desolate.

Introduction to the Seven Churches
Optional Scripture Reading--Revelation
chapter one
John, receiving his vision from the Lord
on the Isle of Patmos, was instructed to write the things which he had
seen, and send them to the seven churches which are located in Asia.
Much will be said about these seven churches individually in the following
days.
Many believe that these seven churches
represent seven periods of church history dating from the time of Christ's
death to the present day. As we look back on history, there does seem
to be much evidence to support this theory. However, we much not forget
that all seven churches did exist in the same time period as the Apostle
John, and they all exist in our day even now. We must be careful and
certain that our church does not fall into the category of being displeasing
to God.
As we look at each church we will notice
that the message of each letter is structured in a set pattern:
-
The church and city are identified.
- Christ's character is revealed.
- The church is commended (except Sardis and Laodicea)
- Compromise is condemned (Except Smyrna and Philadelphia).
- The church is counseled.
- There is a call to commitment.
- Compensation is promised to overcomers. (David M.
Levy)
Steven Larson wrote churches are like people. No two
are alike. Each has its own personality...size and shape...and weakness.
As we look at these churches, what a challenge to us individually to open
our hearts and compare ourselves with each church to find out which one
we identify with most?
Revelation 1:3. Blessed is he that
readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those
things which are written therein: for the time is at hand.

No Signs Before Rapture of Church!
Optional Scripture Reading: Matthew 28: 16-20,
(included below)
...Wilt thou at this time restore
again the kingdom to Israel? And he said unto them, It is not for you
to know the times or other seasons, which the Father hath put in his
own power. Acts 1: 6-7. The Apostles being Jews were looking
for signs just as the Jews had always sought signs. The Church was not
born until Pentecost and that was several weeks after this conversation.
And this gospel of the kingdom shall be
preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall
the end come. Matthew 24:14.
When I was a youngster, I had no idea how
the two witnesses in Revelation 11 could be revealed to the whole world,
but in 1948 I saw my first TV. It was primitive according to what is
available today. Than day I knew the answer to: And when they
shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of
the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them,
and kill them. And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the
great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also
our Lord was crucified. And they of the people and kindreds and tongues
and nations shall see their dead bodies three days and an half, and
shall not suffer their dead bodies to be put in graves. And they that
dwell upon the earth shall rejoice over them, and make merry, and shall
send gifts one to another; because these two prophets tormented them
that dwelt on the earth. And after three days and an half the spirit
of life from God entered into them, and they stood upon their feet;
and great fear fell upon them which saw them. And they heard a great
voice from heaven saying unto them, Come up hither. And they ascended
up to heaven in a cloud; and their enemies beheld them. Revelation
11:7-12.
The 20th century brought in the electronic
age: Radios were popular from the 30's to the 50's; television from
the 1950's to today; and now the international satellites and the computer
internet age. The third world countries have access to every form of
modern communication; radio, television, computers international email
and satellite phones. It's no problem to send pictures all around the
world in milliseconds. Yes, all prophecies concerning the propagation
of the Gospel are fulfilled, the Lord's coming is imminent.
Matthew 28: 16-20. Then
the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, into a mountain where Jesus
had appointed them. And when they saw him, they worshipped him: but
some doubted. And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power
is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach
all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son,
and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever
I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end
of the world. Amen.

The Antichrist
Optional Scripture Reading 2 Thessalonians 2:1-17
While we are warned that there will appear
from time to time evil men in the world--so evil that they may be called
antichrists Little children, it is the last time; and ye have heard
that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby
we know that it is the last time. 1 John 2:18. This person is the personification
of evil and the culmination of all that is opposed to God. (CC Ryrie).
The anti is "a prefix meaning against, opposed to." (Dictionary)
This one is against and opposed to Jesus Christ.
His deeds:
- He will appear in the end time as the head of the Gentile
powers in their ten kingdom federation. He rules over the nations in
his federation with absolute authority. Daniel 11:36.
- His chief interest is in might and power. Daniel
11:38.
- He makes a 7 year covenant with Israel which is broken
after three and one half years. Daniel 9:27.
- He introduces an idolatrous worship in which he sets
himself up as god. Daniel 11:36-7; 2 Thessalonians 2:4; Revelation
13:5.
- He is energized by Satan and receives his authority
from him. Ezekial 28:2, 9-12; Daniel 8:25; Revelation 13:4.
- He becomes a great adversary of Israel. Daniel 7:21,25;
8:24; Revelation 13:7.
- He will furnish his own brand of religion to the world
and require men to accept it on penalty of death. He opposes God and
will exalt himself above God or anything that is call God. 2 Thessalonians
2:4-5.
- Paul describes his doom and destruction by the sovereign
and almighty power of God. 2 Thessalonians 2:8.

if he is headed in the right direction. (The Lifeline)

Watch and Pray
Optional Scripture Reading: 1 Thessalonians
5: 1-11, (included below)
We find again and again where God's people
are admonished to be ready for the end. In other words, we ought to
live our lives in such a way that if Jesus were to come, we would not
be ashamed. We would be ready.
I can think of times in my life as a believer
that I am glad the Lord did not come. Indeed if I could pick a good
time, I would think that when I am preaching or teaching that would
be a good time. At these times, I try and be sure that there is nothing
between ma and God. I try and make sure that I am full of the Holy Spirit.
Yes, this would be a good time.
What might be a bad time? I remember once
the church was paying off some bonds early. This caused confusion with
the bank. The bank did not have local service in this area, so I had
to play the punch the numbers game. It would have helped a lot
if I could have at least talked to the same person twice. A few hours
of this, and it is easy to descend in attitude and even behavior to
the level of a lost person. All the joy can leave your heart, and wrath
malice and anger takes its place. I believe it was for times like this
that God warned us to be ready and watch and pray. God knows that the
spirit is very willing but the flesh is all too weak. Not forsaking
the assembling of yourselves together, ...and so much the more, as ye
see the day approaching. Hebrews 10:25. When the end comes,
it would be a good time to be found faithful in church.
1 Thessalonians 5: 1-11.
But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that
I write unto you. For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the
Lord so cometh as a thief in the night. For when they shall say, Peace
and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon
a woman with child; and they shall not escape. But ye, brethren, are
not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief. Ye are
all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of
the night, nor of darkness. Therefore let us not sleep, as do others;
but let us watch and be sober. For they that sleep sleep in the night;
and they that be drunken are drunken in the night. But let us, who are
of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love;
and for an helmet, the hope of salvation. For God hath not appointed
us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ, Who died
for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with
him. Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even
as also ye do.

The Church at Ephesus
Optional Scripture Reading: Revelation
2: 1-7
If the church of Ephesus were to represent
a specific period in time, then scholars say that it would most likely
fit in the time frame of AD 70-170. Let us not forget that this church
was also an actual church in John's day.
To this church Christ revels Himself as
the one who holdeth the seven stars in his right hand, who walketh
in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks; Revelation 2:1. Then
Christ goes on to say, I know thy works, and thy labour, and thy
patience, and how thou canst not bear them which are evil: and thou
hast tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found
them liars: Revelation 2:2. Here Christ was commending them
for the work which they once did. In verse 4 He condemns them
because thou hast left thy first love. Notice here that
they had left and lost their first love. It may even be that Christ
had their hands and head but not their hearts. Christ then calls them
to remember what they were once like. It is quite possible that this
Church had lost its joy in serving Jesus. Our Lord then calls them to
repent and repeat the works which they once did. If the church refused
the commandment of the Lord, then he promised to remove their candlestick.
No longer would they be a light to the world.
Could it be possible that this church shows
signs and characteristics of what we are truly like. Does God have our
heads and hands but not our hearts? Have we left our first love and
lost the joy of our salvation?
Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch
as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do
honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear
toward me is taught by the precept of men: Isaiah 29:13.
Revelation 2: 1-7. Unto the angel
of the church of Ephesus write; These things saith he that holdeth the
seven stars in his right hand, who walketh in the midst of the seven
golden candlesticks; I know thy works, and thy labour, and thy patience,
and how thou canst not bear them which are evil: and thou hast tried
them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars:
And hast borne, and hast patience, and for my name's sake hast laboured,
and hast not fainted. Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because
thou hast left thy first love. Remember therefore from whence thou art
fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto
thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except
thou repent. But this thou hast, that thou hatest the deeds of the Nicolaitanes,
which I also hate. He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit
saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of
the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God.

The Pretribulation Rapture
Optional Scripture Reading: Acts 1:9-11,
I Thessalonians 4: 14-18
The key to understanding Scripture is to
take it literally, not allegorically. Allegorical, means "to
tell a story in which people, things, and happenings have another meaning,
as in a fable or parable. Using a story to explain a truth."
(Webster). The simple secret of "Fundamental Bible Study and Teaching"
is to accept the Scriptures as literally as possible. Remember, Jesus
used parables, but in every case He identified the teaching as a parable.
When we speak of the "Rapture"
or catching away, or being caught up, we are speaking of the Return
of the Lord as recorded in Acts 1: 9-11.And when he
had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud
received him out of their sight. And while they looked stedfastly toward
heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel;
Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven?
this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come
in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven. Then we read:
In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for
the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible,
and we shall be changed. I Corinthians 15:52. Believers--dead
and alive-- shall be caught up together meeting the Lord in the air
to be with Him forever. Jacob's Trouble is recorded in
Jeremiah 30:7. Alas! for that day is great, so that none is like
it: it is even the time of Jacob's trouble, but he shall be saved out
of it. Nothing is said in Scripture as to the Church going through
Jacob's Trouble.
The Rapture of the church is "imminent,"
at any moment. We should never use the term, "He is coming soon"
because in so doing, there are those who will be begging the question
as to "How soon is soon?"
James speaks of the rapture in James
5: 8-9...Be ye also patient; stablish
your hearts: for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh. Grudge not one
against another, brethren, lest ye be condemned: behold, the judge standeth
before the door.
Paul gives us the best explanation in I
Thessalonians 4:14-18. For if we believe that Jesus died and
rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with
him. For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which
are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them
which are asleep. For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with
a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God:
and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and
remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet
the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. Wherefore
comfort one another with these words.
Lastly: Let
not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In
my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have
told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a
place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that
where I am, there ye may be also. John
14:1-3.

Marriage of the Lamb
Optional Scripture Reading: Revelation
19: 1-9
In many New Testament passages the relation
between Christ and the Church is revealed by the use of the figures
of the bridegroom and the bride.
-
John 3:29.
- Romans 7:4.
- 2 Corinthians 11:2.
- Ephesians 5: 25-33.
- Revelation 19:7-8.
- Revelation 21:1-22:7
"At the translation of the church Christ is appearing
as a bridegroom to take His bride unto Himself, so that the relationship
that was pledged might be consummated and that the two might become one."
(JD Pentecost).
A study of Scripture reveals that the time of the marriage
falls "between the translation of the church and the second advent.
Prior to the rapture the church is still anticipating this union. According
to Revelation 19:7 this marriage has taken place at the time of
the second advent. The marriage of the Lamb is come. The
aorist tense, elthen, translated is come, signifies a completed
act, showing us that the marriage has been consummated. This marriage
is seen to follow the events of the bema (judgment seat) of Christ...Thus
the marriage itself must be placed between the judgment seat of Christ
and the second advent." (Pentecost).
The only place this marriage can take place is in heaven.
Philippians 3:20. "No other location would fit a heavenly people."
(Pentecost). Those who participate in the marriage can only be Christ
and the church, the true believers.
The only reference to the Marriage Supper of the Lamb
is found in Revelation 19:9 Blessed are they which are called
unto the marriage supper of the Lamb..Where and when it takes
place is a good subject for debate.
Thought: While some books inform, and others reform,
only the Bible can transform. (The Lifeline)

The Command to Occupy
Optional Scripture Reading: 2 Thessalonians
1: 1-12
Throughout history people have given
way to foolishness concerning the end of the age. Jesus himself warned
us For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and
shall deceive many. And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars:
see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass,
but the end is not yet. For nation shall rise against nation, and
kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences,
and earthquakes, in divers places. All these are the beginning of
sorrows. Then shall they deliver
you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated
of all nations for my name's sake. And then shall many be offended,
and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another. And many
false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many. And because iniquity
shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold. 13 But he that shall
endure unto the end, the same shall be saved. And this gospel of the
kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all
nations; and then shall the end come. When ye therefore shall see
the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand
in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:) Then let them
which be in Judaea flee into the mountains: Let him which is on the
housetop not come down to take any thing out of his house: Neither
let him which is in the field return back to take his clothes. And
woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those
days! But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on
the sabbath day: For then shall be great tribulation, such as was
not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall
be. And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh
be saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened.
Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there;
believe it not. For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets,
and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were
possible, they shall deceive the very elect. Behold, I have told you
before. Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the
desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe
it not. For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even
unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. For
wheresoever the carcase is, there will the eagles be gathered together.
Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened,
and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from
heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: And then shall
appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the
tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming
in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. Matthew
24: 5-30.
The enemy cannot change these dramatic
events. They have been set by God. All that the enemy can do is try
and bring confusion to peoples' minds about the time and nature of
this event. This happened very early in the
history of the church. At the church at Thessalonica some people came
to believe that the end had come. They quit business as usual and
were waiting for the end. God would not have us get caught up in this
kind of foolishness. In His parable about the end of the age Jesus
said, Occupy till I come. Luke 19:13. The word
here means to conduct business as usual until Jesus comes. This is
what we need to be doing.

The Church of Smyrna
Optional Scripture Reading: Revelation
2: 8-11, (included below)
The Smyrna Period dated from 170-312. During
this period in time Christians suffered great persecution as did the
actual church of Smyrna in John's day.
Once again Jesus starts his message by
revealing who He is; the first and the last, which was dead, and
is alive; Revelation 2:8. The title that Christ chose is fitting
and encouraging. As this church faces persecution and possible death,
hope is offered. Though Christ was dead, He is now alive, and though
our bodies may see death 2 Corinthians 5:8 tells us to be
absent from the body, is to be present with the Lord.
In verse nine Jesus says I know thy
works, and tribulation and poverty, (but thou art rich). Though
this church went through great persecution and didn't have much, Christ
said but thou art rich. These riches are most likely in
spiritual blessings. It is interesting that this church is one of only
two in which there is nothing negative mentioned about it. This is a
church that is pleasing to God. As we compare this church to ourselves,
is God pleased with us? Have we suffered persecution for Him? 2 Timothy
3:12 says Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus
shall suffer persecution.
Isaiah 41:10. Fear thou not; for
I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God; I will strengthen
thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right
hand of my righteousness.
Revelation 2: 8-11. And unto the
angel of the church in Smyrna write; These things saith the first and
the last, which was dead, and is alive; I know thy works,
and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy
of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue
of Satan. Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold,
the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried;
and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death,
and I will give thee a crown of life. He that hath an ear, let him hear
what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that overcometh shall not
be hurt of the second death.

The Midtribulation Rapture
Optional Scripture Reading: Jeremiah
30: 1-9, (included below)
For many years Norman B. Harrison, a professor
at Bethel College and Seminary, St. Paul, MN, and one of his students,
Dr. Leroy Gager, one of my professors at Northwestern College, Minneapolis,
MN, taught the midtribulation rapture.
These and many other men arrived at this
conclusion because they were convinced that the seven seals and the
first six trumpets were man's and Satan's wrath rather than the wrath
of God. Also, because they believed the last generation of the church
was to suffer tribulation as did the first generation. Yea, and
all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.
2Timothy 3:12.
They believed the
trumpet in I Corinthians 15:52 In a moment, in the twinkling
of an eye, at the last trump; for the trumpet shall sound,
and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed
is the seventh trumpet as recorded in Revelation 11:15,18
And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in
heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of
our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever. .
.18 And the nations were angry, and thy wrath is come, and the time
of the dead, that they should be judged, and that thou shouldest give
reward unto thy servants the prophets, and to the saints, and them that
fear thy name, small and great; and shouldest destroy them which destroy
the earth. They believe the seventh trumpet heralds the Great
Tribulation and the wrath of God o the earth. In other words nothing
preceding the seventh trumpet heralds the Great Tribulation and the
wrath of God on the earth. In other words nothing preceding the seventh
trumpet judgment is considered God's wrath.
One thing to their credit, they do believe
the Rapture of the church and Christ's second coming are two separate
events. The two above mentioned men are in heaven today and me thinks
they have had their theology corrected.
Jeremiah 30: 1-9.
The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying,
Thus speaketh the LORD God of Israel, saying, Write thee all the words
that I have spoken unto thee in a book. 3 For, lo, the days come, saith
the LORD, that I will bring again the captivity of my people Israel
and Judah, saith the LORD: and I will cause them to return to the land
that I gave to their fathers, and they shall possess it. And these are
the words that the LORD spake concerning Israel and concerning Judah. For
thus saith the LORD; We have heard a voice of trembling, of fear, and
not of peace. Ask ye now, and see whether a man doth travail with child?
wherefore do I see every man with his hands on his loins, as a woman
in travail, and all faces are turned into paleness? 7 Alas! for that
day is great, so that none is like it: it is even the time of Jacob's
trouble, but he shall be saved out of it. For it shall come to pass
in that day, saith the LORD of hosts, that I will break his yoke from
off thy neck, and will burst thy bonds, and strangers shall no more
serve themselves of him: But they shall serve the LORD their God, and
David their king, whom I will raise up unto them.

The Judgment Seat of Christ
Optional Scripture Reading: I Corinthians
3:9-15, (included below)
We often hear the statement that "God
is a god of Love" and this is very true. John wrote, God
is love. IJohn 4:8. But we also need to remember that god is
a God of judgment. We are dealing here with one aspect of God's judgment.
We read about it in 2Corinthians 5:10 For we must all appear
before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things
done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good
or bad. It is also in Romans 14:10-12. But
why dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost thou set at nought thy
brother? for we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ.
For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to
me, and every tongue shall confess to God. So then every one of us shall
give account of himself to God.
The word is bema and it refers to
a "raised place mounted by steps; a platform; tribune; used as
the official seat of a judge." (Thayer). " Associated with
this word are the ideas of prominence, dignity, authority, honor, and
reward rather the idea of justice and judgment." (Pentecost). This
is seen in Acts 18: 12,16. And when Gallio was the deputy
of Achaia, the Jews made insurrection with one accord against Paul,
and brought him to the judgment seat,... And he drave them from
the judgment seat. Then all the Greeks took Sosthenes, the chief
ruler of the synagogue, and beat him before the judgment seat...
When will Christ's judgment seat be? "We
believe this event takes place immediately following the translation
of the church from earth to heaven. It is a rewarding of believers and
must take place in the heavenlies. The Judge will be Jesus Christ as
scripture makes it clear it will be before the Son of God." (Pentecost)
For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment
unto the Son: John 5:22.
Who will appear at the judgment? "There
can be little doubt that the bema of Christ is concerned only with believers.
The basis of examination will not be whether one is saved or not, but
the believer's works will be brought into the lime light. Are they acceptable
or worthless? The purpose is not to chasten His child for his sins but
to reward for service." (Pentecost?).
Thought: Too many spend time counting
the cost of following Christ when they should consider the cost of not
following Him.
I Corinthians 3: 9-15. For we are
labourers together with God: ye are God's husbandry, ye are God's building.
According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder,
I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every
man take heed how he buildeth thereupon. For other foundation can no
man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if any man build
upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble;
Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it,
because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's
work of what sort it is. If any man's work abide which he hath built
thereupon, he shall receive a reward. If any man's work shall be burned,
he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.

The 144,000 Sealed Jews
Optional Scripture Reading: Revelation
14
We read about 144,000 Jews, twelve thousand
that shall be sealed from each tribe in the book of Revelation. It is
not altogether clear what is involved here. But what does seem clear
is that these people will be specially preserved by God and shall survive
the great tribulation to the second coming of Jesus Christ.
Under the Old Covenant some were indwelled
by the Holy Spirit for a special purpose. Usually this purpose involved
some type of leadership. Under the Old Covenant, these were usually
the prophets, priests or kings. There were others but this was the norm.
So it is that I believe that these men will have some important leadership
function. We see no indication whatsoever that these people have any
kind of political leadership role, so I tend to think their role involves
important spiritual leadership.
The imagery of Revelation is that of a
great harvest. There is a great harvest of God's judgment in this chapter.
And another angel came out of the temple, crying with a loud voice
to him that sat on the cloud, Thrust in thy sickle, and reap: for the
time is come for thee to reap; for the harvest of the earth is ripe.
Revelation 14:15. The description is of the battle of Armageddon.
It is an unimaginable terrible bloody battle when blood came out
of the winepress, even unto the horse bridles...Revelation
14:20.
But tucked away in this chapter is also
a message of hope. In the midst of this terrible judgment, the gospel
will go forth them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation,
and kindred, and tongue, and people, Revelation 14:6.
As the enemy is working hard to kill every believer, I can't
help but believe that this spread of the gospel is the work of the 144,000.

The Church of Pergamos
Optional Scripture Reading: Revelation
2: 12-47, (included below)
Hebrews 4: 12-13 says For
the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged
sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and
of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents
of the heart. Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in
his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him
with whom we have to do. It is interesting that Christ identifies
Himself to the church of Pergamos as He which hath the sharp sword
with two edges. Revelation 2:12. Then we
go on to see how this church is naked and open to the eyes of the Lord.
He sees the good and the bad. He starts off by telling them that He
has seen their good works. Thou holdest fast my name, and hast not denied
my faith. Christ also saw the bad and confronted them with it. He (Christ)
was not pleased with the teaching of the doctrine of Balaam and the
doctrine of the Nicolaitanes. Balaam goes back to the book of Numbers
where he tries to corrupt the children of Israel through mixed marriages.
Nicolaitanes professed Christ but taught freedom to live without moral
law. It very well could have been that Pergamos was having more of an
impact on the church rather than the church having an impact on Pergamos.
As the eyes of the Lord look down upon
us, what are the works that He sees? In which aspect do we identify
with this church? Are we holding fast the name of Christ? Is the world
having more of an impact on us than we are having on the world?
Revelation 2: 12-17 And to
the angel of the church in Pergamos write; These things saith he which
hath the sharp sword with two edges; I know thy works, and where thou
dwellest, even where Satan's seat is: and thou holdest fast my name,
and hast not denied my faith, even in those days wherein Antipas was
my faithful martyr, who was slain among you, where Satan dwelleth. But
I have a few things against thee, because thou hast there them that
hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balac to cast a stumblingblock
before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed unto idols,
and to commit fornication. So hast thou also them that hold the doctrine
of the Nicolaitanes, which thing I hate. Repent; or else I will come
unto thee quickly, and will fight against them with the sword of my
mouth. He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto
the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden
manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name
written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it.

The Posttribulation Rapture View
Optional Scripture Reading: I Corinthians
15:50-58, (included below)
The posttribulation rapture is a belief
held by many Christians today. They believe the church will go through
Daniel's seventieth week and then be raptured. They hold the Rapture
and Second Coming to be one and the same.
Posttribulation teachers consider events
as recorded in the Bible not to be literal, because the church has
always gone through tribulation. Others teach the church is in the
tribulation now, and some prophecies are yet to be fulfilled. Therefore
the Rapture and Second Coming are not imminent.
Another group teaches the church will
go through the seven years tribulation along with Israel before the
Second Coming; interpreting Daniel and Revelation more literally than
the above, and make no distinction between Israel and the church.
Some posttribulationists believe in a
premillennial rapture and believe the church will return (disregarding
the Marriage Supper of the Lamb) immediately to reign with Christ
for a thousand years. And he saith unto me, Write, Blessed are
they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb. And he
saith unto me, These are the true sayings of God. Revelation 19:9.
Despite all the above views we need not
be confused about the correct interpretation of Scripture. Our pretribulation
teaching is the strongest position because it takes a literal view
of the Holy Scripture. Only pretribulation rapturists hold to this
position. There are no signs to be fulfilled before the imminent return
of Christ for His church."
Lastly, the pretribulational view is
the only view that consistently separates God's program for the
church from His program for Israel. This position should lead
us to live Spirit controlled lives anticipating the imminent rapture
of the church.
I Corinthian 15: 50-58 Now this
I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of
God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption. Behold, I shew
you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,
In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the
trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and
we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption,
and this mortal must put on immortality. So when this corruptible
shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on
immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written,
Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is thy sting? O grave,
where is thy victory? The sting of death is sin; and the strength
of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory
through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved brethren, be
ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord,
forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.

Great White Throne Judgment
Optional Scripture Reading: Revelation
20: 1-15
The Bible speaks of several judgments
that will take place. The judgment of the nation of Israel, the judgment
upon the Gentiles, judgment upon fallen angels, judgment seat of Christ
for believers, and the Great White Throne judgment.
"The great white throne judgment
may rightly be called the 'final judgment'. It constitutes the termination
of God's resurrection and judgment program." (D. Pentecost).
We read of this last judgment in Revelation 20 11-15. And
I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face
the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for
them. And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the
books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book
of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written
in the books, according to their works. And the sea gave up the dead
which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were
in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.
And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second
death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was
cast into the lake of fire.
When will it take place? The Bible makes
it clear that this judgment will take place after the close of the
millennial 1,000 year reign of Christ. v. 12-13.
Where will it take place? "The Bible
makes it clear that this judgment will take place? Not in heaven,
nor on earth, but somewhere between the two." (Pentecost). v.
11.
Who will be involved in this judgment?
The passage points out it will be a judgment of the dead. "The
resurrection program of the saved was completed before the millennium,
begins. The only ones left unresurrected were the unsaved dead. These
must be the subjects of this judgment." (Pentecost). v. 12.
What is the basis for this judgment?
"It is not to determine whether those who stand before God are
saved or lost. All those that are to be saved have been saved and
have entered into their eternal state. This is rather a judgment on
the evil works of the unsaved. The sentence of the 'second death'
is passed upon them." (Pentecost). Eternal separation from God
is the destiny of the unsaved.
Thought: It is better to prepare for
the eternal day than just to prepare for a rainy day. (Fellowship
Paper, Union Grove,WI)

The Two Witnesses
Optional Scripture Reading: Revelation
11
At times God chooses to work with people
on this earth in very dramatic ways. We see one of those times in
the Exodus under the leadership of Moses. Through 10 great miraculous
plagues God delivered His people from cruel Egyptian bondage. During
the life and ministry of Jesus Christ, we find many great miracles
including even raising people from the dead. And if we take prophecy
at face value, and I do, we find that the end of the age will bring
a very dramatic course of events.
Among these events is the appearance
in Jerusalem of two unusual figures. We read in Revelation 11:3
And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall
prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed
in sackcloth. Like John the Baptist these men will prepare
the way of the Lord. Then we read where they will have power
to shut heaven, that it rain not in the days of their prophecy:
and have power over waters to turn them to blood, and to smite the
earth with all plagues, as often as they will. Rev 11:6.
The powers mentioned here bring to mind the ministry of both
Moses and Elijah. Elijah in particular was one who prayed
earnestly that it might not rain; and it rained not on the earth...James
5:17. Some believe that these two witnesses will be Moses and
Elijah. When Jesus was transfigured and revealed His glory, we read
that the fashion of his countenance was altered, and his raiment
was white and glistering. And, behold, there talked with him two
men, which were Moses and Elias: Luke 9: 29-30.
Others believe that they are Elijah and Enoch. Because of
the precedent of John the Baptist, I believe that they are men who
will come in the spirit and power of Moses and Elijah.

The Church of Thyatira
Optional Scripture Reading: Revelation
2: 18-29, (included below)
AD 606-1520 is
considered by many to be the Thyatira Period. It was during this
period of time that the Papacy introduced many of its heathen practices:
justification by works, worship with images, confessional, purgatory,
indulgences, penance, and more.
Though Thyatira was probably the smallest
of the seven cities, it received the longest letter. Christ starts
the letter by revealing Himself as the Son of God, who hath
his eyes like a unto a flame of fire, and his feet are like fine
brass; Revelation 2:18. Then He commends them for their
works, and charity, and service, and faith, and thy patience,
and thy works; and the last to be more than the first.
v.19. Like most of the other churches He then follows the commendation
with a condemnation. Notwithstanding I have a few things against
thee, because thou sufferest that woman Jezebel, which calleth herself
a prophetess, to teach and to seduce my servants to commit fornication,
and to eat things sacrificed unto idols. v. 20.
Christ was not pleased to see the church stand idle and lax as this
false teaching was going on. Again, Christ calls for repentance.
In verse 21 we see that Jezebel does not repent, but will
the Church?
When we become lax, idle and comfortable,
Satan will send in people like Jezebel and the Papacy to try and
get the church to stumble. Maybe we should ask ourselves if we have
allowed things to go on in our homes, churches and personal lives
that should not be there? Has Satan placed things in our lives that
cause us to stumble?
Revelation 2:
18-29 And
unto the angel of the church in Thyatira write; These things saith
the Son of God, who hath his eyes like unto a flame of fire, and
his feet are like fine brass;
I know thy works, and charity, and service, and faith, and thy patience,
and thy works; and the last to be more than the first. Notwithstanding
I have a few things against thee, because thou sufferest that woman
Jezebel, which calleth herself a prophetess, to teach and to seduce
my servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed
unto idols. And I gave her space to repent of her fornication; and
she repented not. Behold, I will cast her into a bed, and them that
commit adultery with her into great tribulation, except they repent
of their deeds. And I will kill her children with death; and all
the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and
hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your
works. But unto you I say, and unto the rest in Thyatira, as many
as have not this doctrine, and which have not known the depths of
Satan, as they speak; I will put upon you none other burden. But
that which ye have already hold fast till I come. And he that overcometh,
and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over
the nations: And he shall rule them with a rod of iron; as the vessels
of a potter shall they be broken to shivers: even as I received
of my Father. And I will give him the morning star. He that hath
an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.

Premillenialism
Some very foolish theologians equate
premillennialism with Russellism (Jehovah's Witnesses). Others blame
C.I. Scofield and discredit the Scofield Bible by saying we worship
the Scofield Bible. Both the above are not true! There are others
who say we have only one Scripture to base our premillennial position
on, and cite Revelation chapter 20. It's true Revelation 20 cites
the 1000 years six times, however if it were only one time that
would be enough.
We are premillennial because it is
a biblical and historical position. Philip Schaff, a noted church
historian wrote: The most striking point in eschatology (study
of the doctrine of last things) of the anti-Nicean age is the
prominent chiliasm (expecting the imminent return of Christ
and the setting up of His Kingdom), or millennarianism, that
is the belief of a visible reign of Christ in glory on earth with
the risen saints for a thousand years, before the general resurrection
and judgment. (History of the Christian Church, Vol. 2, p. 614).
Job looked forward to the Lord's return
when he said, For I know that my redeemer
liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth:
And though after my skin worms
destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God: Whom I shall
see for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and not another; though
my reins be consumed within me. Job 19: 25-27
Jesus taught it: Marvel not at this: for the
hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear
his voice, And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto
the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the
resurrection of damnation. John 5: 28-9. Notice this verse
speaks of the two resurrections.
Paul taught it: And have hope toward God,
which they themselves also allow, that there shall be a resurrection
of the dead, both of the just and unjust. Acts 24:15.
Daniel taught it: And many of them that sleep
in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life,
and some to shame and everlasting contempt. Daniel 12:2.
We could add many other references, but space will
not permit. The early church believed it, the Bible teaches it, that
settles it.

The New Earth
Optional Scripture Reading: 2
Peter 3: 1-13
We read in Genesis 1:1, In
the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. The
apostle Paul, speaking in Lystra said the people should turn to
the living God which made heaven, and earth, and the sea,
and all things that are therein. Acts 14:15. Peter
tells us in 2 Peter 3:10 that the present heavens shall
pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent
heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned
up.
But Scripture assures us that the same
God Who created the earth in the first place will create a new earth
wherein dwelleth righteousness. 2 Peter 3;13. The
ungodliness and wickedness that is prevalent now will not exist
on the new earth. Writing in Revelation 21: 5-6 John said:
And He that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all
things new. And He said, Write: for these words are true and faithful.
And He said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning
and the end.
"By a definite act of creation,
God calls into being a new heaven and a new earth and earth is to
be the scene of His theocratic display, so God will create the new
heavens and earth to be the scene of the eternal theocratic kingdom
of God. The creation of the new heavens and new earth is the final
preparatory act anticipating the eternal kingdom of God." (D.
Pentecost).
"Since Scripture reveals that
the church will be with Christ, it is concluded that the eternal
abode of the church will likewise be in the new earth, in that heavenly
city, the new Jerusalem, that has been especially prepared by God
for His saints." (Pentecost).

in the Bible unless you know what is in it? (The Lifeline)

Is Elijah Coming Again?
Optional Scripture Reading: Matthew
11:1-9
Elijah stands out among the prophets
as a man of faith and action, and a man who was strong in the Spirit.
The apostles knew well of Elijah as they too wanted to call down
fire from heaven. But their desire was born of the flesh and not
the spirit. The prophet Malachi speaks of the coming of Elijah.
Here we read where God says, Behold, I will send you Elijah
the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the
Lord; and he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children,
and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and
smite the earth with a curse. Malachi 4:5-6.
Also in Malachi 3:1 we read, Behold,
I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me:
and the Lord, whom ye seek, ... He shall come, saith the LORD of
hosts. Then Jesus said of John the Baptist...if ye will receive
it, this is Elias, which was for to come. Matthew 11:14.
The prophecies that tell of the coming
of Christ are somewhat confusing. They tell of a suffering servant
and also of a conquering king. This is because they speak of two
different comings. The first time Jesus came, he came as a lamb
to die. When He comes again, He will come as a conquering king.
If you would study the two witnesses
mentioned in the book of Revelation and what Jesus taught concerning
John, I believe that there will be another who comes like John the
Baptist in the spirit and power of Elijah, during the tribulation
period.

The Church of Sardis
Optional Scripture Reading: Revelation
3:1-6, (included below)
The Sardis period is said to between
1520-1750. As we study the church of Sardis, we will see that this
church is spiritually dead. Notice in all of the churches that we
have looked at prior to Sardis, Christ had something good to say
about them. This is the first church where there is no commendation.
He starts off this letter just like
all the others by identifying who He is, He that hath the
seven spirits of God, and the seven stars. Then He goes
on to say some pretty harsh words to the church in Sardis.
I know thy works, that thou hast a name that thou
livest, and art dead. These people were alive on the outside
but spiritually dead on the inside. It has been said that many churches
begin with a man, reach out with a mission, become a movement, and
eventually end up a monument. (Levy). The church of Sardis was moving
no where.
Is it not interesting that even in
this spiritually dead church there is still a remnant. Revelation
3:4 says Thou hast a few names even in Sardis which have
not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with me in white;
for they are worthy. There will always be a remnant in every
period of history.
Let us look deep within ourselves and
ask: Does the church of Sardis somehow characterize our lives? Do
we have a reputation of being alive on the outside, yet spiritually
starving ourselves on the inside?
Proverbs 29:18 Where there is
no vision, the people perish.
Revelation 3: 1-6. And unto the
angel of the church in Sardis write; These things saith he that
hath the seven Spirits of God, and the seven stars; I know thy works,
that thou hast a name that thou livest, and art dead. Be watchful,
and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die: for
I have not found thy works perfect before God. Remember therefore
how thou hast received and heard, and hold fast, and repent. If
therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief,
and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee. Thou hast
a few names even in Sardis which have not defiled their garments;
and they shall walk with me in white: for they are worthy. He that
overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will
not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess
his name before my Father, and before his angels. He that hath an
ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.

Postmillennialism
Optional Scripture Reading: Acts
8: 26-40
This view became popular with the teaching
of evolution during the industrial revolution of the 1800's. Everything
looked so rosy for mankind and the theologians optimistically looked
forward to a golden age. Mankind was making so many advances; he
would usher in the Kingdom of God with his material progress and
good works. However, because of two world wars and the degeneration
of society, those who were so gung-ho for man's future began to
rethink their position.
I quote from A.H. Strong, one of the
foremost proponents of this teaching. "The Scripture foretells
a period, called the language of prophecy 'a thousand years' when
Satan shall be restrained and the saints shall reign with Christ
on earth....this leads us to the conclusion that this millennial
blessedness and dominion is prior to the Second Advent."
Strong defines this, "As the period in the latter days of the
church militant, when, under the special influence of the Holy Spirit,
the spirit of the martyrs shall appear again, true religion will
be greatly quickened and revived. Church members will be come so
conscious of their strength in Christ that they shall, to an extent
unknown before, triumph over the power of veil both within and without."
(Systematic Theology. pp1010-11, 13).
Another advocate of this position,
was J. H. Snowden, (The Coming of the Lord, 1919) in which he said
"it is true that many of these prophecies...must be taken poetically
and not literally." He held that Christ comes many times in
history, in the Old Testament against Babylon and Syria, at the
conversion of Constantine, at the Civil War and the first World
War---all of these are illustrations of the coming of Christ. He
even cited the Battle Hymn of the Republic: "Mine eyes have
seen the glory of the coming of the Lord." The demise of postmillennialism
emptied its adherents into either premillennialism or amillennialism,
and led to the present conflict between these two schools of prophetic
interpretation and the conflict we face today.

The Book of Life
Optional Scripture Reading: Philippians
4: 1-9, (included below)
The term Book of Life is only
used six times in the New Testament, five times in Revelation and
once in Philippians. The Bible seems to indicate there are tow books
referred to in this way, one is The Book of Life, and the
other as The Lamb's book of Life. Here are the verses that
speak of these books. Paul refers to those
women which laboured with me in the gospel, with Clement also, and
with other my fellowlabourers, whose names are in the book of life.
Philippians 4:3
Writing to the church in Sardis, Jesus
said: He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white
raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life,
but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.
Revelation 3:5.
In a section dealing with the beast,
John wrote: And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship
him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb
slain from the foundation of the world. Revelation 13:8.
At the great white throne judgment
John said he saw a great white throne, and him that sat on
it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there
was found no place for them. And I saw the dead, small and great,
stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was
opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out
of those things which were written in the books, according to their
works. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death
and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were
judged every man according to their works. 14 And death and hell
were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever
was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake
of fire. Revelation 20:11-15.
Speaking of the new Jerusalem, John
wrote: And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing
that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh
a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb's book of life.
Revelation 21: 27.
Finally we read these solemn words:
And if any man shall take away from the words of the book
of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of
life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written
in this book. Revelation 22:19.
Optional reading:
Therefore, my brethren dearly
beloved and longed for, my joy and crown, so stand fast in the Lord,
my dearly beloved. I beseech
Euodias, and beseech Syntyche, that they be of the same mind in
the Lord. And I intreat thee also, true yokefellow, help those women
which laboured with me in the gospel, with Clement also, and with
other my fellowlabourers, whose names are in the book of life.
Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice. Let your moderation
be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand. Be careful for nothing;
but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving
let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God,
which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds
through Christ Jesus. Finally,
brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest,
whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever
things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there
be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard,
and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you.

The Crowns of Heaven
Optional Scripture Reading: 1
Corinthians 3: 11-15, (included below)
There are several crowns mentioned
in the Bible. There is a crown for those who die for the sake of
the gospel. In Revelation 2:10 we read Christ's promise,...Be
thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.
It is very fitting that people like this should be recognized and
rewarded. Paul at the very end of his life talked about how ...there
is laid up for me a crown of righteousness...2 Timothy
4:8.
I am not altogether sure that we have
a comprehensive list of rewards in the Bible, but all our service
for Christ will come under close scrutiny. Sadly, some will not
come to find any reward. Their work will be ...burned, ...but
he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire. 1 Corinthians
3:15. I always find this difficult to understand, especially
since so little is required to receive eternal reward. Jesus said,
...whosoever shall give...a cup of cold water...verily I say
unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward. Matthew 10:42.
We are not told what the reward is,
just that it would not be lost. The purpose for these crowns is
interesting. According to Revelation 4:10 those representative
of all saints...fall down before him ...and worship him that
liveth for ever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne...
In other words, these crowns are not for personal glory, but in
an act of worship, the saints give their crowns to Jesus as a token
of their gratitude for all that He has done for them. I can't think
of anything that would be more difficult than having nothing to
offer Christ at that moment.
Optional reading:
I Corinthians 3: 11-15. For other
foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.
Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious
stones, wood, hay, stubble; Every man's work shall be made manifest:
for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire;
and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is. If any
man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive
a reward. If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss:
but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.

The Church of Philadelphia
Optional Scripture Reading: Revelation
3: 7-13, (included below)
The Philadelphia Period is said to
have taken place from 1750- 1900. During this time the world saw
much evangelism. Missionaries went out all across the world to spread
the gospel.
The Church of Philadelphia is almost
the complete opposite of the previous church, Sardis. Sardis had
no commendation from Christ, only a condemnation. The church in
Philadelphia has a wonderful commendation but no condemnation. Christ
was very pleased with this church
In His letter Christ reveals Himself
in three ways;...He that is holy, he that is true, he that
hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and
shutteth and no man openeth. What a comfort to know
that if God opens a door for us, no one can shut it but Him, and
if He shuts a door, no one can open it but Him. In the Philadelphia
Period, the door was open for many to preach the gospel and the
power of God was clearly seen. So too was the door open for the
church in Philadelphia. The Bible says they had little strength,
which could mean that they were small in size. But, even though
this church may have been small and weak, they were strong in the
faith and that is what allowed them to be greatly used of God.
Christ was very pleased with this church.
In verse eleven He encourages them to ...hold that fast which
thou hast, that no man take thy crown. (Keep the faith!).
God specializes in using the weak and
humble thing, but often times we allow our own pride and talents
to get in His way.
I Corinthians 1:27 But
God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the
wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound
the things which are mighty.
Optional reading:
Revelation 3: 7-13.
Behold, I come quickly: hold
that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown. Him that
overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he
shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God,
and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which
cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him
my new name. He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith
unto the churches

Amillennialism

The above word is derived from "millennial"
and the "alpha privative" (Latin) which makes it negative.
It means "no millennium', no thousand year kingdom reign of
Christ upon the earth. "It is a teaching that the only visible
return of Christ to the earth which the church is to expect will
be for the judgment and will be followed by the final state. It
is amillennial because it rejects the doctrine that there will be
tow resurrections with an interval of a thousand years." (Oswald
T. Allis)
The bitterness of some amillennial writers is illustrated
by William E. Cox in his book Amillennialism Today, 1966. He calls
premillennialism, "Rabbinism...in modern garb: and addresses
those with whom he cannot agree with as "Mr. Pharisee."
He accuses a leading premillennial author of having "blind
spots", or else "he deliberately sets out poison for his
readers by using half-truths."
While we differ with their conclusions, we shall
try to enlighten you to the fallacies of amillennialism with the
following:
-
Israel must return to the promised
land before the millennium. And say unto them, Thus saith
the Lord GOD; Behold, I will take the children of Israel from
among the heathen, whither they be gone, and will gather them
on every side, and bring them into their own land: And I will
make them one nation in the land upon the mountains of Israel;
and one king shall be king to them all: and they shall be no more
two nations, neither shall they be divided into two kingdoms any
more at all. Ezekiel
37: 21-22.
- The kingdom, when established, shall be eternal. And
thine house and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee:
thy throne shall be established for ever. 2 Samuel 7:16.
- Great changes shall occur in the animal kingdom. The
wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down
with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together;
and a little child shall lead them.
And the cow and the bear shall feed; their young ones shall lie down
together: and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. And the sucking
child shall play on the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall
put his hand on the cockatrice' den. They
shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain: for the earth shall
be full of the knowledge of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea.
Isaiah 11: 6-9
We could add many more references, but the above have
not been fulfilled. therefore wer are not in the kingdom.

The New Heavens
Optional Scripture Reading: Revelation
21:1-8, (included below)
In Revelation 21: 1 John wrote,
And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven
and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. This
reminds us of Isaiah's prophecy, For, behold, I create new heavens
and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come
into mind. Isaiah 65:17 For as the new heavens and the new
earth, which I will make, shall remain before me, saith the LORD,
so shall your seed and your name remain. Isaiah 66:22. "Now
the two chapters from which these verses are quoted have to do with
the Millennium, but I take it that we have here faith's telescope
looking out, even in that past dispensation, to the unchanging and
unchangeable condition that shall abide forever." (Ironside).
"I have no doubt it is to these
promises that the apostle Peter refers in his second epistle, after
describing the destruction by fire of the heavens and the earth, that
now are, he says, Nevertheless we, according
to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth
righteousness. 2 Peter 3:13. This
then, is the glorious consummation to which the opening verses of
Revelation 21 introduce us." (Ironside).
Peter tells us that the present heavens
are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment
and perdition of ungodly men. 2 Peter 3:7. Jesus
Himself spoke of heaven passing away.. Matthew 24:35. He Who created
the heavens in the first place (Genesis 1) can certainly create new
ones without any problem, and we will someday enjoy them.
Thought: There is no conflict between
the old and the new; the conflict is between the false and the true.
(The Lifeline)
Optional reading:
Revelation 21:1-8.
And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the
first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no
more sea. And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down
from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle
of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be
his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.
And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall
be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there
be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. And he that
sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said
unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful. And he said
unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end.
I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water
of life freely. He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I
will be his God, and he shall be my son. But the fearful, and unbelieving,
and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers,
and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which
burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

New Jerusalem
Optional Scripture Reading: Revelation
21: 9-27, (included below)
The eternal state is a great mystery.
Paul wrote in I Corinthians 2:9...Eye hath not seen,
nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things
which God hath prepared for them that love him. Then we
also find when he was caught up into heaven, he finds no language
to describe what he sees.
And yet we find that the disciples
recognize Jesus as He is raised from the dead. He told them Behold
my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for
a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have. Luke
24:39. We find as Moses built the tabernacle that it was patterned
after one that existed in heaven. It was therefore necessary
that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified with
these; but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices
than these. For Christ is not entered into the holy places made
with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself,
now to appear in the presence of God for us: Hebrews
9: 23-4.
The New Jerusalem is a place like and
yet not like the Jerusalem we know now. Among other things we read
the foundations of the wall of the city were garnished with all
manner of precious stones. The first foundation was jasper; the
second, sapphire; the third, a chalcedony; the fourth, an emerald;
The fifth, sardonyx; the sixth, sardius; the seventh, chrysolyte;
the eighth, beryl; the ninth, a topaz; the tenth, a chrysoprasus;
the eleventh, a jacinth; the twelfth, an amethyst. And the twelve
gates were twelve pearls: every several gate was of one pearl: and
the street of the city was pure gold, as it were transparent glass.
And I saw no temple therein:
for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it. Revelation
21: 19-22 And there shall in no
wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh
abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the
Lamb's book of life. v.27. There
will be a complete separation from all that is evil.

The Church of Laodicea
Optional Scripture Reading: Revelation
3: 14-22
Many believe that we are in the Laodicean
Period now and have been since about 1900. The main characteristic
of the church in Laodicea is that it was neither hot nor cold but
lukewarm And this very same characteristic is what we see in many
churches all throughout America.
The beginning of the letter starts
off with Christ claiming to be the Amen, the Faithful and True Witness,
the Beginning of the Creation of God. Then Christ would usually
follow with a commendation-- but that is not the case with the church
in Laodicea. In fact, He had nothing good to report at all. In verse
sixteen He goes on to say So then because thou art lukewarm,
and neither cold nor hot, I will spue (vomit) thee
out of my mouth. It is interesting that God would rather
have us be hot or cold than somewhere in the middle. But for many
of us, somewhere in the middle is where we live every day of our
lives. This is why many believe we are in the Laodicean Age. People
do not want to be totally committed to Christ, yet they want just
enough of Christ to make them feel good. Little do people realize
that this half hearted Christian commitment is worse than someone
who wants nothing to do with Christ at all.
Though Laodicea may have been the leading
producers of eye salve, the church did not even realize how blinded
it truly was. AS people continue to hold on to the world and reach
for Christ, they will get nowhere. Have we let go of the world that
we may be totally committed to Christ?
Revelation 3:20. Behold, I stand
at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door,
I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.
Optional Reading:
Revelation 3: 14-22 And unto the angel of
the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen,
the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of
God; I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would
thou wert cold or hot. So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither
cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth. 1Because thou sayest,
I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and
knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and
blind, and naked: I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the
fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest
be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and
anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see. As many as
I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.
Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice,
and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him,
and he with me. To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with
me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my
Father in his throne. He that hath an ear, let him hear what the
Spirit saith unto the churches.

Spiritual Growth
Optional Scripture Reading: 2
Peter 1: 3-14
An indication that a person has been
spiritually born again is spiritual growth. Often times when a person
has just come to know Christ he is encouraged to study the book
of first John. This book shows us how to grow in fellowship with
God. In I John 2: 12 John said I write unto you, little
children, because your sins are forgiven you for his name's sake.
Just as we started our physical life as a baby we also start
our spiritual life as a baby in Christ. As a person grows in fellowship
he will begin to know his Heavenly Father. The second and third
categories that John addresses are found in the following verse.
I write unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from
the beginning. I write unto you, young men, because ye have overcome
the wicked one. v. 13. The fathers are those that
have grown in the fellowship with God over several years. They are
considered to be spiritual adults. The young men are those that
are fighting Satan daily and his worldly influences.
For those that have trusted Christ
let us not be satisfied in being a baby in Christ. Continue to grow
in fellowship with God. Remember the test of a born again Christian
is spiritual growth. Let us take some time to ask ourselves how
much have we grown since we first trusted Christ? Are we still babes
in Christ? Are we fathers, those that have truly come to know the
goodness of God? Are we the young men, those that continue to fight
off Satan and his wickedness? Praise the Lord for salvation but
pray to God you will not be stagnant.
Optional Reading:
2 Peter 1: 3-14. According as
his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto
life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called
us to glory and virtue: Whereby are given unto us exceeding great
and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the
divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world
through lust. And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your
faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; And to knowledge temperance;
and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; And to godliness
brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. For if these
things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither
be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off,
and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins. Wherefore
